Common Diseases and Illnesses during the Rainy Season and How to Prevent it

The first step to avoid getting sick during the rainy season is to know what possible diseases you can get from the rain.

1. The Common Cold (“Sipon”)

Let us start with the most popular. Aside from the sneezing and dizziness, it’s what comes out of your nose that ruins your poise (“nakakasira ng poise”). It costs you a lot of money on tissue paper and it also destroys your dates with your girlfriend or boyfriend. You are lucky if you do not get a sore throat and fever, too.

Avoiding common colds needs only simple steps that many people always forget to do: covering the mouth when sneezing (“pag bumabahin”), washing your hands properly, and not touching your face. It is also important to get enough sleep, so that your immune system will be strong enough not to get infected by any virus (“para hindi tamaan ng sipon”).

2. Dengue

dengue

Now, this sickness will make you afraid. It is caused by a mosquito bite. It is dangerous. The symptoms are hard to detect. In fact, it can take as long as two weeks before you see the primary symptoms. By then, it is already too late. The disease has already spread all over your body (“malala na”). The danger signs are muscle pains, fever, and fatigue. Rashes (“butlig”) can appear a few days after the fever starts.

Prevention of dengue is important. If you have things around your house that are constantly in water (for example: fish, and plants), always keep the water clean. Beware of possible mosquito breeding grounds (“ingatan na huwag pamugaran ng lamok”).

3. Cholera

Drinking water infected by bacteria called Vibrio cholerae is the cause of cholera. The disease causes vomiting and severe diarrhea (“pagsusuka at pagtatae”), which can lead to dehydration afterwards.

The most important thing to do to avoid cholera is to make sure that your food is clean and safe to eat. Make sure that you know where you get your food and water. The rainy season can bring a cholera epidemic, so it is important to know the areas near your place that are already affected by cholera so you can avoid going there.

4. Typhoid

typhoid

Like cholera, typhoid is caused by food and water that have been contaminated (“maruming pagkain at tubig”). It’s even more dangerous because it’s highly infectious (“mabilis makahawa”). If one member of the family gets sick with typhoid, quarantine him or her so other family members will not be infected (“ibukod ang may sakit para hindi makahawa”).

Luckily, there are vaccines that can prevent typhoid. But, once you already have typhoid, it must be carefully treated and monitored (“maingat na gamutin at bantayan”). Dehydration is a danger, so make sure to drink a lot of fluids. Even after the patient gets well, he must still be careful because the disease can come back even after only two weeks.

These four diseases are all preventable and treatable. There is no reason for you not to enjoy the rain. For many Filipinos, rain is cleansing, and as long as you are careful about your health, you can enjoy and be happy when it is raining.

Affordable Life and Non-Life Insurance Now Available for Filipinos

Insurance products are still a bit foreign to the majority of common Filipinos. There is a general lack of awareness among the poor. Not only are they not aware of the existence of these products, they also do not perceive the value and importance of such in their lives.

In Comes Microinsurance

Of course, everyone tried to remedy the situation. Thus, we see an increased proliferation of TV commercials and other ad campaigns in favor of affordable life and non-life insurance products. According to the Insurance Commission (IC), there were about 28 million Filipinos already covered by microinsurance as of 2014.

That is a significant figure. Yes, it accounts for a small portion of the general population in the Philippines, yet it is already a significant increase compared to the dismal figures in the past few years. It is worth mentioning that most microinsurance providers in the country only offer a token coverage of PHP 5,000 to PHP 10,000 per household, which consumers may not find attractive.

However, if you consider that sum in the hands of a tricycle driver or say the fisher folk, it is already a considerable amount in case the bread winner isn’t able to provide for the family at the moment. That little money is insignificant to well-paid corporate types, but in the hands of the Filipino poor, that money will save lives.

Available Insurance for the Filipino Masses

nonlife insurance

Since there is a thrust to provide more affordable insurance products to the Filipino masses, they should be made aware of the available types of products that will be helpful to them. The common folks should at least know the difference between life and non-life insurance.

To make things simple, life insurance means that in case the person who bought the insurance product dies, the insurance company who sold the product will give a certain amount of money to the beneficiaries that the buyer has chosen previously.

Non-life insurance is almost the same except that one’s life is not the thing being insured. It is applied to property such as a house, boat, motorcycle, car, or truck. In case these things get damaged or destroyed, the insurance company will provide the buyer of the insurance a certain amount of money to cover the loss. All insurance products in the country fall into either category. The idea, of course, is that the future is uncertain. Thus, an insurance product can be a big help when disaster and loss strike.

Micro Insurance in the Philippines

micro insurance cebuana

Microinsurance is definitely good news for the Filipinos. It is interesting that smaller financial players, including pawnshops with a nationwide presence, have taken up the role of delivering these much needed products.

For instance, Cebuana Lhuillier offers a basic non-life insurance product that costs only PHP 25. It covers the insured for four months, offering up to PHP 20,000 for dismemberment or accidental death.

They also offer a group accident insurance for employees that costs only PHP 210, which will be valid for 1 year. Other insurance products include those for security guards, students, home insurance, and insurance for barangay police.

Again, the coverage amounts will seem small, but they’re substantial in the hands of the masang Pinoy. These are investments that the Filipinos should be aware of.

25 Easy Money Saving Tips for the 20-Something

To be in your 20s means you still have a lot of time to work and save money. Unfortunately, many Pinoys do not save. They waste all their income on unimportant and fleeting things (“sa mga walang kwentang bagay”) when they should invest or save a part of their salary for the future.

Here are 25 tips that you can apply in your life to start saving right away:

Set Up Your Savings:

save money for the future

1. Set aside money for things that can help you in the future. For example: emergency fund, life insurance, and investments.

2. Set a daily allowance for your transportation, food, and other necessities, and a little extra money for emergencies. Bring *only* that daily allowance when you go to work.

3. Set a savings target amount, and make a long-term plan to save that amount. For example: If you want to open a P10,000 investment account in 3 months, set aside P35 every day for 3 months.

4. Set a deadline for each savings goal and mark it on your planner or
calendar.

5. Use a smart phone app such as *Monefy * to record all your daily
expenses.

6. Open a savings account separate from your payroll ATM. If possible, open a passbook account without an ATM card.

7. Do automatic transfers from your payroll to your savings account to avoid temptation to spend (*para makaiwas sa tukso*).

8. Talk to a financial expert and ask what type of investment is best for you. It can be stocks, money market, mutual funds, etc.

Shop Wisely:

9. Always prepare a grocery list before going to the grocery store.

10. Keep a checklist on your phone of items you need to buy at the mall so you buy what is necessary.

11. Cut back on expenses that are not important, such as expensive coffee, so you can save money.

12. Watch out for promos and incentive programs for things you need to buy, such as toilet paper, and other regular supplies. Set aside money to buy in bulk (*maramihan*).

13. Cut your credit card. If you will not use your credit card for business, always pay in cash instead.

14. Do not buy something when you can borrow, such as books.

15. Buy prepaid load for your phone. It is only ok to get a postpaid plan if you will use it for your business.

16. Keep a list of cheap restaurants with delicious food on your phone. Do not eat in expensive
restaurants.

17. Invest in high quality clothes that you can wear again and again for many years; buy from good clothing brands such as H&M. Prioritize timeless and flexible designs.

Change Your Lifestyle:

18. Save money with the help of your friends. Save money on gasoline by car-pooling. Save money on food by cooking meals and eating together.

19. Do not go shopping or eating out on your free time. Think of how you will earn more money instead.

20. Cook food in bulk on Sundays and bring packed lunch (*baon*) to work.

21. Take care of your health. For example, take vitamin supplements so you will not get sick.

22. Limit your entertainment expenses. Find cheap ways to enjoy with friends and family. For example: playing board games and watching free movies.

23. Read and listen to experts on personal money matters, especially Filipino mentors like Francisco Colayco and Chinkee Tan.

24. Copy the habits of rich people who are careful in spending their money like Lucio Tan. Don’t copy celebrities who spend a lot of money on luxury (*luho*).

25. If you want to spend on luxury, earn more money by getting a sideline.

Filipinos like to live like a millionaire for a day, but if you start saving and investing your money now, in the near future, you will be a millionaire for life! Don’t waste any more time and start saving now!

Financial Analyst with Cerebral Palsy is Happiest Pinoy 2015

HP awards night

After an almost year-long search that gathered hundreds of thousands of entries from all over the Philippines and abroad, a financial analyst with Cerebral Palsy was hailed as the newest winner of Cebuana Lhuillier’s Search for the Happiest Pinoy. During the Filipiniana-themed awards night at the Solaire Resort and Casino Grand Ballroom on September 10, 28-year old Richardson Navor from Caloocan, bested nine other finalists and took home a cash prize worth P1 million and a trophy.

Navor is the third winner of the Search for the Happiest Pinoy which was first introduced in 2009. Launched in October of last year, the third edition came with the introduction of its own jingle, social media ambassadors and activations across the country. The campaign also rolled out several promotional activities, coordinating with different government sectors, school organizations and partners to encourage more Filipinos to submit nominations.

Breaking its own record, over 280,000 nominations were received this year, the most in the campaign’s three-year history.

“This is only the third edition of the search and it has already grown significantly, collecting more entries, and, hopefully, inspiring even more individuals. Richardson is a great addition to the search’s roster of model citizens. His story is one we can all learn and draw inspiration from to live happier and more meaningful lives no matter the challenges,” said Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Navor joins the ranks of Winston Maxino and Rommel Arellano with his own inspiring story. Despite being born with cerebral palsy, he has gone through life inspiring and influencing people, and always looking at the positive side of circumstances. His condition did not hinder him from getting a good education as he excelled in his studies. Besides being elected as the Student Council President, he also graduated magna cum laude and was given various leadership awards and recognitions including Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines and Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines.

When Navor’s mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer, he became the main source of strength of his family. He sought monetary assistance from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and from different people. He even sacrificed some of his allowance from his scholarship for his mother. Eventually, his mother was diagnosed cancer free.

Navor did not pass the CPA licensure exam but he continued to persevere and live life with positivity. He is now a financial analyst at IBM Philippines and continues to receive service awards for his advocacies. Dedicated to helping the youth and persons with disabilities, Navor formed an organization named People Uplifting the Student and the Handicapped (PUSH) which gives free leadership trainings, personality development seminars, and livelihood workshops to students and PWDs. PUSH also donated wheelchairs and canes to Yolanda survivors.

Navor was chosen through a series of screenings including deliberations and panel interviews. The final selection process was done through the collaborative efforts of judges who have achieved notable success in their respective fields. Gathering individuals of varying backgrounds, the board was composed of advertising guru Emily Abrera, motivational speaker and author Francis Kong, Supreme Court Legal Consultant, Atty. Ann Corominas, 2009 Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida, Camarines Sur representative Hon. Leni Robredo, TV news personality Luchi Cruz-Valdez, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions General Manager Jonathan Batangan, and the search’s past two winners–Winston Maxino and Rommel Arellano.

Besides Navor, two other individuals were recognized as two more awards were added to this year’s search. Arnel Genzola, a professor based in China, was declared as the Happiest OFW, while Cyprian Jade Basa, a student from Roxas City, was hailed as the Happiest Student. Meanwhile, the grand winner’s nominator, Loriel Macalindol Castillo, Navor’s friend, was also recognized and was given a cash prize.

The rest of the top ten finalists in this year’s search are Johnny Medrano, a watch and cellphone technician from Batangas; Rustie Quintana, an artist from Cagayan De Oro City; Rodolfo Mendoza, a PWD advocate from Nueva Ecija; Randy Halasan, a teacher from Davao City; Eduardo Hernal, Jr., a retired military officer turned pastor from Taguig City; Julia Marquez, a retired teacher from Batangas; Don De Vera, an architect from Las Piñas City; Cyprian Jade Basa, a student from Roxas City; and Naprey Almario, a non-government organization founder and businessman from Davao City.

Launched six years ago, the Search for the Happiest Pinoy aims to rekindle the values of optimism, resilience, and hope in Filipinos amidst difficulties. It highlights stories of individuals who have a positive outlook in life, have the proven ability to rise above life’s challenges, and have caused a positive impact in the lives of others.

Said partnership is one of the steps to strengthen the advocacy of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies’ (PJLGC) President & CEO Dr. Jean Henri D. Cebuana Lhuillier Sports solidifies support for Philippine sports

CL Sports PresCon

Cebuana Lhuillier Sports spearheaded by one of the country’s long-time and most supportive sports patron, Jean Henri Lhuillier, announced its 2015 plans to further boost the athletes’ chances to have stellar performances in tennis, softball, bowling and basketball competitions. Anchored on a two-pronged strategy of supporting national teams that have the potential to be at par with the world’s best and grassroots development to continuously tap and train fresh talents through a sustained sports program.

“Growing up, I have been fascinated with sports — its discipline and its benefits. But it is the realization that our country has a great selection of world-class athletes and a vast pool of potential talents that led me to discover, develop, and support our Filipino athletes,” said Lhuillier, who is concurrently the Chairman of the Board of the Philippine Tennis Association (PTA) and President of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL).

Under the leadership of Lhuillier,  RP Blu Boys and Blu Girls have brought numerous victories for the country such as multiple gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games and qualifying in World Cup and World Championhips.

For 2015, RP Blu Boys and RP Blu Girls are both gunning for the gold medal once again in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) and Blu Boys, 2nd placer in last year Asian Men’s Championships, will be competing in the World Men’s Championships to be held in Canada in June.

The Philippine Davis Cup team on the other hand, is fresh from a victory agains Sri Lanka last April and will be playing against Chinese Taipei in July. The core of the team led by Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales and Francis Casey Alcantara, will also be eyeing gold medals in the 2015 SEAG.  Top women player Katharina Lehnert is also being funded by Lhuillier.

To help our tennis players improve their world rankings, Cebuana Lhuillier Sports is supporting an ITF Futures tournament slated in October to be held in Manila.  Also, to help popularize tennis, Lhuillier has helped bring to the country the International Premiere Tennis League (IPTL) and is the team manager of the Serena Williams-led Philippine Mavericks.  Filipino doubles specialist, Treat Huey is one of the cornerstones of the team.

“I am very excited with all the possibilities that our softball and tennis players can achieve this year and next year.  Our national softball teams are a cinch for the gold medal in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) and we’re looking to break the top 10 in the Men’s Softball Championships.  Our tennis players on the other hand are also eyeing the doubles and team gold in SEAG, advance to Asia Group 1 of Davis Cup next year while Huey and Gonzales are gunning for a slot in next year’s doubles event of the Olympics.  Exciting times ahead of our national players in softball and tennis.” Lhuillier, revealed.

Parallel to the national team support, Cebuana Lhuillier Sports is also investing in grassroots development.  They have been running the Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group tennis circuit for 9 years already and for this year, more than 30 legs will be played nationwide.

For softball, Cebuana Lhuillier Sports supported the recent staging of the 9th edition of the Summer Grand Slam organized by ASAPHIL under the leadership of  Lhuillier.  Summer Grand Slam, considered as the national open for softball have always discovered outstanding talents every year, most of whom are now part of the national team.  The second half of 2015, ASAPHIL will also be organizing the annual Inter-Collegiate and Inter-Secondary Softball tournament to give national team aspirants the opportunity to showcase their skills.

Cebuana Lhuillier Sports also supports the National Youth Bowling team as part of its grassroots sports programs.  The National Youth Bowling Team, led by the sensational Enzo Hernandez, recently bagged 2 silvers and 2 bronzes at the 18th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Macau.

For basketball, Lhuillier is managing his own team Cebuana Gems who is currently the league leader in the PBA D-League.  Members of the team Norbert Torres and Almond Vosotros were part of the recently victorious team that ruled the 2015 Southeast Asian Basketball Association .  They are also part of the squad gearing up for SEAG.  Lhuillier was also the team manager of the team that won the gold medal of the 1993 SEAG.  Members of that squad include GILAS players Gary David, Ranidel De Ocampo and Marc Pingris.

Proof of Cebuana Lhuillier Sports and Jean Henri Lhuillier successful sports programs are the stories of current national players tennis star Francis Casey “Niño” Alcantara and bowling sensation Enzo Hernandez.  Alcantara was discovered while playing in the Cebuana Lhuillier Age-Group tennis circuit and was supported by Lhuilier in his international juniors tournaments.  Alcantara eventually won the Australian Open Juniors Doubles competition in 2009 which paved the way for him to land a tennis scholarship in Pepperdine University where he graduated recently.  He is now part of the tennis team to the Davis Cup and SEAG competitions.

Hernandez on the other hand is a product of the national youth bowling program supported by Cebuana Lhuillier Sports.  He has improved tremendously the past few years that he is now spearheading not just the national youth team but also the RP men’s team.

“The stories of Nino and Enzo encourage me to continue with what we have been doing in Cebuana Lhuillier Sports.  I know we are running something good and I hope that more members of the private sector will also start making contributions in our quest for having more world-class athletes such as Niño and Enzo”, added Lhuillier.

Ambassador PJ Lhuillier leads audience with Pope and receives blessing for Magellan Expedition

Vatican City – Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier led the committee of the Magellan Expedition during a recent audience with the Pope at the Vatican.

Ambassador Lhuillier was part of the delegation which included the Mayor of Lisbon, Portugal Antonio Costa, the Mayor of Sabrosa, Portugal Jose Manuel de Carvalho Marques, the Mayor of Seville, Spain Juan Ignacio Zoido Alvarez, and other members of the Magellan Expedition committee.

The Magellan Expedition is a multi-city event that will re-trace the route of Ferdinand Magellan 500 years after his expedition circumnavigated the world. Among the places Magellan visited during his voyage were Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Cabo Verde, South Africa, Indonesia, Brunei, Guam, and the Philippines, where the Portugese explorer fell to his demise in 1521. Each city will have a celebration between 2018 until 2022, to mimic the four years of the original Magellan Expedition.

While he was still a Cardinal in Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, was among those initially involved in the planning for the Quincentennial Anniversary of Magellan’s original voyage. The European-led expeditions were crucial in spreading Christianity to the East, and echoes the missionary zeal of the Catholic Church.

“Receiving the Pope’s blessing gives us affirmation in aspiring to recreate Magellan’s legendary journey. The Magellan Expedition will not only be a historical event, but is expected to have cultural, religious, and economic impact to the countries involved, including the Philippines,” Ambassador Lhuillier said.

During his encounter with the Pope, Ambassador Lhuillier personally thanked the Holy See for his recent visit to the Philippines. He also took the opportunity to have his rosary blessed by the Pope during the said meeting.

Ambassador PJ Lhuillier meets Chief of Portuguese Navy

On March 26, Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier of the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal paid a courtesy call to Admiral Luís Manuel Fragoso, Chief of the Portuguese Navy.

The courtesy call provided Ambassador Lhuillier the opportunity to express the Embassy’s appreciation to the Portuguese Navy, particularly the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers (MRCC) in Lisbon and Ponta Delgada in the Açores islands, for the vital role they play in evacuating Filipino seafarers in need of medical treatment or attention due to medical issues or accidents onboard their ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Ambassador Lhuillier likewise acknowledged the Portuguese Navy’s timely alerts to the Embassy whenever a Filipino seafarer has been airlifted to a Portuguese medical facility. This enables the Embassy to quickly respond to the situation and coordinate with the relevant shipping agent in order to ensure that the rescued Filipino seafarer’s welfare and needs are attended to while undergoing medical treatment, and for the eventual repatriation of the seafarer.

Admiral Fragoso also welcomed and expressed his support for Ambassador Lhuillier’s initiative to propose a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Maritime Search and Rescue between the Philippine Coast Guard and the Portuguese Navy. A draft of the proposed Memorandum of Understanding is currently under review by the Portuguese government.

Noting that Portugal has the 13th largest maritime zone and jurisdiction in the world, Ambassador Lhuillier believes that there is much for both sides to learn and exchange best practices in the area of maritime search and rescue and other related concerns.

Camiguin bet shines in singles events in 2015 summer netfest

GOVERNOR JJ Romualdo’s hospitality was aptly rewarded in the leg opener of the 2015 Cebuana Lhuillier age-group tennis summer events held recently in Camiguin island.

This came after homegrown pride George Gogo of Mambajao, Camiguin stamped his class in the singles competition crowded by the fancied bets from Cagayan de Oro who are members of the Philippine Tennis Academy-Cagayan de Oro City Satellite Training Center.

In fact, the little-known Gogo won the premier boys 18-under title at the expense of Cebu-based campaigner Francis Hidalgo.

“Indeed, Gogo did a great job for the host province. It was also an honor for Governor Romualdo who never missed the chance providing fellowship dinner to Camiguin leg participants every year,” organizer and ITF-licensed referee Mario Inguito Craiz told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Also favored to prevail in the other age categories are the Cagayan de Oro and Lanao Norte netters spearheaded by Janelle Carmela Llavore and last year’s winningest 10-under campaigner Brent Signmond Cortes.

The Palaro-bound Llavore, playing out of Corpus Christi School, is fresh from a twin-title finish in the Globe 17th Head Graphene XT Junior Tennis Satellite Circuit concluded over the weekend at the Nazareth Lawn Tennis Club in Cagayan de Oro.

PH Cuppers clinch tie via doubles win

Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara secured a four-set win over Sharmal Dissanayake and Dineshkantan Thangarajah, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, as the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippines squad clinched their Davis Cup tie with Sri Lanka with an insurmountable 3-0 lead at Valle Verde Country Club.

The doubles victory rendered today’s reverse singles—Tierro against Dissanayake and Alcantara against Harshana Godamanna—insignificant, as the hosts assured themselves of a semifinal berth, possibly against Chinese Taipei, which holds a 2-0 lead over Lebanon in their matchup.

“It was a very good showing for the team and hopefully that will boost our morale going into the next tie,” said PH team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Non-playing team captain Roland Kraut stated they would still aim for a 5-0 result as he replaced Ruben Gonzales with Alcantara in the fifth rubber. The two reverse singles will both be best-of-three affairs.

Gonzales gave the Filipinos a 2-0 lead late Friday after Patrick John Tierro won the opening singles with a come-from-behind 5-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Godamanna. Gonzales followed with an easier 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Dissanayake.

“I think we have regained our confidence after last year (when PH lost to Pakistan), and we will go all out tomorrow to finish the tie on a high note,” added Kraut.

Huey and Alcantara came back after losing the first set, showcasing superb work at the net and sharply angled volleys, capping their masterful display by racing to 5-2 in the fourth set.

“First set they really played well and I was so tight I was missing shots,” said Alcantara. “But after the service break in the second set, we relaxed and from there we took over.”

Cebuana Lhuillier and One Network Bank join forces for wider scope of domestic remittance in Mindanao

Present in this photo are (from left): Cebuana Lhuillier Services Corporation Noel Cristal; Cebuana Lhuillier Vice President Philippe Andre Lhuillier; One Network Bank President Alex Buenaventura; One Network Bank Marketing and Communications Head Emily Gamir; and, One Network Bank Makati Branch Manager/Liason Officer Joemel Manalo.

The country’s largest microfinancial company teams up with the country’s largest rural bank, One Network Bank, to provide more avenues for easier domestic remittance to Filipinos in the south through a Memorandum of Agreement signing held recently in Makati City.

Through the partnership, Filipinos can easily send and receive money to and from their relatives who are based in any part of the country. With Cebuana Lhuiller’s extensive network of branches and plus One Network Bank’s dominance in the Mindanao region, clients can enjoy efficiency and convenience when it comes to domestic remittance.

“We at Cebuana Lhuillier are very happy to be part of this exciting venture with One Network Bank. With their help, we can expand our reach in Mindanao and bring financial services closer to our fellow Filipinos in areas where banks cannot reach them. This is in line with the company’s goal – which is to help the unbanked and underbanked Filipinos increase their financial awareness and give them the means to stand up on their own,” Cebuana Lhuillier Services Corporation General Manager Noel Cristal said.

ONB President Alex Buenaventura shared, “Over the years, we have expanded our initiatives to enhance service delivery especially in countryside locations that have limited financial infrastructure. Through the remittance solution forged with Cebuana Lhuillier, rural areas of Mindanao and Panay will be able to enjoy more options for sending and receiving money.”

One Network Bank is the country’s largest rural bank after the consolidation of three (3) rural banks, namely: Rural Bank of Panabo, Network Rural Bank (Davao), and Provident Rural Bank of Cotabato. As of February this year, the bank has a network of 106 branches strategically located in Mindanao and in Panay with 171 PeraAgad ATMs.

Donor Spotlight: Beatriz and Jean Henri Lhuillier ’92

Jean LhuillierJean Henri Lhuillier

“Choose to be the best”

Jean Henri Lhuillier ´92 has lived a life of innovation and service.  He graduated Saint Mary’s as a business major with a minor in economics, and his business acumen has transformed the financial landscape in the Philippines, his home country.  He is the president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, part of the PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies that was started by his family.  Jean Henri and his wife Beatriz have recently made a large donation to the School of Economics and Business Administration’s (SEBA) Responsible Investment Fund, which pools money for Saint Mary’s students to manage a real-life mutual fund, giving them invaluable lessons in investing with sound business practices and social responsibility.  “I am a believer in corporate social value (CSV), creating economic value for your company in a way that also creates value for society,” said Jean Henri, who serves on the SEBA Advisory Board.  “I have always believed in giving back – to my country and to my college.  Managing the SEBA Responsible Investment Fund will teach students how to assess a company’s corporate social value in order to invest in viable, socially responsible companies.”

CSV has played an important role in Jean Henri’s success because he has always considered meeting people’s needs to be crucial to the direction of his business.  The 25-year-old family business, which began with four pawnshops, is now the leading pawnshop chain in the Philippines, serving 30,000 customers daily with over 1,700 branches and around 6,000 employees.  The business has expanded into a network of companies with a full range of financial services.  “Pawnshops are looked at as the ‘poor man’s bank,’” explained Jean Henri.  “Many people in the Philippines do not have a bank account, so we act as a small rural bank.”  Some of the services they provide are money remittance (sending money from the U.S. back to the Philippines, for example), bill payment (similar to PayPal), electronic loading of money onto mobile phones (they serve 60 million mobile phones), ATM outlets and collections.  Another part of their business of which Jean Henri is particularly proud is microinsurance.  “We wanted to provide insurance policies that the masses could afford and understand,” he noted.  “These are policies with a very low monthly payment, just one or two dollars, to insure against a small accident.  Today we have 10 million clients all over the Philippines,” Jean Henri said proudly.

Lhuillier, Jean Henri came to Saint Mary’s from a Catholic boarding high school on the Peninsula.  He liked the small feel of Saint Mary’s and that it was a school of the Christian Brothers, where his father also had been educated.  Jean Henri’s best experience at the College was playing varsity tennis for two years, as well as making great friends.  He also enjoyed taking different classes during Jan Term, especially the ones that had no relation to his business major, such as art and psychology.  “Saint Mary’s was a safe educational environment with no distractions,” remembered Jean Henri.  “I learned organization, which has carried over to my work habits.  It was a beautiful place to go to college.”  After graduating, he went to a school in Los Angeles to learn to identify and evaluate gemstones, an important part of the pawnshop business.  He tried to start a business in America but did not devote all of his time to getting it off the ground, flying back and forth to the Philippines to attend to business there.  “Failing early and failing big,” in Jean Henri’s words, taught him an important lesson:  success comes from failure.  He returned to Manila to concentrate on the family business, working in different departments to learn the scope of the business.  He became vice president of Cebuana Lhuillier in 1998 and began transforming the pawnshop business into the financial empire it is today.

With success comes the responsibility to give back, and an important way that the Lhuilliers give back to their country is through the promotion of sports, which has always been a large focus for them.  Beatriz, known as Bea, won a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in taekwondo, and Jean Henri continues to be involved in sports.  He is the president of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines, manager of the Philippine Davis Cup Team, and chairman of the board of the Philippine Tennis Association.  Concurrently, he is the team manager of the International Premier Tennis League’s Manila Mavericks.  Their company, Cebuana Lhuillier, also owns a professional basketball team, the Cebuana Gems, which is part of the Philippine Basketball Association Development League.  “I have enjoyed playing sports my whole life, and I enjoy giving back to my country,” said Jean Henri.

Bea stays busy raising their four children — Stephan, 14, and Sebastien, 11, both of whom excel in tennis, soccer and music; Dominique, 7, involved with ballet and gymnastics; and Julien, 5, who is a golfer.  Bea is also involved with the family foundation, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, which has funded disaster relief, feeding programs and educational scholarships.  The foundation also has begun a project this year to help the thousands of Filipinos who have not graduated high school by opening the Alternative Community Learning Centers, where people can finish high school in their own time.  Sixteen Cebuana Lhuillier centers opened this year, and they hope to have over 60 centers open by 2016.

As if Jean Henri was not busy enough, he also serves as the consul general to the Philippines for the Republic of San Marino, a microstate of 30,000 people surrounded by Italy.  As consul general, he promotes trade and friendship between the people of the two countries and is also proud to have placed Filipino orphans with families in San Marino.  Jean Henri comes from a long line of family members in service.  His grandfather, Henry, was French consul to the Philippines, and his father, Philippe, was formerly the Philippine ambassador to Rome and is currently the Philippine ambassador to Portugal.  This past year Jean Henri was knighted by the Republic of San Marino, receiving the rank of Official Knight of the Equestrian Order of Saint Agatha, due to his outstanding service in strengthening the ties between San Marino and the Philippines.

Jean Henri Lhuillier’s guiding principles have been “to believe in yourself, to choose to do what is right and to choose to be the best.”  Saint Mary’s can be very proud of this alumnus and world business leader who chooses to give back in so many ways.

Portugal city of Sabrosa kicks off sisterhood agreement with Cebu City with business trip

Delegates from Sabrosa, Portugal with Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier after their recent visit to Sabrosa sister city Cebu. (from left to right, front row) Regional Business Association President Dr. Luis Tao; Sabrosa City Mayor Jose Manuel de Carvalho Marques, Ambassador PJ Lhuillier, Mesao Frio Mayor Prof. Alberto Perreira, Regional Wine and Tourism Association Representative Dr. Celeste Marques, (back row) Mayor’ Marques wife Dr. Carla Dinis, and Regional Local Development Association Representative Dr. Helene Lapa.

Delegates from Sabrosa City, Portugal, headed by its City Mayor José Manuel de Carvalho Marques, recently visited the Philippines for an official business trip.

The trip was under the auspices of Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier.

Amb. Lhuillier said, “We are glad to have this opportunity to host the delegation headed by Mayor Marques. The trip has produced fruitful partnerships and has started the rediscovery of each other by the two countries.”

The Portuguese delegation’s first stop was Cebu City, which signed a Sister-City agreement with Sabrosa late last year to widen ties between the two metropolis. Both belong to the Network of Magellan Cities composed of places encountered by Magellan in his circumnavigation of the world. Sabrosa is Magellan’s birthplace, while Cebu is where Magellan died in battle in 16th century.

While in Cebu, the Portuguese delegation met with local officials and the business community in the city, and had exploratory meetings with entities or institutions interested to pursue with the Sabrosa city government areas of cooperation in European Community funded projects.

The Cebu visit also laid the groundwork for the two cities’ pursuit of partnership in the areas of culture, trade, tourism and education.

The Cebu trip had in fact been an opportunity for the Portuguese guests to experience first-hand Philippine culture as they witnessed the recently concluded Sinulog festival.

Mayor Marques said, “We thank Ambassador Lhuillier and our host in Cebu Mayor Michael Rama for the opportunity to experience their culture and meet with local businessmen. We are going home to Portugal more knowledgeable of the Philippines, and the business opportunities that are present in this country.”

The trip was also an important part of the preparations for the celebration of the 500th year of Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world in 2019 and 2022 – a celebration being spearheaded by Sabrosa.

Located north of Portugal, Sabrosa is host to a large number of commercial and industrial establishments and is in the heartland of Portugal’s famed Douro wine producing region.

Last year, Sabrosa named one of the main roads emanating from the Magellan monument at the western entry point to Sabrosa to Avenida Cidade de Cebu, in honor of the relationship of the two cities.

How Money Can Buy Happiness

Money, they say, can’t buy happiness. This is perhaps because of the many negative connotations that the word money has. Money, in many cultures, is highly associated with materialism, hyperconsumerism, and even greed—reducing it from the many possibilities it can do.

But the association of negative meanings to money is missing a fundamental fact: that money is merely an object, and the way it is used by its creators (that’s us humans) enables its power or otherwise.

The power of money is limitless. Yes, it can buy happiness. But that’s as long as it is spent right. The point is to know how to make the right decisions, the right choices, and the right financial move.

Buying Security

Even if we turn the world upside down, we can never veer away from the fact that we need money to have our basic necessities covered. We need money to secure food, shelter, medicines, and even access to information. This may be a sad reality, but it doesn’t mean we can’t do anything about it. Again, the point is to spend our money right. Make the right choices.

Here’s another important thing to remember: do not overspend, particularly on the basics. Secure just what you need. Consider just enough security to make you happy.

Buying Peace of Mind

Once the basic necessities are fulfilled, the next logical move is to invest in things worth investing, such as protection for your property, health, and even life. This is again one of the smartest moves one can do. Anisha Sekar, the Chief Consumer Advocate at the personal finance website Nerd Wallet, advises to buy some insurance for the simple reason—to have peace of mind.

Getting the worries and headaches that come with financial risks out of the way is key to feeling better about circumstances, and ultimately to being positive about life.

The Value of Small Changes

“Because we adapt easily to change,” Jeff Atwood of Lifehacker.com says, “the most effective use of money is to bring frequent change, not just ‘big bang’ changes that you will quickly grow acclimated to.” Atwood summarizes one principle proposed by psychologists Elizabeth Dunn, Daniel Gilbert, and Timothy Wilson in their paper If Money Doesn’t Make You Happy, Then You Probably aren’t Spending it Right published in 2011. The principle tells us to break up large purchases into smaller ones over time so we can savor the experience. This consequently spreads the happy feeling over time. More will always be merrier.

The Value of Anticipation

Anticipation is a strong source of happiness. And this may be eliminated when one does impulse buying. Instant gratification, most often than not, leads one to buy things he can’t afford, and doesn’t truly want. Atwood suggests, citing one principle in the paper, “For maximum happiness, savor (maybe even prolong!) the uncertainty of deciding whether to buy, what to buy, and the time waiting for the object of your desire to arrive.”

The Value of Sharing

The same paper also proposes that we spend some part of our money to help others. Atwood summarizes, “Anything we can do with money to create deeper connections and reinforce positive feelings about ourselves and others.” Happiness, after all, is all about being positive at the end of day.

Cebuana Lhuillier champions financial inclusion for Filipino masses with wider microinsurance offering

Financial institutions like banks have served the needs of middle and high-income classes – the moneyed classes, but often leave the low-income ones, especially those in remote areas, underserved, if not totally unserved.

Most of these low-income families also do not have access to government’s social security agencies and have no healthcards to help them out during emergencies. Thus, when misfortune hits them hard, these poor households find it hard to cope with and manage the risks they face and get mired in debt from relatives and friends, left with no means to rebuild their damaged properties, or face death unable to afford expensive medical treatments.

Cebuana Lhuillier saw this need to provide the Filipino masses with quality and affordable insurance protection when 15 years ago, in 1999, it established its microinsurance arm, the Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) to further fulfill its chosen mandate of bringing financial inclusion to the Filipino masses through financial products and services backed up by the country’s major and most reputable insurers.

CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan said, “We are committed to our promise to provide relevant and responsive micro-insurance products and services for Filipinos. We want to assure them peace of mind knowing that they will be assisted financially in times of emergencies.”

The company primarily serves the needs of the low income sector which is the most vulnerable to risks and hazards like death and injury, sudden illness, and loss of lives and properties from natural and man-made calamities, to name a few.

With fifteen years of service in the micro-insurance industry, CLIS has introduced a variety of unique insurance products, programs, and services that aim to secure every facet of their lives at the most affordable premiums.

Cebuana Lhuillier has recently offered not only traditional insurance products but also products customized to the needs of specific groups like TODACare for transport operators and drivers, TanodCare for community volunteers, StudentCare for students, BuildersCare for construction workers, EmployeeCare for employees, SecurityCare for security guards, among others.

To date, CLIS’s micro-insurance products have covered more than 15 million Filipinos. Last year, its premiere microinsurance product, the Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP), sold 14 million certificates covering more than 5 million Filipinos making it one of the most successful microinsurance products in the country today.

Expanding micro-insurance product portfolio and reaching out

After introducing micro-insurance products and services made more accessible through the country’s largest pawnshop chain, CLIS expands its affordable insurance offering with a wider variety of products for the poor and the marginalized and bringing these products to where the target customers are.
