Reaffirming its dedication to being a reliable microinsurance partner, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CLIS) continues to manifest its commitment of “may malasakit” by providing assistance to typhoon victims, even outside its insurance coverage.
Cebuana Lhuillier officers organized an Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP) claims cash aid payout at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Brgy. Trento, Agusan del Sur. The event benefited Cebuana Lhuillier customers who availed of ACP and whose houses were either washed out or damaged by Typhoon Pablo on December 4. For every Certificate of Cover (COC) availed by a customer, a corresponding cash amount of Php 500 was provided. Customers could claim up to a maximum of five COCs, or Php 2,500 per household. A total of Php 157,000 was distributed to 137 households.
The event was graced by Trento Mayor John Mark Billanes and Brgy. Poblacion Councilor Tessie Antonio and was supported by CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan, Regional Manager Eduardo Flores, and other officers of Cebuana Lhuillier.

12 Years of being a Home to the Homeless
In 2011, typhoon Sendong, the deadliest storm to hit the Philippines in 14 years, brought most of its destructive wind and rain in Northern Mindanao, particularly in Iligan City. Two years after the devastation, storm victims from the far-flung areas of Iligan City still cry for help.
In answer to this call, P.J. Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (PJLFI), the social responsibility arm of Cebuana Lhuillier, donated Php 204,000.00 to the distressed families in Sitios Panoroganan and Kalilangan in Iligan City which will be used to build 12 new homes. This act significantly represents the Foundation’s 12 years of providing true and incomparable service to the Filipinos.
PJLFI Chairman and Ambassador in the Philippines to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier, as represented by Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri D. Lhuillier and PJLFI Executive Trustee Atty. Cesar R. Vidal, turned over the check to Mr. Arturo B. Diago, Corporate Services Executive Vice President at Directories Philippines Corporation, on behalf of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Iligan City. The parish oversees the construction of the houses and a multi-purpose gym in the affected barangays.

Portugal Program Can Benefit Filipinos
MANILA, Philippines — Many Filipinos stand to benefit from a program launched by Portugal to allow foreign nationals to obtain residence permits and own property and businesses.
Dubbed the Golden Residence Permit (GRP) program, it aims to help immigrants to legally own property as a residence or for business.
Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier said the GRP program will help Filipinos legalize their stay and open more possibilities for their growth in Portugal.
Lhuillier said a Portuguese residence permit entitles holders to travel to any of the 26 European states in the Schengen area.
The Schengen Area comprises the territories of twenty-six European countries that have implemented the Schengen Agreement, signed in the town of Schengen, Luxembourg in 1985.
The Schengen Area operates as a single international travel and immigration area with no border controls for people travelling between Schengen countries and only external border controls for those travelling in and out of the area.
Five years of continuous eligibility in the program can lead to the acquisition of a permanent residence permit, while six years can help the holder acquire a Portuguese citizenship. The GRP program also allows the application for family reunification.

Philippine Ambassador Meets with AICEP Executive
Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier poses with Mr. Pedro Pessoa e Costa, Executive Administrator of AICEP during his visit to the agency´s headquarters in Lisbon last 6 February 2013
13 February 2013 – Philippine Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic Philippe J. Lhuillier paid a courtesy call on Mr. Pedro Pessoa e Costa, Executive Administrator of the Agencia Para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal (AICEP), Portugal´s Trade and Investment Agency in its headquarters in Lisbon on 6 February 2013.
In their meeting, Mr. Pessoa explained to the Ambassador that AICEP is integrated within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which facilitates its wide presence in 74 countries either within the embassies or as independent offices. The agency is manned by a workforce of more than 200 professionals conducting market research and identification of business opportunities for Portuguese companies.
Ambassador Lhuillier pointed to the improved business climate in the Philippines with investor confidence steadily rising as proven by the country´s improved credit ratings since the beginning of the Aquino administration with the latest result just one notch below investment grade. With a population exceeding 95 million, the country´s large consumer base presents an attractive come-on for potential investors.
Mr. Pessoa acknowledged the growing importance of the East in the global state of economic affairs and his country´s desire to find alternative markets for its products and services. The Ambassador encouraged Portuguese companies to take advantage of the Philippine’s liberalized investment and incentive policies. He requested AICEP´s assistance in relaying the Embassy´s invitation for Portuguese businessmen and entrepreneurs to attend the annual Manila FAME.
In order to increase the level of trade between Portugal and the Philippines, the two officials agreed to conduct more business matching activities including the possibility of exchange visits of business delegations within the year.
Created in 2007, AICEP is focused on encouraging foreign companies to invest in Portugal and promote the export activities of Portuguese companies including the enhancement of their presence overseas. Aside from promoting a competitive business environment, AICEP aims to serve as a one-stop-shop agency for prospective investors and buyers of Portuguese services and products.

Ambassador Lhuillier supports Portugal’s Golden Residence Permit Program
Keeping in mind his vision and commitment to be an effective channel between the Philippines and Portugal, Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier supports the launch of the Golden Residence Permit program (GRP) of the Portuguese government. Major changes to the legal rules on the entry and stay of foreign nationals have been adapted in this program, allowing them to obtain a Portuguese residence permit provided that they pursue certain investments individually or through a company.
This new development in the immigration policy is considered beneficial for Filipinos by the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon. Having a Portuguese residence permit entitles holders to travel to any of the 26 European states in the Schengen area and more importantly, 5 years of continuous eligibility in the program creates an opportunity to acquire a permanent residence permit and Portuguese citizenship after an additional one year. In addition, GRP holders may also apply for family reunification.
To be eligible for the GRP program, the non-EU national must be involved in investment activities in Portugal for a minimum period of 5 years. This would include capital transfers with a value equal to or above 1 million Euros, creation of at least 30 job positions or acquisition of real estate with a value equal to or above 500,000 Euros.
Submission of applications may be filed at any Portuguese Embassy or Consulate to be forwarded to the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service (SEF). Interested foreign nationals may also apply online at http://ari.sef.pt.
Through the Golden Residence Permit program, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier is optimistic that this is a great advantage for Filipinos to legalize their permanence and has opened up possibilities for further growth in the country of Portugal.

Nine months after being appointed as Philippine Ambassador to Portugal, Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier presented his Letter of Credence to President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal on January 14.
Following a Portuguese protocol motorcade and military salute for the ceremonies, Ambassador Lhuillier expressed the deep appreciation of the Philippine government, most especially President Benigno S. Aquino III, and the Filipino people for the harmonious and valuable relationship between the Philippines and Portugal. Being the channel to Portugal, Ambassador Lhuillier shared his vision for more active and productive collaborations between the two nations.
President Anibal Cavaco Salva also believes in the same vision and optimism of Ambassador Lhuillier. He recognizes that Asia, especially the Philippines, has great contributions to Portugal’s foreign and economic policies. He is confident that through the new ambassador, the continued close ties between the two countries would lead to positive results especially in the areas of trade, tourism, and enrichment of cultures.
Ambassador Lhuillier was the Philippine Ambassador to Italy from 1999 to 2010. Having been appointed to be the country’s envoy to Portugal, he promised to exert the same level of commitment and dedication in doing the responsibilities set forth by President Aquino III.
21 January 2013 – Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier cited the long historical, cultural and religious ties shared by the Philippines and Portugal when he presented his credentials to President Anibal Cavaco Silva as Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Portuguese Republic at impressive ceremonies on January 14.
Ambassador Lhuillier and party were fetched in the morning of January 14 by a Portuguese Protocol motorcade for the ceremonies. He was accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Josefina Estrada and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva Jr.
Following an age-old tradition, a mounted horse Honor Guard was bestowed on Ambassador Lhuillier at the Praça do Império in front of the historic Jerónimos Church and Monastery.
After receiving a military salute, the convoy carrying Ambassador Lhuillier and Embassy officials was escorted by the Mounted Guard of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) on the way to the Palácio de Belém, the official residence of the President of Portugal.
Upon arrival at the Palace courtyard, Ambassador Lhuillier was rendered another military salute where the Philippine and Portuguese national anthems were played.
At the precise moment, President Anibal Cavaco Silva formally received the Philippine Ambassador in the elegantly adorned Ambassadors Room of the Palace.
After presenting his Letter of Credence, the Ambassador was given a private audience with the President where he conveyed the warm greetings of President Benigno S. Aquino III and the deep appreciation of the Philippine Government and Filipino people for the close ties and the vibrant partnership existing between the Philippines and Portugal.
Ambassador Lhuillier expressed his desire for more active and productive engagements at all levels and areas that would bring greater collaboration and connectivity between the two countries.
President Cavaco Silva noted the importance of Asia in Portugal’s foreign and economic policy and emphasized the importance of the Philippines to Portugal. He acknowledged the history of friendship between the two countries and the contribution of overseas Filipinos to his own country and to the Philippine economy through their US$20 billion annual remittances.
He expressed optimism that with the new Ambassador, the close ties between Portugal and the Philippines would reach greater heights to benefit both countries especially in the areas of trade and tourism. He also hoped that more people-to-people contacts would lead to further exchanges and the enrichment of both cultures.
Aside from the Philippine Ambassador, the resident Ambassadors from Sweden, Bulgaria and China also presented their credentials on the same day.
President Aquino nominated Ambassador Lhuillier as the country’s envoy to Portugal in February 2012, and the Commission on Appointments confirmed his nomination on 14 March 2012. He previously served as the Philippine Ambassador to Italy from 1999 to 2010.
Ambassador Lhuillier vows to display the same level of commitment and dedication in accomplishing the tasks given to him by President Benigno S. Aquino III.
Ambassador Lhuillier is married to Edna Diago who hails from Dumaguete and they are blessed with two sons and five daughters.

POLIO-STRICKEN Rommel Arellano is this year’s “Happiest Pinoy,” besting nine other finalists and over 13,000 nominees nationwide. He took home the title plus P250,000, tax-free. Despite this, and overcoming discrimination, Rommel has held various jobs – insurance agent, part-time instructor, disc jockey, emcee, singer, musical director, resource speaker, call-center agent, and school guidance counsellor. He is also the current president of the Organization of Persons with Disability in his community. “I am overwhelmed with this unique recognition. By receiving this award, I hope to encourage more Filipinos to stay positive and remain optimistic despite life’s problems. I may not be able to walk, but getting up is never an issue. I got a free ticket from the organizers of the amazing Pistahang Cebuana! It was such an honor to witness the performances of the best OPM artists.
Cebuana Lhuillier is getting bigger each year. It is growing, together with Sarah Geronimo. It does not only regard itself as a company but also as a community of people willing to help each other. This pawnshop is under the famous P.J. Lhuillier group of companies. There are many new products and services to look forward from Cebuana. Indeed, it is not an ordinary pawnshop. It offers so much more. To express their gratitude to the public, they bring Sarah G and guests here in Davao.
The Popsters, Sarah Geronimo’s fans, from GenSan, Davao and other places in Mindanao also attended the event to support their number one idol.
On the same night, Cebuana Lhuillier also arranged some games for the 24K members and their ever loyal customers. Special items and cash prizes were given away. Cebuana’s success can be attributed to the fact that they do not only operate for profits but also to serve the people.
Before the major concert, Cebuana Lhuillier invited selected people for the Press Conference. In this presscon, Cebuana expressed their plans in the coming years. They are looking for better ways to serve the public. They also informed everyone that Sarah Geronimo just renewed her contract with the company. This means that the Pop Star will still be the one to promote Cebuana Lhuillier.
MANILA, Philippines — For someone who suffered from polio and now moves around in a wheelchair, Rommel Arellano remains positive and wears a smile on his face every day. “The power to overcome obstacles, hardships or trials is simply to face them with a happy heart. And from a happy heart we draw strength and resilience. If we face the world with a smile, the world will smile back to us,” the 35-year-old says. Even to this day, Arellano experiences discrimination every day to the point he is already used to it. But he uses these experiences to be his inspiration in life, the fuel that keeps him going through the difficult challenges life throws at him. Arellano’s optimism and positive outlook in life gives him an advantage over others. These same traits are the reason why he was chosen as this year’s Happiest Pinoy, a project of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, which aims to promote happiness and optimism among Filipinos by recognizing ordinary citizens, who despite their challenging lives, still remain positive in life. PROVING EVERYONE WRONG Arellano, from Limay in Bataan, was afflicted with polio when he was one year old and he has not been able to use his legs since then. Instead, he uses his hands and arms to “walk,” moving around the house by crawling. He started wearing slippers on his hands at four years old so he could go outside and explore the world around him. But he would discover immediately that that world was not such a nice place. Other kids would tease him because of his disability. They would call him names and even physically hurt him just because he was different. Others would say that he would not amount to anything when he grows up. “Other kids used to bully me and call me names or even associate any crawling animals with me. I was 10 years old and my playmates made me think that I was totally different from them. Naglalaro kami tinutukso nila ako, they were calling me names, tapos sinisipa-sipa nila ako. Ginagawa nila talaga akong outcast sa community namin. That hurt me a lot,” he recalls. He would always run to his room and cry. At this point he blamed God and ask, of all people in the world, why him? Later, he realized that it was not his fault and would stop the teasing to get the best of him. And soon enough, he understood that the taunting were just words that should not put him down, especially with the strong support of his family and friends. “I realized that I should take everything as a challenge. I would show them na kahit ganito ako, although different ako sa pisikal na aspeto, may kakayanan din ako. The first person who believed and saw my potential was my mother. She disregards what other people were saying about me,” he says. Arellano studied hard and finished elementary and high school. It was only in college where he finally started using a wheelchair to help him move, although the lack of access for the physically handicapped in the school still forced him to still resort to crawling. He eventually finished a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Bataan Peninsula State University. HELPING OTHER PWDs Looking for a job was far more difficult from what he expected. Even in looking for a job, Arellano’s disability prevailed over his talent. “I was called for a job interview but when I entered the room, the manager was surprised to see me because I was crawling! I reached for his hand and gave him the courtesy hand shake, I sat down while he browsed my resume. After a few minutes, he looked at me and sarcastically asked, ‘Nagda-drive ka ba ng motorsiklo?’. I was shocked for I am not expecting a person like him would insult me. I don’t know if I should even speak up and defend myself, or should I react. But I choose to be silent. I stood up and reached for his hand and said, ‘Thank you for your time sir.’ and left the room in tears. But that experience challenged me to continue with life,” Arellano shares. He eventually got a guidance counselling job at Limay Polytechnic College. At present, he works as a government employee at the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Limay. Arellano is also a speaker and resource person for values formation, team building, and stress management, among others. He is also an adviser of a PWD organization in his town. “I usually give talks to students and employees and non-government organization upholding the rights and welfare of PWDs. Our organization’s responsibility is to promote the welfare of PWDs by proposing and implementing programs such as livelihood and other economic and self enhancing program that will develop their social skills and boost their confidence,” Arellano explains. ACCEPTANCE EQUALS HAPPINESS He says that acceptance and contentment are the keys to happiness, something he always tells others, especially PWDs like him. “By accepting myself as I am, believing that I am a special creation, I believe that we can overcome everything. Kapag iniisip nating kaya natin, kakayanin natin. Be content with what you have and accept who you are, your limitations and capabilities. Kung hindi mo tanggap ‘yung sarili mo, nandun ka lang. Let’s try to break the wall and go beyond our limits. May mararating at mararating, may pag-asa na laging natatanaw sa atin sa kabila ng pader na nakaharang sa gitna natin,” he says. His only dream for the PWD community is for them to be given equal opportunity, be it in school or work. “PWDs should not look into their situations but look within themselves. Look at the possibilities na meron kang marating. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, maybe my legs are not functioning but I still have my hands. They say I cannot go places because of my legs and feet, but I have my tsinelas on my hands,” he ends. Source: Manila Bulletin

April 27, 2012 – Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS), the country’s major player in the micro-insurance sector, sealed an industry ground-breaking venture with Federal Phoenix Assurance Company, Inc. (FPAC) through a MOA signing event held at the PJL Corporate Center in Makati City.
Through this partnership, FPAC’s Compulsary Third Party Liability (CTPL) Insurance policies can be readily obtained by the country’s 4 million car owners through the more than 1,500 Cebuana Lhuillier branches nationwide. The CTPL is an insurance cover required in registering vehicles at the Land Transportation Office. In the words of FPAC President Ramon Dimacali, “this undertaking to decentralize CTPL is the first of its kind in the Philippines and will certainly shock the insurance industry and benefit the public”. This partnership will make CTPL issuance fast, convenient and reliable—more particularly when claims arise. This move also augurs well with PJLI President and CEO Jean Henri D. Lhuillier’s vision of evolving Cebuana Lhuillier as “the No. 1 insurance pick-up center in the country”.
Established in 1958, Federal Phoenix is a member of the Zuellig Group of Companies and is the country’s No. 1 motorcar insurer for years.

Many Filipinos go out of the country in search of greener pastures to better provide for their families. No matter how far they are, they make sure that their family is well provided for by sending money back home. Fast, convenient, and safe sending of money through remittance companies/agents is important to make sure that hard-earned money go to the right hands.
Here are some tips on secure sending and receiving of remittance:
1. Choose a money remittance company/agent that is known to be reliable and has genuine care for its clients.
2. If you are the sender, secure the money remittance transaction details. Do not throw the remittance transaction slip unless you are sure that the receiver has claimed the money. In case you lost your transaction slip before the receiver claims the remittance, immediately inform the remittance company where you sent your money and refund the money sent if possible. Refunding the money will prevent strangers who will find your transaction slip from claiming your remittance.
3. If you are the sender, make sure that you are sending the correct control number to your recipient.
4. If you are the receiver, immediately claim the remittance once you have the transaction control number.
5. If you are the receiver, make sure to choose the right remittance company/agent/payout center that practice good security measures. These payout centers usually request for government-issued IDs before paying out any transaction. Further, these institutions do not payout transactions unless the name of the receiver in their system matches the valid ID presented by the receiver when claiming their remittance.
Don’t be a victim of scams. Make sure you are transacting with the trusted money remittance companies and agents.
IF you want to let the world know about a friend, a mentor, or a family member who you feel is the happiest person in the Philippines, then there’s still time to tell the world his or her story.

Mr. Jean Henri Lhuillier, Mr. Miko Jimenez, Mr. Leo Escano, Mr. Jonathan Batangan, officers and employees of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies, and of Cebuanna Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, guests, my happy friends, good evening!
On Feb. 17, 2010, I was so blessed with an unexpected gift from God. Without my knowing, my sisters-in-law Gigi and Tinette had nominated me in the Nationwide Search for the Happiest Pinoy by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions; out of 218 nominees from all over the Philippines and seven finalists, I was proclaimed the winner. I felt so honored to receive this recognition because we, Filipinos, are essentially a happy people. I thought that I was just like all of you and my fun-loving nature was just an ordinary thing. Gigi disagreed and told me that my happy attitude is remarkable. That surprised me — at napaisip tuloy ako – what was so extraordinary about my attitude toward happiness? Nevertheless, Gigi and Tinette — thank you for your belief in me that I could be the Happiest Pinoy!
In my reflections, I realized that what people considered remarkable about me was that I chose to be happy despite all the trials, pains and struggles that plagued me.
After I won, people from many walks of life approached me or got in touch with me to say they were inspired to hear my life story.
Truly, I feel touched and humbled by their appreciation! How I wish I could tell them a defining dramatic moment in my childhood when I made this conscious decision to always be happy no matter what… but honestly I could think of none! I just remember that even as a little boy, I accepted my circumstances, I endured the difficulties and I overcame the challenges — always with a smile on my face, with joy in my heart, and with lots of laughter along the way.
And so I asked myself the next question, what made me like this? I am stumped and have no definite answer. I am not a psychologist so I cannot give you any scientific explanation. I have no psychological theories to expound on; I have no powerpoint presentation with “picha pie” charts. All I have is only myself, my simple life story — perhaps we can all learn lessons from some significant events in my life.

IN AN effort to augment its already pervasive range of service channels, Sun Cellular has opened a prepaid reloading service through Security Bank Online.
“We tap on the sophistication of online banking to create a convenient and reliable channel for our customers to reload their sun prepaid accounts anytime. Now, Security Bank Online clients can get 24/7 access to Sun load using just their gadgets and an internet connection,” said Michele Curran, vice president for marketing of Sun Business, Sun Cellular’s corporate solutions unit.
This new service channel accommodates reloading transactions for Sun prepaid, fixed load and easy line accounts. Subscribers can log on to their Security Bank Online account and choose the option for prepaid reloading. This will let them transfer credits from their account to their mobile number in the form of prepaid load.
Recently, Sun Cellular has also partnered with Banco de Oro Unibank to incorporate Sun Cellular prepaid reloading service into the existing point of sales of their different branches. This gives Sun subscribers an alternative means for reloading besides going to their neighborhood retailers and sari-sari stores.
Curran also said further to partnerships with banks and financial institutions for postpaid bills payment, Sun Cellular has also embarked on using these systems to better serve prepaid service patrons. Sun has then opened prepaid reloading via outlets of 7-Eleven, Cebuana Lhuillier, Netopia, Global Pinoy Remittance & Services and LoadCentral.
“Through synergies and partnerships like this, we cap off the customer experience by giving them a stronger network support and a far-reaching array of service channels. Beyond 24/7 communications, Sun Cellular is set to stand for convenience and reliability of service, as well,” Curran adds.
Sun Cellular is a member of the Philippine Long Distance Co. Group.

Ambassador Lhuillier explores tourism opportunities with President of Turismo de Portugal
PJ Lhuillier, Inc. (PJLI) Chairman and Philippine Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic Philippe J. Lhuillier explored tourism opportunities with Federico Costa, President of Turismo de Portugal in Lisbon, Portugal during a courtesy call on January 24.
Turismo de Portugal is the National Tourism Authority of Portugal and is known to be the main tourism arm of the Portuguese Government responsible for the promotion, enhancement and sustainability of tourism activities.
Costa shared to the Ambassador the unique tourism system of Portugal which includes establishing tourism schools and training centers. He also conveyed his admiration of the Philippines’ tourism campaign slogan It’s more fun in the Philippines but admitted that there is much for the Portuguese to learn about the Philippines.
Ambassador Lhuillier discussed the potential of the Philippines as gateway for tourism promotion in the Southeast Asian region. Though he noted that the Philippines still has plenty of room for improvement, he believes that the country can project a better image of its culture and various tourism destinations through feature articles and advertisements.
Both Acosta and the Ambassador acknowledged the huge contribution of tourism in the economy of both countries. Costa expressed his gratitude for the Ambassador’s visit, noting that not all Ambassadors have done the same.
Since travelling to the Philippines has recently been made easier by the opening of new Emirates flights connecting Lisbon to Manila via Dubai, Ambassador Lhuillier hopes to capitalize on this development to further foster the Philippines’ tie with Portugal.

Notwithstanding heavy rain and muddy grounds, the groups took the risk and travelled to be able to distribute the 3,000 Christmas packages consisting of rice, sugar, coffee, milk, sardines, corned beef, noodles, towel, blankets and slippers to families of mentioned Barangays. Repacking of the goods was made possible through the assistance of SM City Lanang in Davao on December 19.
Recipients were very thankful of the donations which will help them cope and celebrate Christmas for they have something to prepare for Noche Buena. The thank you’s from the residents were endless and the smiles on their faces were countless. They have not lost their Christmas spirit despite the loss and devastation brought by the calamity. “Walang Kapantay Magpahalaga”

Founded in 1987 by the current Philippine envoy to Portugal, Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier is currently managed by its President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier.
Philippe J. Lhuillier: A smile and a golden egg keep him going
Businessman and diplomat Philippe J. Lhuillier says he cannot explain why he feels happy most of the time.
Instrumental in building his father’s pawnshop business in Cebu into a dominant player in the country, he says with certainty that his happy disposition is one effective formula for success.
“When I wake up, I am already in a happy mood. My wife notices that, and she asked me once why I would jump around and make antics in the mornings,” Philippe tells SundayBiz.
His positive aura and innate affection for people perhaps are the reasons he was well loved by the Filipino community in Italy, where he served as Philippine ambassador from 1999 to 2010.
Recently, he was appointed by President Aquino to serve as Philippine ambassador to Portugal.
Award from Italy
Known for his leadership skills and warm nature, Philippe became the first Philippine ambassador to Italy to be given the prestigious award of “Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta Italiana” (Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity).
The Italian government gave him the award in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of goodwill between the Philippines and Italy.
The award was also in recognition of his efforts to help overseas Filipino workers based there.
During his 11-year post in Italy, Philippe opened the doors of the Philippine Embassy. The place became a venue for various activities that serve Filipinos in the foreign country—from computer seminars, to short courses in entrepreneurship, sports, and dialogues with OFWs.
“For our short courses, we would invite a guest speaker every week to teach Filipinos,” says Philippine. “Sometimes, when we had no speaker, I myself would teach them entrepreneurship,” he adds.
For Philippe, who handed over the leadership of Cebuana Lhuillier to his eldest son, Jean Henri, following his appointment to Italy, things that make him a fulfilled diplomat and a successful businessman are the same.
He carries along with him his positive outlook, his Christian values, and genuine concern for people whatever hat he is wearing.
Starting young
At only 8-years-old, the young Philippe started to learn independence and hard work, and already showed signs of his penchant for entrepreneurship.
At that age, he was sent by his Cebu-based parents to Manila to study. Every summer, he would go home to Cebu to learn from his father lessons about running a business. He would also help out in the day-to-day operation of the family business. His father, the late Henry Lhuillier, was a French consul to the Philippines who built pawnshops in Cebu in the 1930s.
“My father was strict in giving allowance, and so I know the value of hard work,” Philippe says. He says his father would give him money if he helped out in the pawnshop.
It was in grade school when Philippe’s entrepreneurial skills first manifested. Teachers in La Salle required students to bring rosaries every day. What Philippe would do is sell rosaries to his classmates who would forget to bring their rosaries. “I would sell a rosary, which I would get for 30 centavos, for 40 centavos,” he says. They would buy from me because they did not want to be reprimanded,” he says.
Seeing how his father valued hard work, Philippe says he has learned not only to work hard but also to love and be happy about working hard.
Golden egg
Philippe also says he has a golden egg that serves as his good luck charm. The golden egg, which symbolizes his positive outlook in life, was a gift from his father.
“I always have it with me,” he says, pointing to the golden egg displayed on his table.
On the family’s pawnshop business, Philippe expresses pride over his family’s pawnshop business (which eventually turned into a group of companies). He says it feels good to know that the family’s business is helping individuals, particularly by serving their short-term needs for cash.
“Pawnshops help people who are in need of short-term cash. Pawnshops contribute to the economy,” he says.
He says Cebuana Lhuiller, the flagship of a string of entities under the PJ Lhuiller Group of Companies, has worked to improve the image of pawnshops in the country. He says that while an old-school perception was that a pawnshop was “a place of last resort,” pawnshops in the country are now viewed more positively by customers.
He says in the case of Cebuana Lhuiller, it strives to give its customers the Filipino value of hospitality.
“In Cebuana Lhuillier, we tell our staff to say hello and to smile a lot to the customers. We want our customers to feel at home whenever they are in our pawnshops,” he says.
He says pawnshops in the Philippines, led by Cebuana Lhuiller, are very much different from those in other countries.
In China for instance, he says, a person who visits the pawnshop is required to drop his jewelry for pawning at a box at a high place. The client is not able to see the face of the attendant, he says.
“Here in the Philippines, we strive to give a much more pers
onal service—the Filipino way,” he says.
Christian values
Philippe, who went to La Salle from grade school to college, says he also credits the Christian values taught by the school in the molding of his character. The Christian-La Sallian education helped imbibe in him the values of compassion, discipline, and prayer, he says.
“I always carry a rosary in my pocket,” says Philippe. He never got rid of the habit since learning it from grade school.
Whenever things get tough, Philippe says he manages to keep on smiling. Besides hard work, Philippe counts on his faith, a positive outlook, and his golden egg to accomplish his objectives.
“Like what my father used to tell me, as long as I have the golden egg, I will be fine,” he says with a big smile.
Philippe, who aims to significantly build economic and social ties between the Philippines and Portugal as ambassador, says he takes with him his Christian values, his optimism, and his golden egg as he focuses on his new endeavor as ambassador to Portugal.

Ambassador Philippe Lhuillier pays courtesy call to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario
Manila, Philippines – Ambassador-designate to Portugal Philippe Lhuillier (right) calls on Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario to discuss the possibility of expanding tourism as well as trade, technology and cultural ties with the European country. Lhuillier, former ambassador to Italy, believes the primary objective for his new post is to foster diplomacy to promote the goals of national and economic security as well as the welfare of overseas Filipinos. Portugal’s economic development model has been slowly changing from one based on public consumption to one focused on exports, private investment and development of the high-tech sector. Business services have since overtaken more traditional industries such as textiles, clothing, footwear, cork (of which Portugal is the world’s leading producer), wood products, and beverages.

The activity allows for CLIS to get in touch with ACP claimants and see how they have fared after receiving their grants.
During the gathering, clients recounted the fire incidents that robbed them of their homes and possessions and how their insurance settlements helped in rebuilding their lives. They were impressed by the company’s two-day quick-claim process and were equally grateful for the smooth transactions they experienced under the care of Cebuana Lhuillier branch personnel.
CLIS team with CLIS Operations Manager Rhoneil Pascual and Claims Supervisor Ramon Gonzalez, gave the attendees premium Happiest Pinoy items after the session.

Meeting Winston Maxino, the Happiest Pinoy 2010 Awardee
I watch as he pause for a moment midway his speech. I was standing close on the side taking his photo and saw his face, suddenly overcame with shadow, I noticed he swallowed deep, trying to keep steady in front of a crowd of 30 plus people, trying to hide what he was feeling at that moment. For what looked like he was having a hard time reading his speech, little did people know he was grimacing in pain. In just a few seconds he got his composure back, smiling, while he deliver his speech as if nothing happened.
Such is the man named, Winston Maxino, a family man at his late forties, who is literally in constant pain after being diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). But despite his condition, he chose to show his sunny disposition and inspire others to be happy.
Winston narrated how as an asthmatic child, he was regularly an outcast but his persistence on trying to belong despite his condition still paid off. His scout master saw his other skills like excelling in knots or other non-physical aspects. Being diagnosed as an AS didn’t stop him from being happy, aside from wallowing in self-pity, he chose to accept his condition. But his trials didn’t end there, he received another blow in his life when his daughter was diagnosed with down syndrome. But his daughter’s frequent declaration of loving her life and the future made him realize that he has a lot to be grateful for no matter his life condition is. His body may be broken but that wouldn’t stop him from being happy as it is the choice he made. He enjoys making children laugh with his balloon knotting talents and tricks. He is also involved in helping the down syndrome society of the Philippines.
Winston’s resiliency was an inspiration to her family and friends. It didn’t go unnoticed as her sister nominated him for the Happiest Pinoy. An advocacy spearheaded by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, as they hope to promote positive values. Most of the pageants focus on the physical aspects, the most beautiful, the most sexy and more handsome. Why not look for the happiest?” says Jonathan Batangan, General Manager of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Agency.
After screening more than 200 nominees and interviewing the top 7 finalist, Winston’s demeanor and personality stood out to the top. He was awarded the Happiest Pinoy in 2010. From what I heard, he donated majority of his P200,000 winnings and continue to share his life-story to inspire more people.
Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions is again in search for another “Happiest Pinoy” this 2012. The prizes are bigger, P250,000 for the Happiest Pinoy Awardee and the rest of the top 10 finalist would receive P25,000 each. Those who nominate will also be given a token if their nominee wins.
