April 27, 2012 – Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS), the country’s major player in the micro-insurance sector, sealed an industry ground-breaking venture with Federal Phoenix Assurance Company, Inc. (FPAC) through a MOA signing event held at the PJL Corporate Center in Makati City.

This partnership will make CTPL issuance fast, convenient and reliable—more particularly when claims arise. This move also augurs well with PJLI President and CEO Jean Henri D. Lhuillier’s vision of evolving Cebuana Lhuillier as “the No. 1 insurance pick-up center in the country”.

Many Filipinos go out of the country in search of greener pastures to better provide for their families. No matter how far they are, they make sure that their family is well provided for by sending money back home. Fast, convenient, and safe sending of money through remittance companies/agents is important to make sure that hard-earned money go to the right hands.
Here are some tips on secure sending and receiving of remittance:
1. Choose a money remittance company/agent that is known to be reliable and has genuine care for its clients.
2. If you are the sender, secure the money remittance transaction details. Do not throw the remittance transaction slip unless you are sure that the receiver has claimed the money. In case you lost your transaction slip before the receiver claims the remittance, immediately inform the remittance company where you sent your money and refund the money sent if possible. Refunding the money will prevent strangers who will find your transaction slip from claiming your remittance.
3. If you are the sender, make sure that you are sending the correct control number to your recipient.
4. If you are the receiver, immediately claim the remittance once you have the transaction control number.
5. If you are the receiver, make sure to choose the right remittance company/agent/payout center that practice good security measures. These payout centers usually request for government-issued IDs before paying out any transaction. Further, these institutions do not payout transactions unless the name of the receiver in their system matches the valid ID presented by the receiver when claiming their remittance.
Don’t be a victim of scams. Make sure you are transacting with the trusted money remittance companies and agents.

Founded in 1987 by the current Philippine envoy to Portugal, Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier is currently managed by its President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier.
Businessman and diplomat Philippe J. Lhuillier says he cannot explain why he feels happy most of the time.
Instrumental in building his father’s pawnshop business in Cebu into a dominant player in the country, he says with certainty that his happy disposition is one effective formula for success.
“When I wake up, I am already in a happy mood. My wife notices that, and she asked me once why I would jump around and make antics in the mornings,” Philippe tells SundayBiz.
His positive aura and innate affection for people perhaps are the reasons he was well loved by the Filipino community in Italy, where he served as Philippine ambassador from 1999 to 2010.
Recently, he was appointed by President Aquino to serve as Philippine ambassador to Portugal.
Award from Italy
Known for his leadership skills and warm nature, Philippe became the first Philippine ambassador to Italy to be given the prestigious award of “Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta Italiana” (Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity).
The Italian government gave him the award in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of goodwill between the Philippines and Italy.
The award was also in recognition of his efforts to help overseas Filipino workers based there.
During his 11-year post in Italy, Philippe opened the doors of the Philippine Embassy. The place became a venue for various activities that serve Filipinos in the foreign country—from computer seminars, to short courses in entrepreneurship, sports, and dialogues with OFWs.
“For our short courses, we would invite a guest speaker every week to teach Filipinos,” says Philippine. “Sometimes, when we had no speaker, I myself would teach them entrepreneurship,” he adds.
For Philippe, who handed over the leadership of Cebuana Lhuillier to his eldest son, Jean Henri, following his appointment to Italy, things that make him a fulfilled diplomat and a successful businessman are the same.
He carries along with him his positive outlook, his Christian values, and genuine concern for people whatever hat he is wearing.
Starting young
At only 8-years-old, the young Philippe started to learn independence and hard work, and already showed signs of his penchant for entrepreneurship.
At that age, he was sent by his Cebu-based parents to Manila to study. Every summer, he would go home to Cebu to learn from his father lessons about running a business. He would also help out in the day-to-day operation of the family business. His father, the late Henry Lhuillier, was a French consul to the Philippines who built pawnshops in Cebu in the 1930s.
“My father was strict in giving allowance, and so I know the value of hard work,” Philippe says. He says his father would give him money if he helped out in the pawnshop.
It was in grade school when Philippe’s entrepreneurial skills first manifested. Teachers in La Salle required students to bring rosaries every day. What Philippe would do is sell rosaries to his classmates who would forget to bring their rosaries. “I would sell a rosary, which I would get for 30 centavos, for 40 centavos,” he says. They would buy from me because they did not want to be reprimanded,” he says.
Seeing how his father valued hard work, Philippe says he has learned not only to work hard but also to love and be happy about working hard.
Golden egg
Philippe also says he has a golden egg that serves as his good luck charm. The golden egg, which symbolizes his positive outlook in life, was a gift from his father.
“I always have it with me,” he says, pointing to the golden egg displayed on his table.
On the family’s pawnshop business, Philippe expresses pride over his family’s pawnshop business (which eventually turned into a group of companies). He says it feels good to know that the family’s business is helping individuals, particularly by serving their short-term needs for cash.
“Pawnshops help people who are in need of short-term cash. Pawnshops contribute to the economy,” he says.
He says Cebuana Lhuiller, the flagship of a string of entities under the PJ Lhuiller Group of Companies, has worked to improve the image of pawnshops in the country. He says that while an old-school perception was that a pawnshop was “a place of last resort,” pawnshops in the country are now viewed more positively by customers.
He says in the case of Cebuana Lhuiller, it strives to give its customers the Filipino value of hospitality.
“In Cebuana Lhuillier, we tell our staff to say hello and to smile a lot to the customers. We want our customers to feel at home whenever they are in our pawnshops,” he says.
He says pawnshops in the Philippines, led by Cebuana Lhuiller, are very much different from those in other countries.
In China for instance, he says, a person who visits the pawnshop is required to drop his jewelry for pawning at a box at a high place. The client is not able to see the face of the attendant, he says.
“Here in the Philippines, we strive to give a much more pers
onal service—the Filipino way,” he says.
Christian values
Philippe, who went to La Salle from grade school to college, says he also credits the Christian values taught by the school in the molding of his character. The Christian-La Sallian education helped imbibe in him the values of compassion, discipline, and prayer, he says.
“I always carry a rosary in my pocket,” says Philippe. He never got rid of the habit since learning it from grade school.
Whenever things get tough, Philippe says he manages to keep on smiling. Besides hard work, Philippe counts on his faith, a positive outlook, and his golden egg to accomplish his objectives.
“Like what my father used to tell me, as long as I have the golden egg, I will be fine,” he says with a big smile.
Philippe, who aims to significantly build economic and social ties between the Philippines and Portugal as ambassador, says he takes with him his Christian values, his optimism, and his golden egg as he focuses on his new endeavor as ambassador to Portugal.

Manila, Philippines – Ambassador-designate to Portugal Philippe Lhuillier (right) calls on Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario to discuss the possibility of expanding tourism as well as trade, technology and cultural ties with the European country. Lhuillier, former ambassador to Italy, believes the primary objective for his new post is to foster diplomacy to promote the goals of national and economic security as well as the welfare of overseas Filipinos. Portugal’s economic development model has been slowly changing from one based on public consumption to one focused on exports, private investment and development of the high-tech sector. Business services have since overtaken more traditional industries such as textiles, clothing, footwear, cork (of which Portugal is the world’s leading producer), wood products, and beverages.

Mr. Jean Henri Lhuillier, Mr. Miko Jimenez, Mr. Leo Escano, Mr. Jonathan Batangan, officers and employees of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies, and of Cebuanna Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, guests, my happy friends, good evening!
On Feb. 17, 2010, I was so blessed with an unexpected gift from God. Without my knowing, my sisters-in-law Gigi and Tinette had nominated me in the Nationwide Search for the Happiest Pinoy by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions; out of 218 nominees from all over the Philippines and seven finalists, I was proclaimed the winner. I felt so honored to receive this recognition because we, Filipinos, are essentially a happy people. I thought that I was just like all of you and my fun-loving nature was just an ordinary thing. Gigi disagreed and told me that my happy attitude is remarkable. That surprised me — at napaisip tuloy ako – what was so extraordinary about my attitude toward happiness? Nevertheless, Gigi and Tinette — thank you for your belief in me that I could be the Happiest Pinoy!
In my reflections, I realized that what people considered remarkable about me was that I chose to be happy despite all the trials, pains and struggles that plagued me.
After I won, people from many walks of life approached me or got in touch with me to say they were inspired to hear my life story.
Truly, I feel touched and humbled by their appreciation! How I wish I could tell them a defining dramatic moment in my childhood when I made this conscious decision to always be happy no matter what… but honestly I could think of none! I just remember that even as a little boy, I accepted my circumstances, I endured the difficulties and I overcame the challenges — always with a smile on my face, with joy in my heart, and with lots of laughter along the way.
And so I asked myself the next question, what made me like this? I am stumped and have no definite answer. I am not a psychologist so I cannot give you any scientific explanation. I have no psychological theories to expound on; I have no powerpoint presentation with “picha pie” charts. All I have is only myself, my simple life story — perhaps we can all learn lessons from some significant events in my life.

“Happiness is a decision that you and I make every day.
When life gets down, hope that it will be better tomorrow.”
– Winston Maxino
I was fortunate to be invited for the Happiness Boot Camp
courtesy of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc.
I believe I’m a jolly person and learned to appreciate even simple things in life.
At an early age I learned to be independent. I was 13 years old when my parents
decided to separate. I told myself the sufferings are temporary and life will be better.
When I got my first salary I bought material things that made me comfortable,
but true happiness only came when I learned to appreciate life itself.
The Happiest Pinoy Boot Camp
Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS) began the nationwide
search for the Happiest Pinoy 2012, recognizing Filipinos who remain
optimistic and resilient amid life’s challenges.
We arrived at Nurture Spa, Tagaytay City, the venue of the 2012 Happiness Boot Camp.
A warm welcome and hot tea greeted us upon arrival. I shared a room with fellow blogger Ruth,
and we had a wonderful overnight stay.
In the evening, we met Happiest Pinoy 2010 winner Winston Maxino,
whose inspiring story and humor left a lasting impression.
Winston was chosen from 218 nominees. Despite multiple health challenges,
his optimism and faith never wavered.
Truly, he is deserving of the title The Happiest Pinoy.
The Happiest Pinoy 2012 Criteria:
Constant cheerfulness and optimism
Ability to rise above challenges
Positive impact on others
“Happiness is a decision that you and I make every day.”
– Winston Maxino
The boot camp taught me that happiness is meant to be shared.
We already have everything we need to be happy.
What I Learned:
The present moment is a gift
Happiness is a mindset
Happiness is fewer desires
Choose positive thoughts
Value silence

June 5, 2012 – Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS), headed by CLIS General Manager Jonathan D. Batangan, put together a Balik Tanaw event at Cebuana Lhuillier building in Makati City for Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP) claimants.
The activity allows for CLIS to get in touch with ACP claimants and see how they have fared after receiving their grants.
During the gathering, clients recounted the fire incidents that robbed them of their homes and possessions and how their insurance settlements helped in rebuilding their lives. They were impressed by the company’s two-day quick-claim process and were equally grateful for the smooth transactions they experienced under the care of Cebuana Lhuillier branch personnel.
CLIS team with CLIS Operations Manager Rhoneil Pascual and Claims Supervisor Ramon Gonzalez, gave the attendees premium Happiest Pinoy items after the session.

I watch as he pause for a moment midway his speech. I was standing close on the side taking his photo and saw his face, suddenly overcame with shadow, I noticed he swallowed deep, trying to keep steady in front of a crowd of 30 plus people, trying to hide what he was feeling at that moment. For what looked like he was having a hard time reading his speech, little did people know he was grimacing in pain. In just a few seconds he got his composure back, smiling, while he deliver his speech as if nothing happened.
Such is the man named, Winston Maxino, a family man at his late forties, who is literally in constant pain after being diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). But despite his condition, he chose to show his sunny disposition and inspire others to be happy.
Winston narrated how as an asthmatic child, he was regularly an outcast but his persistence on trying to belong despite his condition still paid off. His scout master saw his other skills like excelling in knots or other non-physical aspects. Being diagnosed as an AS didn’t stop him from being happy, aside from wallowing in self-pity, he chose to accept his condition. But his trials didn’t end there, he received another blow in his life when his daughter was diagnosed with down syndrome. But his daughter’s frequent declaration of loving her life and the future made him realize that he has a lot to be grateful for no matter his life condition is. His body may be broken but that wouldn’t stop him from being happy as it is the choice he made. He enjoys making children laugh with his balloon knotting talents and tricks. He is also involved in helping the down syndrome society of the Philippines.
Winston’s resiliency was an inspiration to her family and friends. It didn’t go unnoticed as her sister nominated him for the Happiest Pinoy. An advocacy spearheaded by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, as they hope to promote positive values. Most of the pageants focus on the physical aspects, the most beautiful, the most sexy and more handsome. Why not look for the happiest?” says Jonathan Batangan, General Manager of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Agency.
After screening more than 200 nominees and interviewing the top 7 finalist, Winston’s demeanor and personality stood out to the top. He was awarded the Happiest Pinoy in 2010. From what I heard, he donated majority of his P200,000 winnings and continue to share his life-story to inspire more people.
Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions is again in search for another “Happiest Pinoy” this 2012. The prizes are bigger, P250,000 for the Happiest Pinoy Awardee and the rest of the top 10 finalist would receive P25,000 each. Those who nominate will also be given a token if their nominee wins.

IN AN effort to augment its already pervasive range of service channels, Sun Cellular has opened a prepaid reloading service through Security Bank Online.
“We tap on the sophistication of online banking to create a convenient and reliable channel for our customers to reload their sun prepaid accounts anytime. Now, Security Bank Online clients can get 24/7 access to Sun load using just their gadgets and an internet connection,” said Michele Curran, vice president for marketing of Sun Business, Sun Cellular’s corporate solutions unit.
This new service channel accommodates reloading transactions for Sun prepaid, fixed load and easy line accounts. Subscribers can log on to their Security Bank Online account and choose the option for prepaid reloading. This will let them transfer credits from their account to their mobile number in the form of prepaid load.
Recently, Sun Cellular has also partnered with Banco de Oro Unibank to incorporate Sun Cellular prepaid reloading service into the existing point of sales of their different branches. This gives Sun subscribers an alternative means for reloading besides going to their neighborhood retailers and sari-sari stores.
Curran also said further to partnerships with banks and financial institutions for postpaid bills payment, Sun Cellular has also embarked on using these systems to better serve prepaid service patrons. Sun has then opened prepaid reloading via outlets of 7-Eleven, Cebuana Lhuillier, Netopia, Global Pinoy Remittance & Services and LoadCentral.
“Through synergies and partnerships like this, we cap off the customer experience by giving them a stronger network support and a far-reaching array of service channels. Beyond 24/7 communications, Sun Cellular is set to stand for convenience and reliability of service, as well,” Curran adds.
Sun Cellular is a member of the Philippine Long Distance Co. Group.

Remaining resilient and positive in trying times differentiates Pinoys from the rest of the world. Our ability to smile despite the price increase in commodities, tuition fees, and the “extra challenge” to save always see us through. But what does happiness really mean for the everyday Pinoy? A happiness campaign from Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions reveal it’s the following:
What does happiness mean to you?
1. Health
2. Financial security
3. Work
These are among many others but many will agree with number 2. For sometime, talking about money and happiness in the same light are taboo. There’s a saying “money can’t buy happiness” but I disagree. Financial security gives us a good night sleep, making our mornings and disposition happy. When you worry about money, how can you be happy?
Money is not the root of all evil, lack of money is!
In fact, I believe that “lack of money is the root of all evil” and not money in general. Now that we’ve reached the second half of the year, many of us are subconsciously evaluating our financial development. We’re looking backward to see how many steps we’ve taken to reach our financial goals for 2012 – and look forward to how many steps away we are.
This is a good time to remember the parable of the poor little rich man. He accumulated wheat all his life and for himself alone. He was so frugal even with himself, nor does he share his blessings to his servants. When he reached his goals, accumulating wheat enough to feed thousands, he went to rest and sleep – and never woke up again.
During the happiness bootcamp I attended, Jonathan Batangan (General Manager of CLIS) told us how selflessness is a characteristic of the happiest people in the world. In our journey to happiness, it is counterproductive to think of ourselves alone. Imagine how you can have a positive impact in the lives of others.
It’s no surprise how the happiest and richest people in our midst are those who know how to share their wealth, “for it is in giving that we are able to receive”. Money lets us practice generosity to help our family, friends, and most especially – people who we don’t even know.
In their happiness campaign, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions wishes to promote not just being resilient and choosing to be positive but also to promote awareness on the plight of our indigenous Aeta brothers & sisters.
Today can make you rich
Here’s a secret to getting happy and rich- focus on the now, use your “present” because it’s a gift you can use to build your future. Choose to be productive now, don’t look back at the past or be discouraged by an uncertain future. That’s just you procrastinating. Choose to be a happy money maker no matter how hard it is to save today. Believe you can achieve your financial goals and eliminate your worries so you can focus on today.
During the conference, Jonathan explained how powerful our thoughts are and how they DO determine our future. Borrowing the words of buddha “the mind is everything, what you think, you become”. Many of us know this but most of the time, we choose to criticize, complain, and magnify our aches & pains rather than our blessings. Truly, being positive is a hard task when our minds are programmed to tune into the harsh realities of life.
Let me take this opportunity to introduce God into your life, whose goal is to make us happy. In fact he said, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you”. You guessed it, it’s my favorite verse and the promise I keep close to my heart when my bank account balance is simply depressing.
Let’s celebrate happiness!
So what is the happiest campaign all about? CLIS wants to celebrate and promote Filipino resilience in the midst of trying times. They are now searching for the next Happiest Pinoy who will join the ranks of Winston Maxino – the Happiest P
inoy 2009. Winston’s story beats all the stories I’ve watched from the 700 Club, learn what Angkylosing Spondilitis is and watch Winston’s story here.

Happiness means a lot of things to me. But more often than not, happiness for me is when I get to do the things that I love.
Like traveling to many different places around the country and abroad.
And of course, shopping and buying “pasalubong” whenever I travel.
I also love cooking and baking.
As well as eating of course! I think everyone is happy when they eat!
But happiness to me is more than just doing the things that you love, it’s also spending time with your loved ones – specially if your family is as crazy as mine.
Why am I talking about happiness today?
It’s because I’m now in Tagaytay, spending time at the Happiness Boot Camp with other bloggers. We were invited by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS) who is now searching for the HAPPIEST PINOY of 2012!

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS) organized a Happiness Boot Camp at Nurture Spa, Tagaytay. This event is part of their campaign for the call of nomination for the Next Happiest Pinoy 2012. You can read more about it at www.happiest-pinoy.com. The grand prize is ₱250,000 for the happiest Pinoy, while runner-ups receive ₱25,000 each (tax-free).
The boot camp was organized for bloggers and social media influencers, following previous sessions for press and media. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the Happiest Pinoy campaign and reconnect with fellow bloggers and friends.
Event Highlights
At the boot camp, we experienced a variety of activities:
Cooking & Food: Learned how to prepare a no-cook pasta, make energy drinks using indigenous vegetables, and try healthy veggie recipes.
Wellness: Enjoyed relaxing spa treatments at Nurture Spa and explored the Digital Meridian System to check our health.
Interactive Games: Shared our happiest childhood memories, pole dancing fun, and other team activities.
Bonding: Spent quality time with blogger friends over lunch at Antonio’s Breakfast in Tagaytay.
My Personal Experience
I was asked many times, “What is happiness to you?” I remember joining a photo contest and winning! For me, happiness is celebrating life with my wife and our baby boy, Ashton. Creating life together as husband and wife is a true product of happiness.
During a game, we shared childhood memories. I recalled seeing a robotic dinosaur at Star City—it was the happiest moment of my young years because I’ve always loved dinosaurs!
Food & Fun Moments
We had a fantastic lunch bonding with our blogger friends at Antonio’s Breakfast. The food was amazing, from grilled chicken to barbeque and salads. Everyone enjoyed the meals, and the energy was truly uplifting.
Campaign Highlights
The Happiness Boot Camp marks the beginning of the Happiest Pinoy campaign. Wilson Maxino, the 2010 Happiest Pinoy, shared his experiences, while the organizers explained the campaign’s purpose: inspiring acceptance, positivity, and happiness across the Philippines.
Ten finalists will be selected, with one walking the red carpet as the Happiest Pinoy and taking home ₱250,000. Runner-ups receive ₱25,000 each. Nominate your happiest Pinoy now:
Achieving happiness has been an endless goal for most people around the world. But for the resilient and ever-cheerful Pinoys, being happy is not really a monumental task. Hence, when Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) Chairman Philippe Lhuillier thought of looking for the Happiest Pinoy two years ago, 218 Filipinos heeded his call.
Two years after, it’s time to Search for the next Happiest Pinoy who will also get to bring home a Php 250,000 cash prize, tax-free. Hopefully, it could make him/her happier as well.
The search seeks to recognize the country’s most optimistic and passionate Filipinos who overcame difficulties in life and exhibited resilience amid life’s challenges while maintaining that genuine smile.
As of this writing, I am at the Nurture Spa in Tagaytay on day 2 of the first-ever “Happiness Bootcamp” in the Philippines, and even possibly in the world, courtesy of Cebuana Lhuillier. We came in yesterday afternoon for the media briefing followed by a relaxing massage before dinner and the main program.
This will be followed by a learning workshop later in the morning and we’re heading back to Manila.
Meeting the Happiest Pinoy of 2010
In the evening program last night, we were introduced to the Happiest Pinoy 2010 top winner Winston Maxino.
–>
He bested 217 nominees and six finalists including a wheelchair-bound individual and an amputee. Winston looks like just any ordinary individual, same as you and me. But his positive disposition in life is deeply rooted from his childhood where he learned to accept his asthmatic and sickly condition early on.
Furthermore, he was able to sustain his optimism even when he became the father to a child with Down-Syndrome and eventually became president of the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines a few years ago.
And just when he thought the worst was over, he was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, osteoporosis, and uveitis.
But instead of treating them as punishments, he took them as something from which he could learn more about life.
What Makes the Happiest Pinoy, Unhappy?
After his inspiring speech for us, I personally asked him on the side:
“What makes, or can make, the Happiest Pinoy of 2010, unhappy?”
“I become unhappy when I see others unhappy,” he answered back. He also mentioned that he was once asked the same question by a 6-yr old child as a school guest and he answered that seeing them sad and uninspired even after hearing his story would certainly make him unhappy at least for sometime.
How about you? Can you also view life’s challenges in the same way as our Happiest Pinoy role model?
If you know someone who can also best exemplify being the Happiest Pinoy for 2012, please do consider nominating them until July 31, 2012 and honor their virtue as the Happiest Pinoy 2012.

When in Manila, have you considered yourself a relatively happy person?
When I’ve heard about the Happiest Pinoy nationwide search of Cebuana Lhuilier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS), a week-long debate went on between a friend and I about it. What are the grounds for declaring someone as happy, more so happiest? Happiness is relative. What makes one person happy does not necessarily mean that it can make everyone else filled with glee. A capitalist’s triumph is the proletariat’s burden. How can you even measure something that’s not even quantifiable, to begin with?
I’d have to admit I cannot exactly say that I’m generally a happy person. I’ve had my fair share of a very long (recurring?) quarter life crisis and sometimes existentialism hits me really hard. There are times when I just want to get by, believing that I should reach that point where everything is ok. I know that somewhere, sometime, something good is bound to happen.
Earlier I’ve had the privilege to meet Winston Maxino, the winner of the 2010 Search for the Happiest Pinoy. He was all smiles when he entered the room, and I was thinking, ok so he is the happiest man, but how? When I heard his story, I understood why he deserved the title.
Winston Maxino has been diagnosed with asthma, osteoperosis, uveitis, and Ankylosing Spondylitis. Angkylosi-what? It’s a very rare degenerative disease (only 3 have been recoreded in the Philippines) which affects the spinal column, making the person’s vertebrae join together. Despite this, his doctor attests that he is a delight to talk with. He also has a daughter with Down’s Syndrome, and he is very proud of her!
I’m pretty sure he has faced a lot of hurdles in life, hearing from him that he even got to a point where he questioned the deities for his “misfortune”. And still, there he was, standing in front of us, all smiles. The Happiest Pinoy.
How on earth??
He chose to be happy.
My face actually lit up when I heard that 5-word sentence. He chose to be happy.
It’s easy for people to be all emo and pity themselves for all the world has thrown at them and the “tragic fate” they have received. It’s easy for some to rant about things and find fault in other people, but how difficult does it have to be for us to appreciate?
Happiness is a decision you can make. It’s a matter of perspective. You will be happy if you choose to be.
When in Manila, don’t deprive yourself of a life worth living. Choose a lighter life. Choose to be happy 🙂
Now, do you know someone who could be the next Happiest Pinoy who could share with us how they stay happy amid adversaries?

I was born in a negative environment. All I’ve been hearing throughout my life is how imperfect I was and how inadequate I was. No matter what I do, everything or anything just wasn’t ever enough. A few years after college, when I started living alone, I realized that I need to put some positivity in my life or else, I’d be doomed. I tried so hard thinking positively in spite of living most of my life in a toxic way.
Positivity is slowly entering my system as my goals are being achieved one by one. It was a very slow process but I’m on my way there. I had to shut off negativity when it started to crawl in again. Thinking positively has been a very difficult goal for me to achieve. In fact, I felt that I was already faking happiness because I know deep inside, I was still lonely. This has changed when I accepted the Lord. I’m still on that positivity & happiness journey but now, I know that I’m not alone.
Now, why am I sharing this? Today, I took a leave from work to attend the Happiness Boot Camp arranged by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions. I didn’t wanna miss the chance to learn how to be happier. We are all a work in progress after all!
The Happiness Boot Camp was organized to also launch the 2012 Search for the Happiest Pinoy. Me, on the other hand, enjoyed the Happiness Boot Camp. It was held at the Nurture Spa in which I got the impression that I’d be getting pampered and relaxed especially since I’d be getting my much-needed massage
Well, it wasn’t only the massage and the relaxing ambiance that made my stay enjoyable but the valuable lessons I got from all the talks from the speakers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are HAPPY, please like this. And if you want to be happy, like it as well.
Amidst tough times, trying moments and unforeseen events, Filipinos are expected to exude happiness more than anything else. As if joy and happiness is embedded in the inner being of Filipinos that even at the lowest point of circumstances, we can still manage to smile and give heavier weight on happy things.
This is what the campaign of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions’“Happiest Pinoy 2012″ is all about. CLIS is looking for Filipinos from anywhere in the Philippines that exemplify the trait of being genuinely happy.
The Happiest Pinoy is open to Filipinos from 10 years old and above who possess three main things:
A constantly cheerful face and optimistic outlook
Proven ability to rise above life’s challenges
Positive impact in the lives of others.
Each will be qualified according through background checking and verification via a screening committee. A panel of judges then interviews Top 20 semi-finalists to get the Final 10 Happiest Pinoy contenders.
The chosen Happiest Pinoy can add another reason to be happy since he or she can win Php 250,000 tax-free while the other nine finalist can enjoy Php 25,000 each.
“This is another way of measuring growth, in terms of happiness of people. And Filipinos is among the top in the world – 13th to be exact lately,” said CLSI General Manager Jonathan Batangan.
CLSI initiated this campaign last 2010 and was cited by various local and international award-giving bodies for Public relations campaign excellence.
Like its previous winner, Winston Maxino, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions is expecting to find that exceptional happy Filipino.
Maxino is a dad of three girls whose life revolved in an up-and-down mere soap-opera tale. He was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease. He also has a child who has down syndrome. And yet amidst all of this, he chose to be happy.
Now, will you be the next Happiest Pinoy? Or do you know anyone that fits the criteria?
If so, you can just visit Happiest Pinoy website and download the official form and send it thru email or snail mail.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THE TRUE GEM
When I first arrived at the Philippine Embassy in Rome, I came only with my two feet and few pieces of luggage. I did not even have a personal secretary nor my own people to assist me.
My family even found it difficult to believe that I was willing to serve in government. But I thought that since I had been good in business, I might as well be good as an Ambassador. I came to Rome with just myself and my desire to serve the Filipinos living there.
As a businessman, I never run away from a challenge and I view my posting as Philippine Ambassador to Italy as one. I also pose the same challenge to the embassy staff. I often remind them to think that the people who come to the office could be them or their friends or relatives. They have sacrificed a lot by leaving their own country to work alone in a faraway country. We should try to assist them in every possible way.
I have set some changes since I first arrived in Rome in 1998. The Embassy is now open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – without any noon break – and processing time of consular documents has consequently been reduced. A closed circuit television system installed all over the embassy helps me know if additional staff is needed in areas where there is a deluge of clients. Outreach programs to other provinces in Italy are also held regularly to meet the needs of Filipinos in those places.
A have also institutionalized regular consultation meetings with the Filipino communities. My weekends and holidays are preoccupied by visiting them in their communities. It is not surprising that I get to eat three lunches and four meriendas during Sundays. I attend bowling competition or basketball game to award trophies. My pressing concern always is how to be of greater help to the Filipinos.
My assistant would often say that I will not carry on this way since I do “micromanage.” However, I guess this is really my management style. I once told the embassy staff that I may not have an MBA, but I am an MBWA holder — Management By Walking Around.
Contrary to accepted views, OFWs are not oblivious to the Philippines’ cause. They remain interested in government affairs and try to participate in political exercises. The comments and suggestions I have made at the first Overseas Absentee Voting process held in 2004 — particularly when we resolved, as Special Board of Election Committee, that loyalty to the party ends when one assumes a government position — has been used as basis for the drafting of the law.
Surprisingly, that election process got a huge participation, not only from the Filipino communities but also from the religious sector. For several days, we did not go home — much to the anxiety of Mrs. Lhuillier — and painstakingly counted the ballots for the presidential and senatorial candidates. We amused ourselves by singing and joking around, but it was hard work.
I have also transformed the embassy and made it much bigger to accommodate the large number of clients. There is a library and a technology center now where Filipinos, who are waiting for their documents to be processed, can go and read about country or email their family, relatives and friends back home.
I am also trying to find a way for our countrymen to improve themselves and enhance their skills. I believe they should not be content with being hired help. They could be nurses, caregivers, telephone repairmen, utility men, and the like. I often think of Mircea Eliade — a Romanian historian of religion, fiction writer, philosopher and university professor — who believed that a person leaves home in order to return successful. I want the Filipino workers to be successful when they go back to the Philippines and enjoy the fruit of their hard work in Il Bel Paese.
My ultimate dream, however, is to have a Philippine Center in Italy. I want to put up a “home” for our community where they can cease to become “migrants” for the time being. The center will also showcase to the Italians our rich heritage and diverse culture. I thought I could accomplish this within a year of assuming office but it has proven to be a bit difficult. Hopefully, with the help of my friend Gianni Alemanno, who has been elected Mayor of Rome, in finding suitable location for the center, this dream will soon be a reality.
In my long sojourn in Italy and with the numerous personalities whom I have met, I believe that indeed, home is where the heart is.
And my heart is with the Filipinos in Italy. I have grown to love, care and be concerned with them — and I wish I can do more for them.
Despite all the diamonds and precious stones that I have encountered in my business, I have found the gem of all gems in Italy — the Filipino people.

Founded in 1987 by the current Philippine envoy to Portugal, Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier is currently managed by its President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier.
When Filipinos hear the name Lhuillier, the first thing that comes to their minds is the well-known pawnshop or I should say, one of the most popular and oldest pawnshops that had been helping us with our financial needs since the ‘30s. But for Filipinos living in Italy, Lhullier is more than just the name of the popular pawnshop; Lhuillier reminds them of a person who served them as an ambassador for more than a decade—years that went beyond the borders of politics, touching lives by building a good and healthy relationship with Filipinos overseas.
Graduating from his management course at the De La Salle University in 1968, Philippe Jones Lhuillier started as a businessman looking after the empire that his father, Henry Lhuillier had founded. Agencia Cebuana, the pawnshop that was soon to be the Cebuana Lhuillier in the late ‘80s, was passed on to his care.
Today, after decades of successful business, Cebuana has grown to over 1,400 branches nationwide. The preferred cash solutions provider of Filipinos was again passed on to Philippe’s sons, Jean Henri and Andre, when Philippe was appointed as Philippine Ambassador to Italy in 1999.
Reminiscing the past years, Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier remembers that he takes pleasure in dealing with customers whom he believes must be treated like a family. “I myself was at the counter. I was the appraiser, and I enjoyed talking to them and helping them in the best way I could,” he says. His key objective was to give assistance. “I believe this is a way of helping people who will need money in a short period of time,” he added.
While he had been an entrepreneur for the longest time before he decided to join the government, he asserts that being in politics and being in business is not at all different, contrary to what others say. For him, dealing with Filipinos in Italy was just like dealing with customers in his pawnshop. “I love talking to people and sharing ideas with them,” he said.
In retrospect, it must be his love of country and the same burning passion to serve, help and be involved in people’s lives in a good way which made his memories of almost 11 years of service truly worthwhile. “The years went by so fast but I enjoyed every minute of it,” the former ambassador said with a smile as if remembering his childhood days.
Although more than a year had already passed since his term ended, he still keeps in his heart the memories of his experience at the embassy with the Filipinos.
“They would come to my room whenever they wished to see me following a first come, first served order,” he said. “But they didn’t come to see me just for problems. Some of them dropped by my office to talk about positive developments as well.” In fact, he didn’t even have security guards with him in his office. He said he believes that the Filipino people should be trusted all the time.
Another thing he remembered was going down to where the customers were at 2:45pm every day to help one Filipino a day. “When I go home, I would be proud to tell my wife what I’ve done. That was my goal every day.”
“I want them to feel happy every time they go to the embassy.”
It was his answer to my question about his greatest achievement as an ambassador that seemed to evoke his biggest smile. “My greatest achievement was loving them, caring for them and listening to them because I believe that these are the things they needed,” he said.
According to Philippe Lhuillier, he would have 25 to 40 visitors coming to his room every day. “I would listen to them, hold their hand, and even take pictures with them . . . their problems weren’t as big as we think.”
More than financial help, Ambassador Philippe Lhuillier observed that what our beloved and much missed Outstanding Filipinos Worldwide (OFW) need more is more training.
“If they will learn, they can have business over there [abroad] and after some period, they can continue doing the business here [Philippines].” He calls on TESDA to send teachers abroad because OFWs often leave immediately after training. “The best time to train them is while they are there,” he explains.
True enough, he himself is a living testimony to the importance of training. He considers his early years in service important as he represented the Philippines at FAO, IFAD, and WFP.
“I decided to be a student to the deputy general of FAO to learn really what FAO was all about. And at the same time, I was working with the embassy… I was there to learn,” he said.
As part of this advocacy, the embassy opened free computer classes, producing 3,000 graduates.
In December 2000, he founded the Philippe J. Lhuillier Foundation, Inc., a charitable organization as the CSR arm of his company. “The focus of our foundation is how to help give and return to people,” he said.
The Foundation now has 220 scholars, with 80 more expected this year for its 10th anniversary celebration.
LOVING HIS COUNTRY FROM AFAR
Although not pure Filipino—having a father from Paris and a mother from Cebu—he showed deep affection for both cultures.
“With the long time I stayed in Italy, I observed that Filipinos love their country so much… When they die, they want their bodies to be buried at home.”
He believes tourism and national love are key to progress. He pushed for a Philippine tourism CD to be distributed abroad but said he was “quite unsuccessful.”
His father’s words guide him still: “As long as you don’t lose the golden egg that I gave you, you will survive.” – by Jamie Marie Elona

MANILA, Philippines – That smile could win you P250,000.
Teachers, school officials and other personnel should start the school year with a smile to encourage a happy atmosphere in the classroom, the Department of Education (DepEd) has said.
The DepEd has partnered with Cebuana Lhuiller Insurance Solutions to encourage school participation in the happiness initiative called Wear A Smile Campaign, an effort to find the “Happiest Pinoy” and encourage the rest of the nation to be happy every day.
“To start the school year in high spirits, all school personnel are encouraged to be in a positive disposition and to wear a smile when they report for the opening of classes on June 4 and the days that follow,” said Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
In a memorandum, Luistro enjoined DepEd regional directors, division chiefs and the heads of public and private elementary schools to “ensure the success of the campaign.”
The DepEd will conduct the search for the Happiest Pinoy at the school level on June 4-8, at the division level on June 11-15 and regional level on June 18-22.
The contest is open not only to school personnel but to all Filipinos of legal age and to groups or organizations registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Nominations may be submitted until July 15 through the campaign’s website, www.happiest-pinoy.com.
The winner will be selected according to the following criteria: A constantly cheerful face and optimistic outlook, proven ability to rise above life’s challenges and a positive impact on the lives of others.
A panel of nine judges, among them, Luistro, CNN 2009 Hero Efren Peñaflorida, former Sen. Leticia Ramos Shahani and former Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri, will pick the winner from 10 finalists in September.
The Happiest Pinoy will win a trophy and P250,000 while finalists will each receive P25,000 and trophies. Tarra Quismundo

PJ Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI) conducted the 2nd leg of its Nationwide Ang Galing Mo Bata! (AGMB) Medical Mission in Cebu and Bais Cities on March 16 and March 24.
In partnership with Cebuana Lhuillier and United Laboratories, Inc. (UNILAB), the Foundation team accounted an estimate of almost 100 families from the beneficiary day care centers in Brgy. San Nicolas Proper, Cebu City and Brgy Talungon, Bais City, respectively. With the efforts of PJLFI, families were provided with free general check up, consultation and prescriptions from doctors, complimentary supplements, and medicines.
Aside from the medical mission in Bais City held on March 24, a simple birthday celebration was held for PJLI President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuiller where children from the day care center and their families were given a treat.
Both events were a success with the help of the Area Officers and staff of CLP Business Regions 4A and 4B, school teachers, and barangay health workers who helped out in the different activities.
PJLFI will complete the last round of medical mission by the end of May.

MANILA, Philippines – Start the school year with “a positive disposition” and “wear a smile.”
This is what Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro wants public school teachers and administrators to do when school classes begin on June 4.
As an added inducement to make smiling a habit in school, the DepEd says it is a partner of the “Search for the Happier Pinoy” contest launched by the Cebuana Lhuiller Insurance Solutions (CLIS).
Luistro issued DepEd Memorandum No. 85 series of 2012 to Regional Directors, Schools Division/City Superintendents, and Heads of Public and Private Elementary and Secondary Schools which announced the “Wear a Smile Campaign” and “Search for the Happiest Pinoy” contest.
“To start the school year in high spirits, all school personnel are encouraged to be in a positive disposition and to wear a smile when they report for the opening of classes on June 4 and on the days that follow,” Luistro said in the memo.
DepEd is supporting the “Search for the Happiest Pinoy.”
“The campaign aims to put schools in a cheerful atmosphere and at the same time influence the pupils and students to look forward to good days in their classes,” Luistro said.
The Search is open to all Filipinos of legal age and of good moral character, who reside in any part of the country, and groups of organizations registered by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
“There will be two slots for the top 10 finalists allotted for the happiest teacher and student,” Luistro said.
Cash prize and trophies await the “Happiest Pinoy” winner and runners up to be presented on September 25.
The DepEd chief said school heads will have primary responsibility for ensuring the success of the “Wear a Smile” campaign.
“Likewise, the regional directors, schools division/city superintendents and supervisors shall carry out the campaign in their respective offices and monitor its conduct and schools in their respective areas,” he said.
Earlier, the “Smile” directive gained mixed reactions from teachers groups claiming that this is “non-sense” given all the perennial problems such as shortages in classrooms, teachers, books and sanitary facilities that public school students and te

Held at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Manila, the May Birthday Project is a gift-giving event where Kcat’s family, friends, and supporters contribute and distribute food, toys, and other hospital necessities to the Children’s and Neurosurgery wards of PGH.
This project is Kcat’s way of celebrating life and sharing her blessings despite suffering from Neurofibromatosis Type II, a rare genetic disorder which causes hear loss, eye and spinal lesions and disequilibrium.
Patients from the Pediatrics, Surgery, and Otorhinolaryngology departments were very thankful not only by the numerous gifts but also by the number of visitors who supported the project. Kids and adults alike were delighted with a surprise visit from clowns provided for by the Team Foundation.

MANILA, Philippines – Cebuana Lhuillier hopes to shine this time with a
new backcourt crew as the Gems face the Boracay Rum Waves in the PBA
D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City today.
Lester Alvarez, Raymond Maconocido and Bacon Austria will now man
the backcourt of the Gems, hoping to complement well with Kevin
Alas and Simon Atkins as they seek a first-ever D-League crown.
“I think we have added quality pieces,” said Cebuana Lhuillier
coach Luigi Trillo, who also acquired forwards Janus Lozada and
Jeck Apinan to firm up their frontcourt.
But while acquiring new players, Trillo also lost a pair of
talented guards in Jai Reyes and Terrence Romeo.
Reyes moved over to the Bangkok Cobras in the Asian Basketball
League, while Romeo was among the five players barred from playing
in the league by their school team Far Eastern U until after the
UAAP season is over.
Whether the new recruits have already adjusted to Trillo’s system
will be known today when the Gems and the Waves clash at 4 p.m.

Trillo said it is always a challenge playing against Boracay Rum
because the Waves are tough competitors who always play hard to
win.
“(Boracay Rum) coach Lawrence Chongson has proven time and again
that his teams can win. He has added depth to his rotation. We
know their forte is zone and we respect that,” Trillo said.
For the Waves to succeed, Chongson said, they must be able to
match the Gems’ energy and defensive hustle.
“Going up against a more superior team like Cebuana Lhuillier, my
boys have to be resilient for 40 minutes. We can’t afford to
blink even for a second or the game might slip from our hands.”

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Appointments (CA) confirmed Wednesday the appointments of Philippe Jones Lhuillier as the Philippine Ambassador to Portugal and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr. as permanent representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The bicameral body also confirmed eight chiefs of mission class 1, eight chiefs of mission class II, and one foreign service officer (FSO), class II.
The CA foreign affairs committee, presided over by Senate President Pro Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada as one of the seven vice chairmen, sought the confirmation of Lhuillier, Conejos, and 16 other DFA officials after a committee hearing.
Lhuillier served as the Philippine ambassador to Italy for 11 years. Because of his exemplary performance, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III moved that the committee recommend Lhuillier’s confirmation. Both appointees are Cebuanos.
The committee, however, decided to defer again recommending the confirmation of the appointment of businessman Domingo L. Lee as the Philippine ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China (PROC) for lack of time.
Lee had difficulty answering the probing questions of Sen. Sergio R.Osmeña III and other CA members on PROC affairs, particularly the controversial West Philippine Sea (formerly South China Sea).
Several members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the PROC are claiming part or the whole of the South China Sea, which is presumed to have undetermined oil reserves.
Lee’s appointment was deferred by the CA foreign affairs committee, led by Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, last November.

The search aims to give recognition to the country’s most optimistic and passionate Filipinos who overcame difficulties and exhibited resilience amid life’s challenges, without losing their cheerful attitude.

“We hope to again get the endorsement from the DOT as it runs analogous to the DOT theme of ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines,’” Batangan bared.
Pinoys are naturally happy people and full of hope. This is proven when the Philippines currently ranks 13th place in the list of Happiest Countries globally by the NationMaster.Com,” according to Batangan.
“No amount of Typhoon Ondoy or Sendong and even the recent strong quake can destroy the inherent values that Filipinos generally possess,” Batangan added.
Ten happiest pinoys will be chosen but only one will emerge as the top winner and cart away with P250,000 in cash prize plus trophy while the other nine runners-up will receive P25,000 each plus a trophy.
“Who knows, the next Happiest Pinoy might be a government employee or a market. Vendor,” Batangan said.
Criteria for judging are: a) a constantly cheerful face and optimistic outlook b) proven ability to rise above life’s challenges and c) positive impact in the lives of others.
Nominations are accepted until May 30, 2012 while forms can be downloaded at www.happiest-pinoy.com.

Valentine’s Day is a natural time to share love and it becomes more significant when shared with those who feel unloved and deserted.
On February 14, the PJ Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI) organized an outreach program dubbed as “Ikaw LOLO at LOLA, ang Ka-Valentine ko” for the resident elderly of the Golden Acres Home for the Aged in Quezon City.
Together with PJLFI’s Metro Manila scholars, a total of 175 elders were served with special gifts, soft biscuits as raffle prizes and merienda. During the program, some of the elderly delightfully performed special numbers. Volunteer scholars and PJLFI staff also joined them in performing a song and dance presentation, which filled the event with cheer. In addition, several basic goods for daily use of the elders were turned over to the institution.
Outreach to Golden Acres Home for the Aged, which is a haven for neglected, abandoned, and homeless elders, is yearly conducted by the Foundation.

High-flying Vic Manuel of Cebuana Lhuillier leapt over the competition to bag Best Player of the Conference honors in the PBA Developmental League Aspirants’ Cup.
The 6’4” forward, also the current UCAA Most Valuable Player, possesses tremendous athleticism and agility uncommon for athletes his size. The former PSBA Jaguar averaged 15.9 points and 8.3 rebounds in the current D-League tournament. Manuel hopes these numbers are enough to catch the fancy of pro scouts as he bared his intentions of joining the Philippine Basketball Association draft later this year.
“Desidido na akong mag-pro pagtapos nito,” said Manuel, referring to his contractual obligations with Cebuana. “Sana may magbigay ng chance sa pros.”
The 24 year old first rose from obscurity two years ago when he stole the spotlight from older, more experienced players to capture the PBL MVP plum as a player of Pharex B-Complex. Vic is the final recipient of this award before the league folded. He also saw action in the PBL-Liga TOP and Liga Pilipinas while starring for the Philippine School of Business Administration in the NCRAA and UCAA.
Despite his experience in various tournaments, the Nueva Ecija native credits his stint in the PBA Developmental League, particularly with Cebuana Lhuillier, as the period in his career where he received the best exposure and training to prepare for fulfilling his dream to play in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Before he makes the big leap however, Manuel is determined to make his final conference with the Gems one to remember. The top performer of the Aspirants’ Cup, disappointed by Cebuana Lhuillier’s failure to advance to the championship this time around, said he will move heaven and earth to make it happen once the D-League opens shop again in March.
“Malaki talaga ang expectations ng lahat na mapachampion ang team. Next conference gagawin kong lahat para masuklian ang tiwala ni coach at ang suporta ng management. Dagdag nalang siguro yung magkaroon ako ulit ng award, pero gagawin kong makakaya ko,” Vic declared.
Although his team was unable to compete for the Aspirants’ Cup title, Vic Manuel’s hard work and determination received a fitting tribute and Cebuana’s Gem shone the brightest in this tournament. Congratulations to the PBA Developmental League’s Best Player of the Conference!
