Managing Finances during Emergencies and Calamities

Emergencies bring many forms of expenses, may it be for health or for home. However, not many of us are aware that there are ways to decrease our expenditures in times of crisis. Being in a calamity requires not just a peace of mind, but also financial smarts. Only then could we be able to avoid spending big amounts of money to cope with tragedy. With these in mind, we enumerated a couple of ways to manage your finances in times of emergency, most important, how to prepare for one financially. Take note that proper planning is key to doing the following pointers. Always be ready for anything.

1. Save up for future use.

There are certain moments in which you may need an extra cash just to be able to pay for emergency utilities and rations. It would be wise to remember to at least have your own emergency fund so you may be able to have just enough amounts of cash to help you during calamities. Keep your cash in a safe, yet easy to access container, one which only you are aware of so that you may readily acquire cash when everything goes to panic due to calamities. Also, never rely too much on ATM’s, as usually they tend to go offline after a storm passes, giving you more to be concerned about in terms of where to withdraw that much needed cash. Consider opening up an emergency savings account or designate a credit card exclusively for emergency use.

2. Protect your home with precautionary measures.

It is always wise to at least try and make your home storm/calamity/damage proof. They say that prevention is better than cure, which is why, if you’re able to, install a few fire alarms at home. A simple smoke can set the alarm off, making sure you’d have enough time to at least extinguish the small fire before it becomes a huge inferno. There are also some of us who live in earthquake prone areas, an indication that one should arrange their furniture in a way that it wouldn’t fall over any of our loved ones. Spending a bit right now would save you from the larger amount of expenditures caused by tragedy due to lack of precautionary measures.

Managing Finances during Emergencies and Calamities2

3. Make an inventory of your possessions.

Most insurance claims require you to present a list of your beloved furniture, accessories, etc. Sometimes, a simple list may not even be enough, as you may need to present images of your belongings; this is due to the fact that most insurance companies are strict when it comes to claims. Make a video of your possessions if you can. Creating an inventory now may assure you that you would have your insurance claims in no time.

4. When it comes to insurance, choose wisely.

Like any form of membership, it is appropriate to study the policies of an insurance firm. Understand the dos and don’ts, find out which is covered and which isn’t, know which calamities or emergencies are included in their claims. Take note of this important step to avoid misunderstanding and losing more than what you had bargained for.

5. Know the extent of the damage.

Remember the very first step? Save up for future emergencies. This is where your well-kept cash may come in handy. So you had done everything in your power to at least tone down the damages to your home and belongings due to calamities. However, you would also need to consider estimating their prices to keep track of total loss. This is very much connected with steps 1, 3, and 4, as they all involve proper management of your resources in times of emergency.

Managing Finances during Emergencies and Calamities3

When it comes to calamity, you can never be too sure, so you must always be prepared. Property damage is a heavy burden to carry, but much heavier is it to carry injuries and their related expenses. As an employee, you would also be absent from work due to the injuries, hence your need to recover while missing many paid days of work. Worry no more, as here at Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnshop, we offer the EmployeeCARE, a Group Personal Accident Insurance specially designed for employees. It covers Accidental Death, Disablement & Dismemberment (ADD&D), Accidental Medical Cash Aid, Burial Benefit (Accident/Sickness), Unprovoked Murder & Assault (UMA), Motorcycling and Personal Liability. How to Reduce Motorcycle Insurance Costs

We love heroic moments in movies. When the hero rides his motorcycle, shoots the bad guys, and jumps off in the nick of time to hang on an airplane where the kidnapped damsel in distress is being kept, we almost jump out of our seats in the cinema, hoping that we may someday do the same things in real life. Real life, on the other hand, may prove very destructive when it comes to vehicles. Yes, movie heroes may survive multiple motorcycle crashes, as what the director instructs him to do. In real life, we may not be too lucky though, especially as motorcycles are more likely to be thrown off in a collision. Those of us who own a motorcycle would have to worry about two things; injuries and property damage. With that being said, what better way to avoid big expenditures (whether in hospitals or repair shops) than to avail a motorcycle insurance. We had enumerated a few tips to get the most out of your motorcycle insurance.

1. The right coverage.

The great thing about purchasing insurance is you would be able to study its policies. We are not just referring to minor scratches in your motorcycle. Losing a tire is one thing, but rendering the motorcycle totally non-ridable is another. No worries, as certain coverage and premiums give you many options when it comes to availing the claim just right for you.

2. To add or not to add.

As much as our first advice suggests that you get as much premium as possible from your insurance, please note that too much of anything isn’t also good. Get the premium that you only need. Know your motorcycle so you may also know the type of risk that it may be involved in. The very reason you are getting a motorcycle insurance is that you are avoiding big amount of expenses after an accident, so why spend so much for an unneeded premium before the accident?

How to Reduce Motorcycle Insurance Costs2

3. Be on time.

Insurance involves payment, so you should pay regularly to avoid penalties. As with our regular bills like water and electricity, we should always remember to pay our insurance/s as well. Separate as they seem, insurance companies implement penalties if you’re not able to pay on time. While riding your motorcycle, keep your eyes on the road and focus on safety, but when you get off it, remember that there are also bills to pay aside from the fun rides.

4. Choose wisely.

We are not just referring to your choice of insurance, but also the type of motorcycle that you would like to purchase. You may choose a less powerful engine as this can technically help to reduce your insurance premium, as would an older, less expensive motorcycle. Choosing a bike with lots of modifications will also grant you an expensive premium as they may cost more to repair or replace, not to mention, be more appealing to motorcycle thieves.

How to Reduce Motorcycle Insurance Costs3

You finally decide to avail of motorcycle insurance. However, you would prefer one that would really look out for you in times of need. No need to worry, as here at Cebuana Lhuillier, we offer the MotorCARE Insurance, a Standard Comprehensive Motorcar Insurance that covers Own Damage (OD), Theft, Loss and/or Damage, Excess Bodily Injury (EBI), Excess Property Damage (EPD), and Acts of God/Nature (AOG/AON). Cebuana Lhuillier inks first deal with South Korean partner

Continuing to expand its reach worldwide, Cebuana Lhuillier recently sealed a partnership with KEB Hana Bank (formerly Korea Exchange Bank), a financial institution based in Seoul. Adding to its international remittance service, the linkage marks Cebuana Lhuillier’s first partnership with a South Korean bank.

Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, states that the milestone deal  between the two brands is a tremendous opportunity as both aim to cater to the estimated 63,000 Filipinos based in South Korea. “Having a common vision and principles in customer service, I believe KEB Hana Bank is an ideal partner that can help us in serving Filipinos in Korea. We are excited and very optimistic with this new venture as it will finally answer the apparent need for a fast and secure money remittance service between these two countries,” he said.

Through this partnership, Filipinos can now send cash remittance from Korea through any of KEB Hana Bank’s 357 branches in the country to be paid out through any of Cebuana Lhuillier’s more than 1,800 branches in the Philippines.

Cebuana Lhuillier grants instant microinsurance claims to fire victims

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) gave immediate help and assistance to families affected by the fire which raged Port Area last week, through another Claims RAPIDO (Rapid Action in a Disaster-Stricken Area Operations) activity.

Cebuana Lhuillier Claims_RAPIDO

Cebuana Lhuillier representatives gave claims proceeds to five microinsureance clients, on-the spot. Other families were insured with Cebuana Lhuillier’s flagship microinsurance product, Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP), and were consequently entitled to fire cash assistance worth up to Php5,000 for each Php25 policy.

Since it was implemented, there has been eight Claims RAPIDO activities throughout the country.

Recently, the pawnshop launched one of its official insurance products for its disaster resilience advocacy called ACP Gold. It features micro-life coverage as addition to ACP’s basic coverage on accidental death, dismemberment and disability, fire cash assistance and unprovoked murder and assault.

“This is our way of proving that CebuanaLhuillier is really serious in its advocacy of helping build a disaster-resilient nation as what we have committed at the start of 2016, which is also in line with our goal of making every Filipino financially-included. As what we have been cascading to all Filipinos nationwide, microinsurance is an effective tool for disaster preparedness and through activities like Claims RAPIDO, we want people to realize the importance and the use of microinsurance especially when disaster strikes,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said.

Claims RAPIDO is one of Cebuana Lhuillier’s effort to improve claims processing service aligned with the company’s disaster resilience advocacy.

“More than anything else, our Claims RAPIDO activity is really intended to re-ignite hope among our clients in times of disasters like fire. We want to instill in their minds that CebuanaLhuillier is ready to help and is quick in providing them with their microfinancial needs at such trying times. Instead of waiting for the ACP beneficiaries to come to our branches, we go the extra mile to serve them directly and instantly,” CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan said.

10 Money Budgeting Tips During ‘ber’ months

It’s that time of the year again! While other countries celebrate the yuletide season at the beginning of December, we Filipinos welcome the holidays as early as September. And while we enjoy every event that comes our way, whether we like it or not, expenses are always nearby. But no worries, we have got you covered, as here are the top 10 tips on how to properly budget during the “ber” months.

1. To upgrade or not?

Discount on gadgets are common during the Holidays, however, one should always remember the quotation “if it isn’t broken, don’t replace it,” as there is no need to upgrade if your current smartphone still works well.

2. Expensive cuts or budget cuts?

Expensive salons promise a more stylish look for the holidays. However, there will always be practical ways in making ourselves presentable without spending too much. Buying affordable cosmetics and hair care shampoos are great substitute for overpriced parlors.

3. Use coupons.

10 Money Budgeting Tips During ber months2

It is in the nature of Filipinos to save, especially with the help of promos. Malls usually provide discounts during the ‘ber’ months. As the saying goes, “take advantage of Buy 1 Take 1 so your cash wouldn’t be none.”

4. Do not let any resource go to waste.

Our parents would always tell us not to waste food during meals. This same rule applies even now. No need to buy food that would go to waste if you still have a few left in your refrigerator. Other simple things such as paper, water, etc. are included in this rule.

5. Turn off and unplug.

Take it easy with the Christmas lights, it isn’t even December yet. Turn off and unplug everything that is not in use.

6. Commute wisely.

Most would commute to save money; however, we should also look for cost-effective ways to travel during the holiday rush. Look for PUVs that take shortcuts, which would otherwise make us ride twice just to get to our destination.

7. Old gift to new gift.

Have any gifts from last year that you haven’t even used at all? Repackage and use that instead as a Christmas present, just don’t give it to the same person though.

8. Make your own present.

Why buy when you can make one? Your loved ones will even be impressed with your creativity. Christmas cards and hand-decorated mugs are a perfect example.

9. It’s the thought that counts.

You don’t have to give everyone a present. Simple gestures such as greetings and acknowledging party invitations are sure to warm their hearts.

10. Track your budget

10 Money Budgeting Tips During ber months3

Saving and reusing your resources would amount to nothing without practicing self-control. Choosing value meals over restaurants can help you save big. Prioritize due dates. Needs first, wants last.

Want to add more to your budget aside from the ones you had saved? Cebuana Lhuillier’s Pawning Service accepts an array of items, from jewelry to gadgets, as collaterals. They also lead the pawning industry by offering safety and the highest appraisal rate in the industry in its more than 1,800 branches nationwide. Visit your nearest Cebuana Lhuillier branch now – we assure a fast, easy and secure transaction.

Things to Know Before Applying for a Credit Card

Credit cards are life savers. When you run out of cash, with it, you may definitely buy now and pay later. However, there are also some credit card holders who have their own horror stories when it comes to owning one, usually due to misuse and lack of discipline. We at Cebuana Lhuillier value your insight regarding your expenses and financial choices as well. Hence, we created a list of things to consider before applying for a credit card.

1. Spending habits

Everything begins with you. It is your choice and your choice alone that would determines whether you are ready to own a credit card or not. Are you the type of person who would spend for an expensive gadget every time a new model is released? Or are you the type of person who would instead save for future emergencies. It is important to know your ability to self-discipline, especially when it comes to spending, as owning a credit card may also bring temptations to purchase many items without realizing the risk of going over the limit.

2. Credit limit

Payment using a credit card is basically like borrowing money from the bank. Credit limit is set by the bank (depending on the conditions discussed during your application) so that you may only avail within a certain range of amount. If you lose track of your spending, there is a strong possibility that you will go over the limit. Most of the time, this will result in a bad credit history, which may help the bank decide whether they would still let you borrow money in the future or not.

3. Penalties and charges

This is one of the many scary things that may happen when you go over your spending limit. Aside from a bad credit history, you will also get fined for going over the limit. This isn’t just the end of your expense, as other fees would be asked from you. Some of the transactions you had done with your credit card (including buying a new gadget) would include transaction fees in them, the same way that service charge will be asked of you when you dine in expensive restaurants. Think of them as the cost of serving you in your transactions.

4. Rewards

Things to Know Before Applying for a Credit Card2

Charges aside, there are also good points in using a credit card. Some banks would provide reward points every time you use the said item to avail items or services. Of course, there is a catch in this type of reward system. Sometimes, you may have to use the credit card a certain number of times to acquire a single point. The bank initiated this rewards program to make sure that you use the card. No worries though, as long as you are within your limit, the possibility of attaining your reward is higher than gaining penalty due to overspending.

5. Interest rates

Remember when we said that using a credit card to avail items and services is like borrowing money from the bank? Each time you use your card, there is a certain interest that you’d have to pay for that “borrowed” money. Consider researching on the particular interest rates of a bank before applying for their credit card. If you’re going to pay that “borrowed” money in full every month, then the interest rate wouldn’t matter to you. However, if you plan to carry that certain “debt,” you may want to consider a lower interest rate, as they accumulate each particular time passes that you don’t pay your “debt.”

Things to Know Before Applying for a Credit Card3

With all that has been said, owning a credit card requires complete self-control and discipline in spending. If you wouldn’t want to have horror stories of your own, then be sure to pay for the charges of your transactions, and with great ease. Cebuana Lhuillier offers their Bills Payment services in their 1,800 branches nationwide. All transactions are online and are completed quickly and safely. Its current partners (such as Metrobank Credit Card) also include major telecommunication networks, insurance companies, online businesses, and schools. So what are you waiting for? Visit your nearest Cebuana Lhuillier branch now – we assure a fast, easy, and secure transaction.

10 Extra Income Ideas for When You’re Looking for a Job

So you left a job to pursue greener pastures, but haven’t quite figured out where those greener pastures are. In times like this, it (quite literally) pays to have a work-from-home job to tide you over while you’re searching. Some of it is easy, some of it not, and it’s pretty much a matter of knowing where your strengths lie and how well you play your cards! Check out these 10 ways to earn money while going through unemployment.

A short stint in food service can be a very humbling experience, and a lot of people from that industry have said that everyone should try it at least once, to build their character up. Interacting with hundreds of different people a day, each with their own set of demands, can tire anyone out – but while you’re there, pick up all the experience you can get.

1. Food Stall

Filipinos love food. A food stall is the easiest way to pick up some extra cash! If you have a special merienda treat – perhaps the best turon, an easy way to make ramen, or a snack that isn’t popular (yet!) in the Philippines – it’s time to fire up the stove, bring out the folding table and set up shop in a great place with good foot traffic. If the people like it, you’ll keep making cash as you watch your customers grow!

2. Graphic Design

If you’re a whiz at Photoshop or Illustrator, you’re in luck! Tons of people are looking for graphic designers for their graphic design needs. Make logos, posters, edit photos for a good fee and set yourself up with a portfolio. Who knows, with enough practice, you can charge a lot higher for your work!

3. Virtual assistant

Organizing schedules, setting up meetings, and making sure every second is accounted for is no easy task, and executives need someone to plan everything up for them. Being a virtual assistant not only keeps you busy, but also allows you to work even when you and your employer are thousands of miles away. Better still, most gigs offer monthly payments, so it’ll be a stable source of income for quite a while!

Try Googling online transcription services and see if you can set yourself up with a gig!

5. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based type of marketing, meaning you get money through marketing the product by yourself. What you do is you gain a supply of the product, and it is your job to sell them, and the company pays you a share of the profits, for your solo marketing efforts. Mostly, you also get incentives if you pull in another friend to do the job with you.

7. Online English tutorials

This job has become the bread and butter for many Filipinos working from home. With our good handle on the English language, and our hospitality, Filipinos are good choices for English tutors – and the scores of foreign clients that they get can only attest to that. All you need is a good pair of headphones, a clear mic, a laptop that can supportVOIP applications such as Skype, Viber, Yahoo! Messenger, or AOL, and a good internet connection to start teaching some English!

8. Arts and Crafts

If you’re into arts and crafts, there is a world of opportunity out there waiting for you. People are always looking for cute little accessories, phone charms, or maybe handmade giveaways for big events like weddings, debuts, and baptisms. 15 Filipino Superstitions About Money

We Filipinos always believe in superstitions. Some make sense, while most are just weird. But out of all the local superstitions, those that involve money are definitely the ones we usually practice. After all, we don’t like to lose any, right? With that, here are just some of the most commonly heard money superstitions of Filipinos.

1. Don’t sweep your floors at night. According to our elders, sweeping at night causes luck to go out the door as well, bringing wealth with it.

2. If you buy a new wallet, put a certain amount in it that you should never spend. Rumor has it that leaving a certain amount of money (regardless if it’s as low as P20) would dictate your luck of never running out of money for a year.

3. An itch on your palm means incoming wealth. Regardless if it’s an ant bite or just dirty hands, if your palms itch, expect money in the upcoming days.

4. If you mistakenly wear your clothes inside-out, expect more money. Similar with the superstition of getting lost, wearing your clothes the wrong way would attract good luck.

5. If you are a businessman, giving discount to your first customer of the day will increase that day’s sales. This belief is said to attract more customers and earnings within a single day.

6. Never put your bag or purse on the ground. This is said to cause bad luck in wealth, leaving the owner of the bag/purse with no money.

7. Never pay your debt at night. This is similar to the superstition of not sweeping your floor at night, as it also causes loss of income.

15-filipino-superstitions-about-money2
8. When you see a shooting star, quickly take your money (any amount) and wrap it in your handkerchief. The money you had wrapped should then be used for gambling. This would be a sure win for that particular game.

9. Wallet money should be arranged from lowest to highest. This is another superstition that is said to attract more wealth in the upcoming days.

10. Never pay on the first hour and day of the month. Similar to not paying your debt at night, this also causes bad luck when it comes to earnings.

11. When moving to a new house, throw coins inside first before entering. This is said to indicate showering the house with wealth, providing its inhabitants with many blessings.

12. Keep plants with round leaves, cut down those with vines. Round shapes are always believed to symbolize coins; vines however, take their gardeners with them to the ground.

13. Never put money on the table. Many believe that it will cause the family to spend all their money on food, with nothing left to spend on other important things.

14. Black ants are good luck. It is a belief from the Chinese that motivates many to leave sweets on certain parts of their houses to attract ants, and hopefully, money.

15-filipino-superstitions-about-money3

15. Use your right hand whenever you pay. This is a belief that indicates balance, as your left hand should be used to receive payment. Proper balance in using your hands attracts more money towards you.

Luck and superstitions aside, hard work would always be the best way in attracting wealth and blessings. Here at Cebuana Lhuillier, we offer Micro-Loan money lending to help you upstart your own business, putting your hard work and valuable time into good use. We create value to customers through a simple application process, easy terms, and less requirements, cutting long lines and long waiting time. So what are you waiting for? 10 Ways To Avoid Having A Bad Credit History

Your credit history is a record of your responsible repayment of debts. It is how banks decide if giving a loan to someone (let’s say, you) is a good credit risk or a bad one. It records all of your transactions, from banks, credit card companies, collection agencies, and governments. In short, it’s who you are as a buyer and debtor!

A person’s credit history usually matters when it comes to taking out loans – which Cebuana Lhuillier offers to everyone; from TODA operators, self-employed individuals, and small business owners! Most of all, you get your cash fast. Check out the different types of loans we have.

The way it works is all very simple: if you have a good credit history, they’ll give you better interest rates (additional fees put on top of what you owe the lender) on your loans (borrowing money from a bank), clear you for a new credit card, and approve your emergency loans as quick as possible. If not, you’ll suffer bad interest rates, landlords might deny you permission to rent a condo, and even getting a job can be a bit of a challenge.

Keeping your credit history in the green can be very simple, or very challenging; it all depends on how you discipline yourself. Avoid a life of debt by following these 10 ways to keep your credit history shining.

1. Build your credit history early.

The simple act of having a credit card, and not missing any payments, is a very easy way of building a good credit history. Banks are more likely to trust credit card holders with loans! When you have the chance, look up some banks that you might like and apply for a starter credit card – nothing too fancy, maybe one with a PhP10,000 limit to get you started!

2. Be consistent with your payments.

Your credit history improves over time, especially if you have a good track record spanning years without missing a single payment. The act of paying on time is one of the most noticeable contribution to your credit history. Keep it up, and you’ll keep yourself in the green side of your credit history for a very long time.

3. When you miss a payment, catch up.

There will be situations where you have to make the decision between paying off your loan, or choosing another, more crucial thing. Don’t fret! Usually, missing a payment won’t affect your credit score much if you pay within the next 30 days. Banks would chalk it up as an unintentional mistake, and your history remains intact. Beyond that though, you’re going to have a hard time catching up.

4. Keep your debt-to-credit ratio in the low thirties.

Credit experts in the US would tell you to keep that debt-to-credit ratio at 30% to avoid two things: 1) maxing out your credit limit, and 2) keeping your credit score safe. For example, you have a credit limit of P50,000. Keep your debt at around P15,000 to avoid hurting your credit score.

5. Keep ALL your bills paid, and on time.

Payment Due Date Circled In Red On A Calendar

It’s not just your credit card payments you have to look out for, but also for your utilities, phone bills, and more. Avoid getting reported to credit bureaus (such as TransUnion for the Philippines), which would hurt your credit score. Consistency is key!

6. Keep track of what you owe.

Having too many revolving debts can hurt your credit score, as it is hard to trust someone who is paying off too many debts. Applying for a loan at this stage can prove to be even worse for your financial condition In the long run.

7. Check your credit report often.

Even if you’re the most efficient and on-time payer of credit card dues ever, it’s hard to be sure. Check your credit report for every detail, down to the last purchase. Identity theft and credit card fraud are very real concerns, so you should watch out for any suspicious activity on your card, such as purchases you don’t remember getting. The sooner you address these anomalies, the better your credit score remains.

8. Having a long credit history helps.

Banks are likelier to trust those who have been credit holders for longer, as your credit score is reflected by experience over time. A nice, long credit history will mean to lenders that you are a good credit risk, able to pay and be consistent about it.

9. Apply for credit you actually need

Taking out several loans over a short span of time will make lenders suspicious, and may lead them to believe that your economic situation is in the red. For example, most banks would charge additional fees to people with too much existing debt, as they deem that the borrower is a big credit risk. It’s a matter of covering their bases. This is why you should take only what you need, one at a time, and complete your payments before even thinking about applying for a new one.

10. Educate yourself.

5 ways to Save Money when Traveling

Are you planning to go on a vacation? Wanting to get away from the stress of work? How about fulfilling your list of dream destinations across the globe? Yes, we all dream of having that perfect relaxation, regardless if it’s in the white sandy beaches of Boracay or among the snowy mountains of Canada. However, with every dream destination, there will always be expenses along the way, and most of the time, travel does not come cheap. We would have to spend thousands just to reach local vacation spots alone. But no worries, as we have listed the top 5 ways to save money when travelling.

1. Always plan ahead.

When planning to go on a vacation, it is always wise to consider all of your expenses. This doesn’t mean you would just list down the cost of transportation, as even the place you would have to stay in (commonly known as accommodations) during your vacation would also add to your expenses, and the more exclusive the room is, the higher its price. Go for an accommodation that is near your exact vacation spot to avoid further travel cost

2. Do your research.

While many vacation spots advertise the good points of their most-visited landmarks, you should not forget to do you own study of the place. Most vacation spots have their official websites, and these sites have sections where you can look for reviews about the place. Is it safe? What are the interesting activities to participate in? Are there any hidden charges to the accommodations? How good is the service?

3. Good timing equals great savings.

There are certain months within a year in which travel agencies would offer discounts and promos in their offered travel packages. Look for the ones which would fit your budget. This tip is connected with tip # 1 as well, since you would have to clarify hidden charges, and if their promo package already includes accommodations. Never hesitate to ask questions, as this is your budget we are talking about, after all. Some agencies even offer customizable packages, so you may really fit your budget to achieve a cost-effective travel.

4. Just pack what is necessary.

5 ways to Save Money when Traveling2

Sometimes, less is better. Airlines charge extra due to excess baggage and for each airport that you would have to go through; the accumulated extra charges may greatly affect your expenses. Just bring what you need. Going to a warm place? Bring your sun tan lotion and beach wears. Planning to freeze in a cooler climate? Pack your jacket and Christmas mug for those warm chocolate refills.

5. The more, the merrier.

Why would you choose to spend time alone when you can bring along your friends? Some agencies (similar to tip # 3) offer discounts when you travel in groups, accommodations included. Of course, this would enable more savings, meaning, you would still have extra cash to buy souvenirs for your loved ones back home. Believe us, they’ll greatly appreciate it.

So, you finally decide to go on that dream travel towards local favorites such as Boracay and Palawan, and you’re definitely enjoying every value of your vacation as every airway travel gives accumulated rewards. It seems airline companies aren’t the only ones offering reward points though, as Cebuana Lhuillier also has its 24k Rewards Program. It instantly grants clients with exclusive privileges, discounts, freebies, and special service offerings for every transaction they make at any branch nationwide. So for every local dream destination, Cebuana’s 1,800 branches are here to serve you. So what are you waiting for? Visit your nearest Cebuana Lhuillier branch now – we assure a fast, easy and secure transaction.

5 Things to Consider Before Applying for a Personal Loan

Personal loans are double-edged swords. It can help you get back on your feet after an emergency, square off some outstanding debt, get you through an unexpected financial situation or help set up capital for that business idea you’ve been working on.

Sadly, a lot of people would take out personal loans to buy frivolities and luxuries that they can do without, and they end up not paying them off, leading them to the first few steps to financial ruin. Taking on debt is a huge responsibility, because if mismanaged, debt can compound and grow before you even know what’s happening. Before taking out that personal loan, here are a few things you should consider:

1. Check out your credit score

To banks, your credit score is everything. They’d be more likely to clear a personal loan (with good interest rates, as well) if you have a good credit score; the opposite is true if your credit score is in the red. To avoid biting off more than you can chew, take a good look at your last credit report, square off any debts you have, if you can, and try to improve your credit score before you even apply for a personal loan. Trust us, it’s in your best interest to do this!

2. Look around

Not every lender is right for you. Find a lender that gives you flexibility with its payment terms, reasonable interest rates, and at a fee you will find manageable Cebuana Lhuillier’s microfinancing solutions might work for you, compared to other lenders and banks that charge very high interest rates, which might leave you with more debt. Make sure that the personal loan you take out is a loan that you see yourself paying off as soon as possible. Never bite off more than you can chew!

3. Consider the fees

A credit card sitting on a rusty old bear trap. Credit risk concept. Very high resolution 3D render.

Most loans would have other, less noticeable fees besides principle and interest rates, and every single peso adds up. Check every clause in the contract before signing, and weigh it out – will I be better off after taking out this loan, or will this really hurt me in the long run? Learn to weigh the risks and the benefits before you take out a loan to avoid inconveniences in the long run.

4. See if it’s affordable

If you’re taking out a loan, be sure that you can afford it. The longer it takes you to pay, the bigger the interest you incur. Before taking out a loan, figure out how to set up a monthly budget dedicated solely to paying off your loan. If it turns out to be a reasonable enough amount to pay off each month, and if you’re confident that you’ll be consistent about it, take it out. It helps to consider every angle of your loan to protect yourself.

5. Get all your documents in order

5 Things to Consider Before Applying For A Personal Loan3

Many borrowers have been denied, or charged with higher interest rates, just because they didn’t bring the complete documents needed by the lender to fully assess their financial background. Avoid this by taking everything with you: identification, credit card statements, billings, tax forms, deeds, titles, and other things that a lender might require you to bring. Save yourself the hassle of paying more by being prepared!

5 Spending Habits that Lead to Debt

It’s hard spending money. Sometimes, we get caught up in the moment and suddenly drop P3,000 on a nice sweater that you won’t get to wear, or P50,000 on a new laptop that you don’t really need, or maybe you buy round-trip tickets to a destination you’ve always wanted to see, but it wasn’t a seat sale. Impulse purchases on small and unneeded things build up to negative cash flow, and it usually is why you find yourself experiencing “petsa de peligro” 2 days after payday.

The YOLO mentality is real. It makes a lot of people impulsive, dropping cash on a lot of things that can wait, in pursuit of satisfying a need immediately. These spending habits can have a bad effect on your financial stability; before long, you might find yourself deep in debt. Read on and see if any of these 5 bad spending habits resonate with you!

1. You don’t have an emergency fund.

A lot of people, especially young ones, don’t realize the value of having an emergency fund. Financial experts recommend that you set aside at least half a years’ worth of monthly expenses as your emergency fund, to take care of things that may go wrong in the future. Make no mistake, having an emergency fund will be advantageous to your future (and can also work as show money for applying for visas!)

2. Using your credit card on everything.

A credit card makes a lot of people feel powerful. With one swipe, whatever you desire can be yours. Tomorrow be damned, you’ll cross that bridge when you get there. Sales all around, and you swipe to your heart’s content, even on items you don’t even need, like winter coats you’ll never get to use. What you don’t realize is that doing this gets you closer and closer to maxing out your credit card – an incident that will wreak havoc on your credit history. Be careful!

3. Spending to not be left out.

5 Spending Habits that Lead to Debt2

The new iPhone is out! Oh, is it #LaBoracay already? Let me get the tickets! My Instagram friend had a steak dinner at Blackbird – got to have it, too! Our fear of missing out preys on our spending habits. When you feel bad that you don’t have what others have, you spend money to get it as well, even if you don’t want it. Learn to exercise temperance. Double-check every purchase you’ll make, and ask yourself if it’s a good long-term investment, or another instant gratification episode.

4. Satisfaction now, regrets later

Credit cards make you feel the gratification, but pay for it later, in more ways than one. In many cases, this kind of thinking also leads to not paying your debts on time, leading to big overdue fees, or maybe even compounding with other debts. It’s going to be hard to pay it all off all at once, and it makes your credit history suffer. Try to keep careful track of your expenses and limit yourself to avoid being in this situation.

5. Borrowing to pay off debt

5 Spending Habits that Lead to Debt3

A lot of people think that the only way to pay off debt is by taking out another loan to pay for it. In many ways, that is so wrong. Not only is this counterproductive, it doesn’t help your credit score in the least, and it means you will be trapped in a cycle of debt, with interest rates climbing and climbing as you take out more loans to pay for other loans. Work off your loans one at a time to avoid this.

Pawning: Why not?

Sometimes we encounter situations that demand us to spend more than we’ve budgeted for. These may be due to emergencies or miscalculated business transactions. Whatever the reasons are, first, we must not be hard on ourselves for not being prepared enough to attend to these sudden needs.

While there are several creative options to come up with money, pawning an item is perhaps one of the easiest and fastest ways to generate cash. However there is still this stigma that pawning is an embarrassing way to generate money when times get rough. Here are some things to consider:

1. You have to tend to your needs and obligations

Yes, budgeting early on is necessary. But should you slip, just get back on track. For now, focus on attending to your responsibilities. Consider your timeline. When do you need the money? Pawning is fast and easy. For immediate needs, why not consider it? This way, you’ll save time and energy and you can shift your energies on other areas of your life as well.

2. Assess the risks and returns

Cebuana Lhuillier assures the highest appraisal and security for pawned items. If you wish to have your valuable possessions back, then selling it is definitely not an option. For every pawned item, Cebuana Lhuillier’s advance interest amounts Php4 for every Php100 loan amount. To maintain our standard of service, clients will be charged additional one percent (1%) of the principal loan, but not exceeding five pesos (Php5). No other hidden charges will be deducted from the loan.

3. Who cares what others think?

Filipinos get too conscious about what others might think about their activities. Don’t let yourself get caught up imagining others judging you. Know what you need to do. If you let others affect you all the time, otherwise, they will rule your life.

Key Qualities of a Trusted Pawnshop

Pawning items is easily one of the ways by which one can come up with cash. Surely, if you’ve chosen to pawn an item instead of selling it, it could mean that you’re not willing to give it up for sentimental or practical reasons. When it comes to money and valuable items, all of us want secure, honest, and reliable transactions. Of course, you would want to have your pawned item intact when it’s time to get it back. And since you’re trying to get the best value, a reasonable and fair appraisal process is what you should be looking for as well. How, then, can you gauge if you can trust a pawnshop?

  • Is it registered?

See if the business is registered properly. Visit their branches and scan for their permits and certificates. In the Philippines, these documents are required to be displayed.

  • Do a quick online research

Go online and see if there’s anything you can read about these pawnshops. Are there any news article read about them? What do people say about their services? A quick search can do wonders.

  • What do customers say?

Do you know friends who have been to these pawnshops? What can they say about them? Ask about how their interest rates and appraisal process. Find out if these pawnshops actually keep your item safe and secure.

  • How long have they been in the business?

The scale of a business can mean that people have trusted them long enough to support them. While there are many new businesses you can definitely trust, those who have stayed long enough can give an assurance that they won’t just disappear with your valuable pawned item.

  • Check their affiliations

You won’t choose to partner with someone you can’t trust or have fruitful transactions with, right? Check the pawnshop’s affiliations. What other businesses have partnered with these pawnshops? What are their other organizational efforts?

  • Have they been awarded for their services?

Services that merit legitimate awards are always a good sign. What have they been recognized for? What are these award-giving bodies? These are things you may easily find online.

Pawning is considered relatively less risky than selling because of the value you can get without having to completely give up your priced possessions. Cebuana Lhuillier understands this. As a service provider, we care about the needs of our clientele by providing easy, reliable, and honest services. What more can you ask for? Visit the branch nearest you. Pawning 101: Terminologies you Must be Familiar with Before Deciding to Pawn

When there’s a need for immediate cash, pawnshops are easily one of the few things people consider going to. The returns are fast and the process is easy, and unlike selling, pawning gives you a chance to get your item back once you’ve paid your loan. Before deciding to pawn an item, there are a few things you should familiarize yourself with in order to ensure a safe and rewarding transaction:

Collateral

Pawnshops usually have a list of things that they can accept in exchange for a loan. This is what we call a “collateral” or an item of value that you pledge in order to secure a loan. These are, basically, the pawned items. Pawnshops or pawnbrokers may accept gadgets and jewelry that may prove to have significant value for monetary exchange. In Cebuana Lhuillier, we accept gold, diamond, and platinum jewelry and watches, as well as selected non-jewelry items such as cellphones and laptop computers.

Appraisal

When an item—or a collateral—is presented to a pawnshop, it has to be assessed for its worth—this is a process called “appraisal”. Some items become more valuable over time, while others diminish in value. The higher the value of your item, it follows that you’ll also get a higher loan.

Interest

The interest is the amount of money that you pay at a particular rate on a regular basis given you have been lent. This may also apply and vary for delaying the repayment of your debt.  Pawnshops vary in their interest rates.

Cebuana Lhuillier assures the highest appraisal and security for pawned items. Advance interest will be charged Php4 for every Php100 loan amount. To maintain the excellent standard of service offered by Cebuana Lhuillier, clients will be charged additional one percent (1%) of the principal loan, but not exceeding five pesos (Php5).

Different Saving Techniques and What Works

source

You have your financial goals. Maybe you want to put up a business of your own in three months or perhaps you’ve been dreaming about purchasing your own house. Whatever these goals are, you’ll be required to set-aside some money for you to be able to reach them. There are many creative and practical ways to save. Here are some of them:

  • Know how much you can afford

Be honest with yourself: are you earning enough to have the capacity to actually pay for your expenses? This awareness can help guide you in controlling your spending.

  • Pay in Cash

It’s easier to monitor your expenses when you pay in cash instead of using a credit card. While it hurts to use cash more than credit sometimes, this practice can help you have a better judgment on whether or not you should actually spend.

  • Opt for second-hand items if possible

Not everything has to be acquired brand new. Search online if you can actually find pre-owned items that you need. These things may not be new cheaper value, but it doesn’t always mean that their quality has been compromised.

  • Re-think big purchases

Opt to wait at least a day or two before making costly purchases. Sometimes we get too carried away by our excitement that we become irrational when deciding to spend on something. Take time to decide whether or not an item has to be purchased in order to avoid unnecessary spending.

  • Put your money in the bank

It’s surprising that many Filipinos don’t have money in the bank. Cebuana Lhuillier offers Regular Service Deposit Accounts, which is a regular passbook-based savings account that can be withdrawn from anytime. This type of account earns an interest of 1% per annum. You may also consider Special Savings Deposits, a term deposit savings account that offers premium rates with flexible maturity period. This kind of deposit comes with a passbook for ease of record-keeping and monitoring of account transactions.

Saving up doesn’t have to be complicated. Have a clear vision of what you want and what you wish to achieve. Be patient with yourself and the time it might take for you to achieve your goals—it’ll all be worth your while and will soon prove to be rewarding!

Mid-Year Checkpoint? Are you Financially on Track?

It’s the middle of the year already. You must have planned on your financial goals when the year began—but can you honestly say that you’re still on track? Are you moving away or closer from reaching your goals?
It’s a good time to sit down on these goals and check your financial situation. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Check your budget

Did you craft a budget plan for the year? How good have you been in planning your expenses and savings? Are you meeting your targets for the year?

Reevaluate your budget plan and see if you need to adjust. Do you need to cut some of your expenses? Do you need to create more income?

  • Review your debts and loans

Did you borrow money from anyone? Or, have you been able to pay off your loans or credit card bills? Review these responsibilities and craft a plan on how to pay off all the money you owe if any.

  • Calculate your net worth

Your net worth is the total of your assets minus the total of your debts.  An asset is anything you own that has a monetary equivalent—this includes your money in the bank, the value of your car, and even your investments. On the other hand, your debts encompass everything you’ve borrowed. Do you have existing bank loans? Did you borrow money from someone? Calculate all these. Is your net worth negative or positive?

Whatever the results of your evaluation are, remember that there’s always room for improvement. If you find that you’re doing well, then why not explore how you can make your financial situation even better? Financial planning is all about having a clear vision and having the commitment to stick to your goals. Be creative about it. Good luck!

Finances for the Rainy Days: How to Always be Prepared

source

Financial planning is the process of identifying one’s needs, expenses, and savings. Identifying one’s needs, and not merely wants, is personal financial planning’s foundation. This will determine the amount of money you should be earning, spending, and saving.

We can’t be 100% sure of what will happen to us in the future. Planning is necessary so you can be financially prepared for your future. Sometimes unexpected things happen such as sudden need for home repairs or perhaps hospitalization. When these things arise, ideally, you should be prepared enough for the expenses these emergencies might incur. Here are some tips on how to be always ready:

Prioritize

Know your priorities. What are things that you can’t live without? What are things that you value? Identify these and learn to prioritize things that you have to consistently pay for. List down all the things that you have to pay for every month. Consider what you have to spend on daily, weekly, and monthly. Take it a step further: what do you wish to have in the future? What are goals you have to spend on? Know your short-term and long-term goals. Let these guide you.

Budget

Now that you know what your priorities and goals are, learn how to budget. Calculate the total amount of money that you earn each month. Find out how much you spend monthly. Are you making enough money to pay for all these? Or are you always running on credit? Do you have anything left for your savings?

Evaluate and Plan

Assessing your priorities, goals, and budget, create a concrete plan. If you figured that you don’t even have enough money for all your bills or you’re left with less than 25% of your monthly income for your savings, consider ways to increase your income. Perhaps you can take on an extra job? Or, maybe you can launch a business? Get creative. Also, see how much you should be saving up monthly in order to reach your short-terms and long-term financial goals in time.

Aim higher

Consider your options to create more income. Given your financial standing, how can you help yourself remain on track or even speed up the process in reaching your goals? Know that you have a lot of financial options like Cebuana Lhuillier’s micro-loan services. Cebuana Lhuillier has a network of 1,800 outlets and online presence give customers unlimited access and convenience in applying for a loan like “Lucky Loans” and “Happy Loans”. Visit the branch nearest you to find out more about these services.

These are just basic tips on financial planning. If you want to learn more, see if you can find financial literacy seminars near you. Remember: knowing what you need and having concrete goals are necessary for you to achieve your dreams. Stay on track and be committed. Good luck on your financial journey!

Cebuana’s Pawning Service, Items that are Accepted and How to Pawn

Cebuana Lhuillier leads in the pawning industry in the country today. Cebuana Lhuilier offers the highest appraisal rate in the industry in its more than 1,800 branches nationwide. The company’s business has evolved with the needs of the Filipino people by accepting an array of valuable items—from jewelry to gadgets—in exchange for a fair loan amount.

The concept of pawnshops has been around for thousands of years. Pawning is basically loaning people money in exchange for an item—a collateral—that a person asking for a loan may or may not get back in return. With Cebuana Lhuiller, the process is quite simple:

  1. Visit any Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnshop branch and present the item to be pawned.
  2. Accomplish the customer information sheet.
  3. Present a valid I.D. (see list below)
  4. Let the appraiser assess the value of your item. Advise the branch personnel if you agree with the appraised value and net proceeds.
  5. Sign the Prenda card and the pouch containing your item to ensure its authenticity and safety for when you get it back.
  6. Count the money received and secure the pawn ticket, which is required to be presented during renewal or redemption of the pawned item.

No other hidden charges will be deducted from the loan.

Our branches accept gold, diamond, and platinum jewelry and watches, as well as selected non-jewelry items such as cellphones and laptop computers. Remember: if you don’t repay the loan, Cebuana Lhuiller is entitled to keep your item.

Pawning is easy. Just present at least one (1) of the following as a valid form of identification:

  • Passport; including those issued by foreign governments
  • Driver’s License
  • Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) ID
  • National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearance
  • Police Clearance
  • Postal ID
  • Voter’s ID

To Pawn or to Sell? Pros and Cons of Pawning and Selling

Source

When the unexpected need to shell-out cash arises, pawning and selling are two options to consider. There are several things to take note of when deciding to either sell or pawn an item. One of the most striking differences between selling and pawning: you can get your cash without giving up your item of value completely.

When pawning, your item—say, a jewelry or gadget— serves as collateral in order to secure a loan. This is left with the pawnshop and you can easily have it back once you’re ready to repay your loan. In a sense, it is a process of “pahiraman” between you and the pawnshop.

Selling an item means basically giving up that item for cash. Ask yourself:

Do I want this item back? What does this mean to me? Can I live without this? How replaceable is this? If this item is highly irreplaceable to you, then consider pawning instead.

In making this decision, it’s relevant to consider the value of your item as well. For example, should you decide to pawn a piece of jewelry, say, a diamond ring, you can use this as collateral over and over again as long as you’re able to pay for your loans on time to get this item back. And remember: an item that increases in value over time also merits larger pawn loans.

Source

What also sets pawning apart is that you have no standing obligation to repay your loan since your item serves as collateral already! If you can’t pay for the item back on time, you can leave it as that. Also consider that a pawn loan is less risky for pawnshops—you can get more money from pawning than from selling with lesser risks from your end too.

Cebuana Lhuillier accepts gold, diamond, and platinum jewelry and watches, as well as selected non-jewelry items such as cellphones and laptop computers. We assure the highest appraisal and security for pawned items. Advance interest will be charged Php4 for every Php100 loan amount. To maintain the excellent standard of service offered by Cebuana Lhuillier, clients will be charged additional one percent (1%) of the principal loan, but not exceeding five pesos (Php5).

Cebuana Lhuillier Insures One Million Filipinos for NPPD; launches Cebuana Alerto app & MIAAPI

One million Filipinos officially joined the country’s rally to be a fully-insured nation as Cebuana Lhuillier—the Philippines’ leading microfinancial company—provides free microinsurance through its National Pilipino Protektado Day campaign. Helping Filipinos be more disaster-resilient and prepared against various calamities, Cebuana Lhuillier has declared July 21 as the National Pilipino Protektado Day as part of the company’s advocacy to build disaster-resilient communities and help the Insurance Commission achieve its vision of protecting 80% of the Filipinos with microinsurance by 2020. “For the past years, we’ve been constantly just introducing new and innovative products and services to the public to be able to help them be financially included. This time, with our National Pilipino Protektado Day campaign, we decided to take a bolder step and took the initiative to really touch ground with those who are most vulnerable to calamities and directly offer them free microinsurance as a new way for them to be secured,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said. In partnership with Pioneer Insurance and with the help of various public and private organizations, free microinsurance were given out across the Philippines, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities, families and individuals from the marginalized sector.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions General Manager Jonathan Batangan reiterates that National Pilipino Protektado Day is only one of the company’s many endeavors in its push for disaster resilience. “National Pilipino Protektado Day is a great milestone in our disaster preparedness campaign. But after insuring one million Filipinos, we are on to more initiatives that will help us promote microinsurance and foster disaster resiliency. We are introducing an app, a microinsurance organization, and later on, a website–all designed to ultimately promote the welfare of Filipinos,” he said.

Cebuana Alerto App

Reinforcing its disaster resilience advocacy further, Cebuana Lhuillier has also officially launched Cebuana Alerto during the culminating event. An android app that harnesses the digital mobile platform, Cebuana Alerto is designed to provide real-time vital information about disasters within the Philippines.

Equipped with an interactive technology that allows users to share updates in areas affected by any disaster, the Cebuana Alerto app features an alert system that sends notifications to the user in the event of disasters such as typhoon, earthquake, fire, and flood. It has live newsfeeds that show the latest updates from third-party government agencies including the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDDRMC) for weather updates, the Department of Education (DEPED) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for school suspension announcements, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for information on traffic and road conditions. It also informs the users about Cebuana Lhuillier’s various insurance products and services which they can also purchase immediately online through the app.

Furthermore, the app also includes a “Safe Button” special feature that will automatically notify and send an “I AM SAFE” SMS message to the intended recipient about the user’s current state during a disaster.

MIAAPI

Simultaneously, Cebuana Lhuillier also led the formation of the Microinsurance Agents Association of the Philippines, Incorporated (MIAAPI)—an organization founded to promote the interests and welfare of microinsurance agents nationwide.

MIAAPI interim Board Members include ASEAN Insurance Council Head Michael Rellosa, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) RFPA Asia Senior Adviser Dante Portula, Pioneer Insurance VP Geric Laude, Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines Past President Enrique Abellana, Philippine Insurers Club Treasurer Edgardo David, RBAP Coordinator Gay Mapano, Eternal Plans SAVP Jumer Lecetivo, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Executive Trustee Atty. Cesar Vidal, and CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan.

Moreover, Cebuana Lhuillier is also set to launch an online platform for insurance donations called OurHelp later this year. Connecting donees in the Philippines and donors from all over the world through a dedicated website, this crowdfunding website further aims to provide quality insurance protection awarded to the most vulnerable sectors in the form of premium donation from socially aware enterprises.

Prior to the culmination of the National Pilipino Protektado Day, Cebuana Lhuillier kicked off its disaster resilience advocacy by mounting and leading the highly-commended “2016 READY: The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster Resilient Communities” forum last January. A series of roadshows in key cities such as Baguio, Cebu, and Davao immediately followed to cascade the Forum’s learnings. Simultaneously, Cebuana Lhuillier launched during the road shows the Alagang Cebuana Plus Gold or ACP Gold—an improved version of the company’s premiere microinsurance product that already includes a microlife component underwritten by PhilamLife. ACP to date has covered more than six million Filipinos.

In a bid to make its loan products more accessible to the public, Cebuana Lhuillier Rural Bank (CLRB), a subsidiary of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies (PJLGC), sealed a partnership with Lendr—the country’s first 24/7 digital loans marketplace—last April 28 in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing event held in Makati City.

Through this partnership, CLRB branches will be able to expand the reach of its loan products and provide a more convenient, hassle-free loans application to their customers.

National Pilipino Protektado Day

Further strengthening its campaign to protect Filipinos from the onslaught of calamities and other unforeseen events, Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s largest microfinancial institution, launched the National Pilipino Protektado Day, an initiative that promises to provide more security to different communities in the Philippines. During the unveiling of the project on June 1 at the Fairmont Hotel Makati, the company, in partnership with Pioneer Insurance, announced that it will be giving away free microinsurance covers to one million Filipinos within the days leading up to July 21, the date hailed as the National Pilipino Protektado Day.

Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier, stated that the project is perfectly in line with the company’s mission of financial inclusion. “Through this campaign, Cebuana Lhuillier aims to make microinsurance part of disaster preparation for Filipinos since the Philippines is struck by multiple disasters every year. It is about time that we all come together to help those in need, especially during times of crisis. We at Cebuana Lhuillier have been pushing for financial inclusion and this is just one of the many ways that we believe would get us closer to that goal. Disasters wreak havoc to different communities in the country, resulting to loss of life and livelihood, so it is imperative that everyone is properly protected. More than having the usual emergency kits, obtaining microinsurance is another practical way to be prepared,” he said.

During his speech, Lhuillier acknowledged the value of relief operations conducted by government agencies and volunteer groups such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine Red Cross, Oxfam International, and Global Peace Foundation. He also announced that the first batch of microinsurance covers will be given to the said organizations’ constituents. The groups were also awarded with emergency relief kits, life vests and lifebuoys to be used in rescue and relief endeavors.

Meanwhile, the rest of the free microinsurance covers will be given out to various individuals, groups, and communities across the country.

Aside from its campaign to insure one million Filipinos, Cebuana Lhuillier also announced the launch of several other groundbreaking initiatives during the event; Cebuana Alerto, an Android app that harnesses the digital mobile platform to provide vital information in disaster preparedness, OurHelp, a website dedicated to donating microinsurance, and the institutionalization of Microinsurance Agents Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MIAAPI), an organization founded to promote the interests and welfare of microinsurance agents nationwide.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) General Manager Jonathan Batangan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to disaster resilience and enjoins Filipinos to be part of the cause. “National Pilipino Protektado Day and the rest of our initiatives are geared towards heightening microinsurance awareness especially for the low-income sector. Considering the severity and frequency of calamities in recent years, we believe that we are now facing the New Normal. Cebuana Lhuillier deems it necessary to emphasize disaster preparedness through microinsurance given the country’s vulnerability. To mitigate the impact of these disasters, we now have quality and affordable microinsurance products to protect the lives and livelihood of the Filipinos. We are proud to have covered more than 6 million Filipinos to date through microinsurance”, he said.

Cebuana Lhuillier has been actively campaigning for disaster preparedness since the beginning of the year. In January, the company mounted a disaster resilience forum with the support of the Insurance Commission and GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). Dubbed “2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities”, the event kick started the promotion of microinsurance as an effective disaster risk reduction tool. Since then, Cebuana Lhuillier has been cascading the key takeaways from the forum through road shows in major cities like Baguio, Cebu and Davao.

Cebuana Lhuillier strengthens Middle East presence

Aiming to better serve Filipinos within and outside the Philippines, Cebuana Lhuillier executives led by Cebuana Lhuillier Services Corporation Vice President Andre Lhuillier, recently headed to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to cultivate linkages with new and existing partners in the region for the company’s international remittance arm.

Enriching its portfolio of partners, a memorandum of agreement between Cebuana Lhuillier and Al Fardan Exchang–one of the largest exchange houses in UAE–was signed by Lhuillier and Osama Al Rahma, CEO of Al Fardan Exchange and President of Foreign Exchange and Remittance Group (FERG).

Highlighting the importance of the company’s strong network of partners, Lhuillier said, “I’m glad that we continue to expand our reach in the Middle East. These partnerships are tremendously valuable because they allow us at Cebuana Lhuillier to serve more Filipinos abroad and their families in the Philippines.”

For his part, Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, cited the huge presence of OFWs in the Middle East.

“We have a lot of overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, the very reason why we opened a marketing office in Dubai last year. Making our services available to more Filipinos is one of our ways to empower our clients and help them uplift their lives,“ he said.

Also present to meet with partners were CLSC General Manager Noel Cristal and Cebuana Lhuillier Chief Information Officer Ergilio Ong.

Aside from representatives of RAKBANK, Al Fuad, XpressMoney, and several other partners, the Cebuana Lhuillier team also met with MoneyGram global leaders Peter Osher and Grant lines, along with the money transfer company’s regional directors.

By establishing key partnerships in the Middle East, Cebuana Lhuillier wishes to make international money remittance between clients in the region and in the Philippines more convenient. There are as many as two million Filipinos currently based in the Middle East.

Recognizing the power of millennials in today’s workforce, Lhuillier discussed the generation’s contribution to society and stated that there is no single path to success. “What guarantees your success is if you are willing to go beyond what is required of you to reach your goals; and most importantly, if you love your job. Although skills and talent go hand in hand with a positive attitude towards work, hard work beats talent when talent isn’t working hard,” he said. Lhuillier, who has been supporting UMAK’s annual  IT Olympics, also stressed the importance of social media and how companies, including his own, are harnessing it to promote engagement.

Cebuana Lhuillier heightens disaster resilience campaign with launch of new insurance product

Cementing its commitment to help communities prepare for disasters, Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s leading microfinancial solutions provider, recently introduced the ACP Gold, an innovative addition to its line of insurance offerings.  An iteration of the company’s flagship insurance product, which is the Alagang Cebuana Plus, the ACP Gold offers an added microlife component while also providing coverage for accidental death/dismemberment & disability (ADD&D), fire cash assistance (FCA) and a rider benefit for unprovoked murder and assault (UMA).

Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuilier, stressed the relevance of the ACP Gold to Filipinos. “The Philippines frequently suffers from the effects of disasters, and while Filipinos are a strong people, many families and communities need all the help they can get to lessen the impact of calamities. The ACP Gold answers a need for a product that will help assist affected individuals bounce back from challenging times. It is a valuable tool that empowers Filipinos in times of crisis, especially natural disasters.”

The new product was launched during Cebuana Lhuillier’s series of road shows, which came after the success of its disaster resilience forum last January in Makati. The company, with the support of the Insurance Commission and GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), mounted “2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities” earlier this year to help Filipinos prepare for impending calamities and has since cascaded the learnings from the event to the rest of the Philippines through road shows in key cities across the country such as Baguio, Cebu and Davao.

During the road shows, Insurance Commission Microinsurance Division representatives Wilma Conde and Shayne Rose Bulos discussed the benefits of having insurance, especially in the Philippines, a country hit by numerous and varied calamities every year. Meanwhile, Jonathan Batangan, General Manager of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, presented the work that they at CLIS are doing to offer financial security to Filipinos. In 2015 alone, Cebuana Lhuillier insured 6 million Filipinos with the Alagang Cebuana Plus. With the recent introduction of the ACP Gold, the company hopes to provide more financial assistance to those in need, especially in times of crisis.

“I’m proud to say that we at Cebuana Lhuillier are putting in all the work that we can to help as many Filipinos as possible, especially those who belong to the most vulnerable sectors of the society. The launch of the ACP Gold marks another milestone in our journey towards financial inclusion and this is just one of the many meaningful projects that we have. We started the year with the Disaster Resilience Forum, followed by the road show and we still have more to offer in the coming months. In June, we will mount the Nationwide Pilipino Protektado Day where we will provide free insurance covers. Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions will also spearhead the creation of the Microinsurance Agents Association of the Philippines, Inc., an association of microinsurance individual intermediaries that will work towards the promotion of inclusive and responsible insurance. We intend to also launch the Alisto app which will further help people prepare for disasters,” said Mr. Batangan.

Cebuana Lhuillier has long been helping Filipinos uplift their lives through its innovative microfinancial services and CSR programs on education and sports development for the youth.

Stephan Lhuillier’s Pinoy Tennis Trainers

Tennis trainers seminar kicks off first leg in Alabang Country Club

The country’s first tennis trainers’ development organization has launched the first leg of its seminar series at the Alabang Country Club on April 18., 20, 22, and 23.

Spearheaded by Stephan Lhuillier, son of Philippine tennis patron Jean Henri Lhuillier, the Pinoy Tennis Trainers aims to improve the lives of tennis trainers through seminars and workshops.

“My vision is to improve the lives of tennis trainers all over the Philippines. I get to play with them regularly, so I see for myself their potential to step up and become coaches in their own right,” said the young Lhuillier.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Lhuillier formed the organization to provide free training to tennis trainers in order to boost their skill sets and enabled to become coaches. Targeting club tennis trainers, the program aims to provide new information and upgrade coaches and trainers to give them the confidence to provide better service to young kids.

“I see this program to be implemented nationwide, in the future. I believe a lot of trainers will benefit from this, and I want to help them achieve their dreams,” added the young Lhuillier.

Cebuana Lhuillier reinforces disaster resilience campaign through road shows

Bringing the important learnings gathered and discussed from the well-attended “2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities” held in Makati last January to the major cities across the Philippines, Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s leading microfinancial solutions provider and the main proponent of the advocacy, has officially started the disaster resilience road show in Baguio.

The first road show was held on April 8 at the Citylight Hotel in Baguio City where stakeholders from private and public sectors gathered to discuss key concepts about disaster preparedness and recovery. Supported by the Insurance Commission and GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), the program featured talks and presentations by Insurance Commission Microinsurance Division Representative Shayne Rose Bulos and by Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions General Manager Jonathan Batangan.

“During the forum in January, we talked about how important collaborative effort is to build a disaster-resilient nation. We’ve already forged partnerships with various organizations on the national level. This time, through these road shows, we hope to reach out to and tap the local organizations that are at the forefront whenever these disasters strike to ensure that we achieve our ultimate goal,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said.

During the event, Ms. Bulos discussed the benefits of having insurance, especially in the Philippines, a country hit by numerous and varied calamities every year. Meanwhile, Mr. Batangan presented the work that they at CLIS are doing to offer financial security to Filipinos. In 2015 alone, Cebuana Lhuillier insured 6 million Filipinos with its premiere insurance product, the Alagang Cebuana Plus. With the recent introduction of the ACP Gold, an iteration of the ACP with an added micro-life coverage, the company hopes to provide more financial assistance to those in need, especially in times of crisis. ACP Gold will be available in all Cebuana Lhuillier branches nationwide by May 1, 2016.

“I’m proud to say that we at Cebuana Lhuillier are constantly looking for ways to help Filipinos, especially those who belong to the most vulnerable sectors. This road show is just a facet of our disaster resilience campaign this 2016. We started the year with the Disaster Resilience Forum and we still have more to offer in the coming months. Batangan.

Aside from Baguio, the road show will also be brought to key cities such as Cebu and Davao as part of the company’s continuing effort to help prepare the public for disasters and champion microinsurance as one of the key tools to mitigate the impact of calamities in the lives of many Filipinos.

Cebuana Lhuillier has long been helping Filipinos uplift their lives through its innovative microfinancial services and CSR programs on education and sports development for the youth.

Cebuana Lhuillier donates building to Tacloban school

This school year, more than 800 students in Tacloban City will welcome the start of classes with a new and improved school building courtesy of Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s leading microfinancial solutions provider.

As part of its corporate social responsibility advocacy for education, Cebuana Lhuillier donated a two-storey, six-classroom, school building to the Northern Tacloban City National High School through the initiative of Cebuana Lhuillier’s President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier and through the efforts of its corporate social responsibility arm—the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc..

Four of the classrooms will host regular high school classes while one room will be dedicated to Cebuana Lhuillier’s Alternative Learning System Community Learning Center (ALS CLC) which provides educational opportunities to out-of-school youth and adult learners. The remaining room will be used as an activity area for the Five Empowering Fields of Knowledge namely Livelihood, Financial Literacy, Disaster Resiliency, Sports Development, and Information and Communication Technology Competitiveness.

“This specific project is deeply rooted on our goal of empowering our youth, giving them hope, honing their true potential, and investing in their future. Through this donation, we hope to provide not just affordable and quality education to hundreds of deserving Yolanda-survivor children but also to provide good school facilities and spark new interest in sports among them,” Lhuillier said.

The six classrooms will be donated equipped with appointments including new arm chairs, teacher’s tables with chairs, stacking cabinets, standing bookshelves, a desktop computer, a medicine cabinet, a first aid kit, a movable whiteboard, and disaster preparedness kits, among others.

Aside from addressing the shortage of quality classrooms and education opportunities in Tacloban City, Cebuana Lhuillier is also pushing sports, specifically tennis, to the youth by integrating a special module of Sports Development to Cebuana Lhuillier’s ALS CLCs. The donated classrooms are named after the six international tennis players of the International Premiere Tennis League team Philippine Mavericks (formerly Manila Mavericks)—Tsonga, Flipkens, Nestor, Moya, Huey, and Philippoussis—which Lhuillier manages and co-owns.

Ten Ways Technology Helps You at Having a Healthy Lifestyle

Advances in communication technology have made it more difficult to leave your work in the office. After all, your boss can reach you at any time on your smart phone! Fortunately, technology also provides ways to help improve your work/life balance.

1. It allows you to spend more time at home.

Technology allows you to telecommute and work from home, which means that you can save time on commuting that you can spend with your loved ones. You also don’t need to wake up as early, which provides you with a little more sleeping time.

2 . It allows mothers to earn income while staying at home with their children.

Technology provides stay-at-home mothers with a wide range of income opportunities, such as selling products through social media or working on a freelance basis for their former employers. Thus, mothers can balance income-generating activities with their parenting duties.

3. It provides more opportunities for workplace development.

Instead of spending time at the office training to learn new skills, you can study training modules on your tablet or listen to audio lessons. This not only allows you to learn at your own pace without the pressure to keep up with faster learners that you may experience during workshops with limited time frames, but also provides you with more personal time that you can spend with your family or doing leisure activities.

4. It allows you to be more flexible with your schedule.

Instead of being forced to work long hours at the office, you can take some work home with you. Of course, you also have to know how to unplug in order to maximize your personal time.

5. It helps you to stay fit.

Instead of having to go to the gym, there are apps that you can download on your smartphone that provide you with fitness programs that are easy to do and take only a short time to complete.

6. It makes it easier to stay connected with your loved ones.

While face-to-face interaction is still ideal, when this is not possible, texting and other forms of digital communication allow you to keep in touch even when you’re not physically together.

7. It allows you to learn while you’re commuting.

A commuter listens to Beats brand headphones while riding the subway in New York, May 29, 2014.

The US Census estimates that Americans spend an average of fifty minutes a day traveling to and from work. You can make good use of this time by listening to audio lessons that can help you upgrade your skills.

8. It helps make you more efficient.

If you have a million things to keep track of, apps and other productivity tools on your computer can remind you of deadlines as well as organizing your schedule so you can use your time more effectively.

9. It helps you avoid unnecessary meetings.

A lot of time during the workday may be wasted in face-to-face meetings with team members; you can avoid this by using collaborative tools that allow you to keep in touch with individual members so that you can stay on top of your projects without having to talk personally with them.

10. It helps you save time on chores.

Instead of going to the supermarket or grocery for routine trips, you can order what you need online and have it delivered straight to your home.

A lot of people believe that technology forces workers to struggle with maintaining their work-life balance. But technology can also provide workers with the flexibility to adjust their schedules without work having to intrude into their personal lives. It really depends on how you use technology and how you can ‘unplug’ yourself when you’re not working.

Seven Tips for Regaining Financial Control

These days, it is so easy to overspend, since credit cards are so readily available, and the convenience of online shopping encourages impulse buying. Thus, more and more people are living beyond their means and getting deeper into debt. Fortunately, with a little discipline, there are ways that you can get your finances under control.

1. Track your expenses.

In order for you to better understand where your money is going so you can control your spending, you should track your expenses. For at least the next week, or ideally a month, write down everything you’re spending. This inventory should include fixed expenses such as mortgage payments and rent, variable expenses such as food, entertainment and gas, and miscellaneous expenses like birthday gifts and car maintenance.

2. Create a budget.

Budgeting allows you to better control your spending by determining in advance how you will allocate your expenses. Depending on your requirements, you can make a detailed budget that covers all your expenses or a simpler one that includes only those problematic expense categories that you want to control.

3. Allocate your income using the envelope system.

This is a super-simple way to keep your spending under control. All you have to do is get a number of envelopes that you will label with a particular expense category, i.e. food, entertainment, and so on. When you get paid, draw all your money for the particular pay period from the ATM. Then put the amount that you intend to spend on a particular expense in the proper envelope. Once the money in the envelope is depleted, you can no longer spend on that particular expense until you can replenish it in the following pay period.

4. Create a debt payment plan.

create a debt payment plan

If you have balances on a number of credit cards, you should make a plan to pay them off. There are two ways you can do this: pay off the card with the highest interest rate first, then the one with the second highest and so on, or pay off the card with the lowest balance first, then the second lowest and so on, until you have paid off all your balances. When you eliminate a balance, use the money you would have spent for it towards paying off the other cards.

5. Look for ways you can reduce unnecessary expenses.

For example, instead of buying premium coffee at a coffee shop, brew your own coffee at home and take it with you in a travel mug. Brown bag your lunch instead of buying it from outside. Reduce the number of times you eat out in a month. Cancel subscriptions to products and services, such as magazines, that you are not really using.

6. Treat your savings as a bill.

To ensure that you are prioritizing savings, you should treat it as if it were a fixed expense, like your rent or your mortgage payments. When you’re paying off these expenses, also make sure to deposit the amount of money you’re allocating for savings into your bank account.

7. Establish a spending limit.

One of the simplest ways you can control your spending is to set a maximum amount that you will spend for the month or the fortnight, and then only transfer that amount into your checking account from your savings account. This makes it easier for you to control spending since you’ll know exactly how much is available to you.

Finally, make sure that you stick with whatever method you choose. Of course, controlling your finances will not be easy, but with time, effort and patience, you can do it!

Indicators That You’re Happy with Life at Work

Having a job is great. But, are you actually happy with your job?

Here’s the thing: when you’re happy with your work, it becomes easy for you to do your best, have some confidence, and feel that you’re in a good place in life. How do you know that you’re happy at work? Here are 10 indicators:

1. You feel appreciated.

More than anything, you’ll enjoy work when you know you are being appreciated. The best bosses are those who know how to thank their employees; those who don’t make them feel as if they’re just mere pawns, but are actually vital parts of the company.

2. You find it easy to communicate.

Another sign that you’re happy at work is that you can easily talk to your colleagues and bosses without feeling like you’re going to be judged, or that you may not be asking the right questions. When lines of communication are severed, it means that you’re in an unhealthy work environment—which also means that you’re probably not as happy as you should be.

3. You are not worrying about gossip.

There will always be tattletales around, but that does not mean you have to worry about them. If you’re happy where you are, and are content at work, chances are you won’t actually be worrying about office intrigues—because you feel secure.

4. You don’t find it hard to wake up.

Snooze button? What snooze button? When you’re happy at work, you wouldn’t mind waking up early—no matter how late you went to bed the previous night. This is because you’re itching to go to work again—and you are happy with what you’re doing, no matter how challenging it may be.

5. You feel like you’re learning something new each day.

A life that’s being well-lived is a life where you actually learn something new each day. When you feel like life is the same day in and day out, and that work is making it all the more monotonous, you’re probably just trying to survive—and not really live life.

6. You love your body.

There are cases where gaining, or sometimes, losing weight, is caused by a boring, and demanding job. When you’re happy with your work, you’d be eating on time, and food would not be a crutch for you.

7. You laugh a lot!

Yes, some people may say that laughter is not a gauge to happiness. But, chances are, if you’re happy with your work, you’d actually be laughing a lot—and the happiness will show on your face. It would be genuine, and not put-on.

8. You aren’t extremely sensitive.

People who are unhappy with work are usually hypersensitive. They don’t take criticism easily, and they often feel like they’re not good enough. When you’re happy with work, you see criticism as just that—criticism—and nothing more. You don’t dwell on it, and instead, use it as a way to grow.

9. You don’t feel like the company’s too big.

four_office_colleagues_eating_lunch_in_an_office_lv0253028

No matter how big the company is, when you feel like you and everyone else are actually part of the same family, it means that you’ll be happy because you can relate to each other—and that you have a good support system with you.

10. You actually have time for other things.

And of course, you know that work makes you happy when you have time for other things that you like—be it cooking, sports, your favorite shows, or movies, eating out, and of course, a social life!

If you can relate to these statements, it means you have a pretty good life at work. If not, well, maybe it’s high time to find a new job—so you can finally be happy the way you should be!

Nine Stress-Free Budgeting Tips for New Parents

Having a baby can be one of the most joyous events of your life. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most expensive, since all the costs of raising a baby can really add up. However, there are many things that you can do to save on expenses and make paying for your baby more affordable.

1. Prioritize your spending. Many parents feel that they need to have everything they will need for baby ready by the time he or she gets home. But it would be better for your budget if you prioritized immediate needs and put aside less urgent expenses. For example, instead of buying a crib, the baby can sleep in a bassinet or cradle in your room, and you can postpone your purchase for a few months.

2. Choose gear that you can convert as your child grows. For example, you can buy a crib that can convert into a baby bed or a stroller that changes to accommodate your baby as he grows into a toddler. If you plan on having more children, you can also choose strollers that convert to accommodate two or more babies. You can also buy clothes that are one size larger since your baby will quickly grow into them.

3. Buy baby products in gender-neutral colors. Instead of buying blue or pink items depending on the gender of your child, choose items that are green or yellow, for example. This will allow the gear to be passed on and used by future children.

4. Skip nursing-specific clothes. If you are breast-feeding your child, you don’t need to buy clothes that are specifically designed for nursing mothers. Instead, blouses that button in front and tank tops will do. Or you can simply cover up with a scarf when nursing your baby.

5. Buy items in bulk. This is a simple budgeting tip that new parents should adopt. For example, since you will be using a lot of diapers, there is no reason why you should not buy them in bulk quantities. In addition, you’ll be saving time and money since you won’t have to replenish these items as often.

6. Consider making your own baby food. Doing this can also be healthier for your baby. All you have to do is invest in a small food processor and you can be sure that your baby has a regular supply of fresh food made with fruits and vegetables.

7. Share products with your baby. You don’t need to buy products that are marketed as being for babies, such as detergents and body washes. Many of these items that are made for adults are actually also suitable for infants, as long as you make sure that they are free of ingredients that could irritate your little one as well as being gentle.

8. Look for online flash sales. Shopping online can help you save money and you can enjoy even bigger savings if you encounter online flash sales. In addition, you can also look for coupons for products that you commonly use that you can redeem online, or print out and take to a physical store.

9. Ask about tax deductions. In addition to the $4,000 deduction you can claim for each dependent child, there may be other tax exemptions that you can qualify for, such as the Child and Dependent Care Credit if you pay someone to take care of your child.

The best way to ensure that the costs of having a baby will not be ruinous to your finances is to prepare in advance. Before you give birth, estimate how much you will spend on baby costs so that you can plan in advance how you will deal with them.

Five Reasons Why You Should Value Work-Life Balance Over Cash Bonuses

An increasing number of workers are starting to recognize that success in their careers should not be measured by how much money they are earning, but how successfully they have achieved a work-life balance. According to the 2013 Defining Success survey conducted by global professional services company Accenture, the majority of respondents said that their top definition of career success is achieving work-life balance, ranking higher than money, autonomy and recognition. In fact, more than half of the respondents actually said that they refused a job simply because they were concerned with the negative impact it might have on their work-life balance.

Here are some reasons why achieving this balance is more important than a big paycheck.

1. Money does not buy happiness. Many people make a lot of sacrifices for a job that offers them a high salary. But is the sacrifice they are making worth the cost to their relationships and their personal life? In fact, as long as their basic needs are met and they feel part of a supportive community, many relatively poor people are actually happier than their more moneyed counterparts.

2. You live a healthier life. People in high-paying jobs usually have to work longer hours or have more responsibilities. This means that they have to spend more time at the office or doing work, at the expense of their personal life. Thus, while they are earning more, they are usually less fulfilled. There is also a big risk that they will burn out and end up not being as effective as they need to be in their work, which can affect their prospects for a promotion or for increased responsibilities.

3. You learn to appreciate what you have. People often dream of having a high-paying job because they think of all the things they can buy for their family if they have more money. But what would be the point of giving your loved ones all these possessions if you don’t have the time to spend with them? In fact, many children who grew up with parents who worked all the time at high paying jobs would later say that they would have preferred to have more time with them than to have a lot of expensive toys, clothes and other possessions.

4. It makes you work better. When you’re spending nearly all of your time at the office, with very little left for your personal life, there is a big risk that you will not have anything new you can bring to your work. If you have more time to pursue personal interests and learn new things, you can become more creative and bring a fresh perspective to your work. But if you are stuck in a rut, it is highly unlikely that you will come up with the new ideas that can keep you competitive in the workplace.

5. You will regret sacrificing your personal life for your work. At the end of your working life, when you’re finally forced to retire, you will not say to yourself, I wish I had spent more time at the office. Rather, you will regret that your personal ties with your friends and family are not as strong as they could be, because you were not able to spend time with them. Do you want to suffer from this regret?

While in today’s society it is important to have a good salary to meet all of our and our family’s needs, ultimately, money is not everything. To live a good life, it is essential to find that balance where we are fulfilled in our career and our personal lives.

10 Ways Millenials Can Achieve Work-Life Balance Using Today’s Technology

These days, it’s so easy to get stressed, especially for millenials who have so much to keep up with – both in terms of work and social life. It’s so easy to be overwhelmed, but luckily, technology can still work to their benefit.

That said, here are 10 ways that technology can help you achieve work-life balance.

1.Open Communication Lines

smartphones social media

When you’re so occupied with work, it’s hard to set up get-togethers with friends, or find time to go out with the family. But, through Facebook, Twitter, and Skype, it’s easy to ask your family and friends how they’re doing. You can set up group chats, and basically just talk to the people close to you—even while you’re away! Having a good support system creates a good work-life balance—and can keep you grounded at all times.

2.A Chance to Be Yourself

blogging

So many people get lost in the face of work that they forget to do the things they are passionate about, and to even reflect about their lives. Creating a blog can help you do just that, and more! You can set up a personal blog to talk about how your life is going, or one dedicated to reviewing books, of places where you have been, or dining places you have tried. At least, you’ll always have something to look forward to.

3.Easy Shopping

Today’s busy lifestyle can make you feel so tired that you’d rather sleep than go to the mall. However, with the help of online shopping sites such as Amazon, you can easily buy what you want or need with just a click of a button.

4.Playing Games

Color Switch, Candy Crush, Blossom Blast, Clash of Clans…these are just some of the games that millennials love to play these days. Having some games on your phone or tablet can easily lessen the stress you’re feeling—and help you escape your busy life even for just a short while.

5.Entertaining and Informative Articles

Another amazing thing about the internet is that you have sites like Buzzfeed, Bored Panda, and Listverse that contain easy-to-read articles about anything and everything under the sun. When you’re tired of typing and reading for work, you can always rely on these websites to take your mind away from your stressful work.

6.Catching Up on Your Hobbies

Some millenials feel great when they have people around them—even virtually—who like the same things they like. With the internet, you have Tumblr where you can easily express your love for movies, TV shows, and more by means of gifs, and writing about them. You can even write and read fanfiction—or follow your favorite celebrities, and talk to them via Twitter, too!

8.Catching Up on the News

Having a short attention span is common to millenials, but that does not mean they can no longer pay attention to whatever’s happening around them. With the help of Twitter, you get a concise collection of news—so you can easily know what’s going on even without clicking links.

9.Streaming Shows

5 Challenges to Reaching the Best Version of Yourself and How to Overcome Them

Here’s the thing: life is really not a bed of roses. The bigger your dreams are, the bigger the challenges you may have to hurdle; but that does not mean you should just give up on your dreams altogether.

Here are five possible challenges that can slow you down on your way to reaching your goals, and how you can overcome them:

1. The Perfectionist’s Standard

The problem with most people is that they want to do everything perfectly that they end up not doing anything at all—or end up failing just because they chose to stick to this standard they have in their heads.

What you have to keep in mind is that perfection is just in the mind. No one’s perfect—but that doesn’t mean that your best is not necessarily the best. You should remember that you can always change your decisions, and more often than not, you will have a chance to correct your mistakes. Taking small steps towards your goals would get you there—and having the perfectionist’s standard won’t.

2. Comparing Yourself to Others

Other people think they’re not good enough so they end up comparing themselves to the people around them. When this happens, they’d feel that everything they’re doing isn’t as good as what the people around them are doing—which often leads to lingering self-doubts, and insecurities in life.

Here’s a good question: why are you even comparing yourself to others? You have to realize that you are great the way you are—and that your goals are your own. Make a vision board and a mission statement. As long as you’re clear with what you want, you’re good. You don’t have to base your success on others’ success—everyone has their own place in this world.

3. Always Thinking about What Others Are Saying

Another problem that most people have is that they focus on the negative things people have been saying against them. These make them lose confidence, and feel like they could do nothing good in their lives.

Again, why would you care about what others have to say? People always have something to say. Even celebrities have haters! What’s important is that you focus on doing your best. Entertaining negativity would do you no good—and would just take chunks of your time away from you.

4. Not Having Patience and Drive

What separates successful people from failures is that they never give up. Some people want instant gratification. They want to be successful right away—but life really does not work that way.

No matter how many times you fail, you just have to keep in mind that if you want to get what you want, then you should not give up. Be persistent, and realize that if you’ll give up, you’ll get absolutely nothing.

5. Being Defined by What Happened to Them, and Where They Are

Finally, some people choose to be defined by where they are and what happened to them.

Sure, you may not be the richest person in the world—so what? Sure, you may have failed before, but so what? You don’t have to keep living in the past. If you want a good future, work hard in the present—and don’t give up!

Life is full of challenges, and that’s the truth—but remember, it’s your life and you can take control. Do that, and you’ll surely be successful!

If your house is near the school, you can opt not to stay in a dorm. However, if you feel like it would be better for you to stay in a dorm or a house near the school, make sure that you think of affordable ways of doing it. You can stay with trusted relatives or friends near school. Don’t stay alone in an apartment or condo unit—especially if you know you’ll have a hard time keeping up with the costs.

6. Bring your own baon—or eat at the canteen

Stretch Your Remittance Money with These Easy-to-Do Tips

If you have a relative living abroad, chances are, you’re also getting remittance money every once in a while. The thing with receiving money through remittance is that you kind of get tempted to spend it all since you’re not forced to place it in the bank. The problem is that if this is the case, there’s really a tendency that your relative’s money will just go to waste—sayang naman if that happens.

So, ano ang dapat gawin? Now that remittance money is in your hands, you can try these easy-to-do money saving tips below so that you’ll be able to stretch the remittance money and use it well.

  1. Have a “saving” mindset
Savings in Mind

Huwag puro gastos ang nasa isip. In order for you to save up, you have to have this “saving mindset” where you think about keeping some of the money you receive for future use—or for emergencies. It really all starts in the mind.

  1. Put the money in the bank

Next, open a savings account. In some banks, it could be as low as P250. Sure, it’s hard at first and you may feel like your money isn’t growing, but in time, you’ll see that you’re actually able to create a viable fund for yourself. A little always goes a long way.

  1. Live within your means
Shop what you need

Sure, you want to shop each day—but are you really capable of shopping every single day? Remember that the remittance money that you received came from hard work. You may not see it, but the person abroad really worked hard just to send you money—so make sure that you make most of it.

Do you really need to have coffee at Starbucks every day, if you can make your own coffee? Or, do you really need to buy a new pair of shoes—even if you have 5 useful pairs? If you know you cannot afford something, huwag na ipilit. Buy only what you need, then designate a shopping/grocery day each week, or each month if you can.

  1. Set financial goals
set your financial goals

No matter how young you are, it’s best if you can already create and keep track of your financial goals. You can start small. For example, your goal is to buy that P2000 bag that you need this month. Well, you could save a little each day. Say, P70. In a month, 70 will become P2100—which means you’ll finally be able to buy the bag. When that happens, you’ll feel even more fulfilled because you’ll realize that you exerted effort in saving that money! It’ll make you feel so much better!

  1. Create an expenditure list
expenses list

It’s not that hard. You can just put your list in one of your extra notebooks. Each day, make a list of what you have spent. It’s an easy way of seeing how much money you’re using—and when you see that you’re using too much, you could at least tell yourself to stop—or control your spending.

Keep these tips in mind, and surely, you’ll get to stretch that remittance money! Good Luck!

Consulate General of San Marino Produces Book for Orphans

Jean Henri Lhuillier, Consul General of the Republic of San Marino to the Philippines, and Anna Maria Delfin, General Manager of The Bookmark, Inc., with a copy of the book ‘Yehey, May Pamilya na Ring Mag-aaruga sa Akin!’.

The Consulate General of San Marino in the Philippines, in partnership with The Bookmark, Inc., has produced a book that will help orphans and adoptive parents prepare for the adoption process. On February 5, 2016 the two companies inked a memorandum of agreement that made official the publication and distribution of the book called ‘Yehey, May Pamilya na Ring Mag-aaruga sa Akin!’. Spearheading the project is Jean Henri Lhuillier, Consul General of San Marino to the Philippines.

“The consulate has always been involved in projects that benefit the less fortunate, especially the children. We have assisted in the adoption of many orphans who are now happily living with their respective families in San Marino. We came up with this book to make the process even better, by setting the right expectations of the children, as well as those of the adoptive family. We want all parties to be as prepared as possible and this book will help,” said Lhuillier.

The story book, written by Genaro Gojo Cruz and illustrated by Aaron Asis, features the story of a puppy in a rescue home. It was officially launched last February 24 at the Manila Polo Club and will be available nationwide for P130.

To make sure the book serves its purpose, the San Marino Consulate General gave out free copies through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Inter-Country Adoption Board, Museo Pambata, the Child Psychiatry Deparmentt of Medical City, and selected Alternative Learning System Centers.

Like the Consulate General of San Marino, The Bookmark, Inc. is also active in corporate social responsibility projects, providing support for organizations such as WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund).

Patrombon, Gonzales give PH 2-0 Davis Cup edge

Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team swept the opening singles against Kuwait after an emphatic win by Jeson Patrombon and a shocking, dramatic victory by Ruben Gonzales Friday night at Valle Verde Country Club.

Patrombon cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 2 player Abdulrahman Alawadhi to give the country a morale-boosting start in the tie. It all appeared that the Filipinos would end Day 1 with an easy sweep of the rubbers, until Kuwait’s 35-year-old top player Mohammad Ghareeb tried to make a fight and came back from two sets down.

But the visitor’s top gun cramped and gave up with the fifth set tied at 5-5 for Gonzales’ 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 1-6, 6-7 (8-6), 5-5 retired after a roller-coaster match that lasted four hours.

Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara will try to clinch the Asia/Oceania Group 1 tie in Saturday’s doubles against Ghareeb and Abdulhamin Mubarak at 6 p.m.
Team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier said Patrombon just showed that he deserves his place in the team.

“It is their time (Patrombon and Francis Casey Alcantara), it’s changing of the guards and they have to accept the task ahead,” said Lhuillier who is supporting the PH campaign along with Cebuana Lhuillier, Philippine Sports Commission and Yonex.

Gonzales trailed 4-1 in the fifth set when it all appeared that he lost it all. But the long day tolled on Ghareeb who hugged his coach at the sidelines and declared he could no longer go on.

Gonzales stormed to two sets to none lead in the second singles, but inexplicably lost traction allowing Ghareeb to come back into the game winning third easily after an early break.
The fourth set was on serve but saw the Kuwaiti getting stronger and stronger, acing his way to force the tiebreak.

The 30-year-old Gonzales trailed 3-6 in the tiebreak but gained back the momentum when he lobbed an winner and Ghareeb dumped twice, one wide and one to the net.

But things suddenly shifted when Gonzales hit an outbalanced overhead shot that fell short, before the 35-year-old warrior, who once lost a tight 7-6, 6-4 decision to Roger Federer, aced to forge the deciding fifth set.

Though he admitted feeling the jitters in the first points of the first set, Patrombon hardly showed it as he overwhelmed Abdulrahman Alawadhi to give the country a morale-boosting start.

“I felt that it’s not yet my top game, only 60 percent probably,” said the 22-year-old Patrombon in Filipino after the one hour, 30 minutes match that saw him setting the tone of the match with power and smarts.

Patrombon, who has been training in Chinese Taipei and just came from ITF Futures in China, wasn’t threatened in the match, facing break point only thrice: once in the first set, and twice in the second when he was way ahead in games.

“I saw that he’s not very comfortable with rallies so I was holding my attacks longer,” said Patrombon who indeed engaged Alawadhi in lengthy exchanges before exploding with crosscourt winners.

The Iligan-based Patrombon, former World juniors No. 9, also didn’t waste shots, tracking down the ball as though he’s trailing and firing highly charged forehands against an otherwise strong opponent.

“He is strong and I was expecting him to go all out,” added Patrombon who has won his fourth Davis Cup victory in three ties.

Still Lhuillier said it’s not over yet. “We have seen it a few times that we take 2-0 lead to lose, but Jeson’s win today set the tone for the Philippines.”

Lhuillier confident of Filipino Davis Cuppers’ chances

Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier expressed confidence with the chances of the new team facing Kuwait on March 4-6 at Valle Verde Country Club.

“I think we have assembled the strongest team in recent years.  It’s a great combination of experience and youth.  All of them have been campaigning actively and have been producing great results in recent international competitions the past months.  All players can both play singles and doubles which will make it hard for our opponent to prepare for us. I strongly believe we will emerge victorious in this upcoming match versus Kuwait.” said Lhuillier.

Lhuillier has very good reasons for his optimism.  The team is laden with so much talent composed of world number 35 doubles player Treat Huey, 2009 Australian Open Juniors doubles champion Francis Casey Alcantara, former world number 9 juniors player Jeson Patrombon and the highly dependable veteran Ruben Gonzales.

Huey is having a good start this year highlighted by his quarterfinals run in the Australian Open.  Alcantara went on a giant-killing run making it to the finals of the doubles of the ATP Challenger held in Manila last month.

Patrombon has gained valuable experience playing in several ITF Futures in Asia starting last year while Gonzales has been consistently producing good results in doubles while campaigning in US and Europe.

The team has also named a new non-playing captain in Karl Sta. Maria, a veteran coach in collegiate wars in the country, as part of its quest to break back into the elite Group 1 of the tough Asia/Oceania division.

Nowadays, more and more people are embracing disaster preparedness as a way to not only ensure their safety but also to help mitigate the effects of natural calamities such as typhoons, floods and earthquakes, on their homes, workplace and other properties.

Keeping the house secured before, during and after a calamity is of prime importance, most especially for some Filipinos who have made a living out of a home business such as a sari-sari store, Internet shop, bakery, or canteen.

To help these micro-entrepreneurs and their home-based business prepare for any eventuality, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions offers affordable micro-insurance products that will provide resources to help a business to get back on its feet after a tragedy.

The AllCare Alagang Cebuana Plus is a personal accident insurance coverage for only P25. It assures P20,000 accidental death, dismemberment and disablement coverage and P5,000 fire-cash assistance, valid for four months.

A Homecare Insurance can protect the business against damage to the home and other personal effects including furniture, fixtures, and fittings caused by fire, earthquake, typhoon or flood.

The Comprehensive General Liability Insurance provides coverage if the home-based business, its employees, products or services have caused bodily injury and property damage to a third party.

A Motor Car Insurance can provide comprehensive coverage for vehicles used to transport employees, products or equipment. This policy insures cars from damage, theft, excess third party liability (bodily injury and property damage) and Acts of God.

To further help micro entrepreneurs in their time of need, insurance claims can be filed and are paid out at any of Cebuana Lhuillier’s close to 2,000 branches nationwide. The company also has a claims processing facility backed up by Cebuana Lhuillier’s Pera Padala that allows Cebuana clients to receive their claims in cash in just 24 hours.

Philippine Tennis got another shot in the arm when the country hosted the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challenger Tour last month.

“Hosting the ATP Challenger was an opportunity that was too good to pass so I did everything possible to make it happen,” said Philippine Tennis Association Chairman Jean Henri Lhuillier.
“It’s definitely a big boost to Philippine tennis as it provided our players the opportunity to pit their skills against world-class players and see where they stand against the world’s best,” Lhuillier added.

Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara and Indonesian Christopher Rungkat finished second in the men’s doubles of the ATP Challenger Tour after they lost to Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Frederik Nielsen of Denmark in the finals.

“Alcantara’s finals run in the doubles shows that our players have what it takes to become world-beaters if given the right opportunities,” said Lhuillier.

Filipino ATP wildcard contenders reigning Philippine Columbian Association Open champion Alberto Lim Jr., former Australian Open juniors singles quarterfinalist Jeson Patrombon, and Davis Cup veteran Filipino-American Ruben Gonzales faltered in their respective first-round matches in singles.

“[We want them to] move back to Asia-Oceania Group 1 of the Davis Cup where I strongly believe we belong,” said Lhuillier who happens to be the team manager of the Philippine Davis Cup Team.
The Philippines is currently in Group II of Davis Cup Asia-Oceania.

They will face Kuwait in the first round of the tie on March 4 to 6 at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.

To popularize the sport, Lhuillier aims to improve the skills and rankings of Filipino netters.
“Continue improving the skills and rankings of our players as well as popularizing the sport among Filipinos and that’s the reason why I have been actively supporting big international tennis events such as IPTL thru Philippine Mavericks which I co-owned and managed, the recent ATP Challenger and International Tennis Federation Men’s Futures which I and my company Cebuana Lhuillier supported,” he stressed.

He wants to see Gonzales, Alcantara, Treat Huey, and Katharina Lehnert in international competitions and improve their rankings.

Lhuillier also underscored the need for a steady grassroots development program through the staging of age-group tournaments in different parts of the country.

“More than a sports avenue, Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group tennis also advocates the total human formation of young tennis players by helping them reach their tennis career dreams, be it to go professional or use it as a platform for University schooling. We aim to hone these talents to not just be champions in sports but also be champions in real life,” Lhuiller referring to his company’s Cebuana Lhuillier age group tilt.

Cebuana Lhuillier Microinsurance advocates for disaster resilience

Gearing up for the onslaught of possible disasters and calamities this 2016, Cebuana Lhuillier Microinsurance has pledged to bolster disaster resilience in the Philippines and promote disaster preparedness among Filipinos during the 2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities held on January 27, 2016 at Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

Stressing the importance of personal readiness and security to alleviate massive losses and damages during disasters, Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier urged attendees to understand their possible roles in disaster management.

“Calamities and disasters impact everyone, especially the poor and most vulnerable communities.

Everyone has a role to play in building Filipino communities’ resilience against disasters and calamities, and Cebuana Lhuillier Microinsurance believes everyone must be empowered to prepare themselves against these kinds of crises, thus, we decided to embark on this mission for our country and for our people,” he said.

Known for advocating education and sports development for the youth, Cebuana Lhuillier has long been helping Filipinos uplift their lives through its microfinancial solutions services and various CSR programs.

“This time, we would like to instigate a whole new advocacy that would benefit a larger number of Filipinos. Today, we are giving our full commitment to contribute to our country’s disaster resilience through the microinsurance products and services we offer in Cebuana Lhuillier and by actively promoting it for public awareness,” he added.

Collaborative Effort

During the forum, Lhuillier also encouraged multi-stakeholder partnerships and collaborations among organizations that share the same objective of building disaster-resilient communities.

“We recognize the importance of having a collaborative effort and support from relevant institutions to achieve the most impactful end result. Through this forum, we hope to open more doors for possible partnerships and encourage more organizations to join our mission—hand-in-hand,” he said.

Presented in three parts—Ready to Initiate, Ready to Collaborate, and Ready to Innovate—the disaster resilience forum is spearheaded by Cebuana Lhuillier in an attempt to emphasize the importance of preparedness and provide means on how Filipinos can rebuild their lives after such events.

Keynote speaker of the forum was Insurance Commission Hon. Emmanuel F. Dooc, while the other speakers were National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Civil Defense Administrator and Executive Director Undersecretary Alexander P. Pama; Department of Social Welfare and Development Disaster Response and Assistance Management Asst. Bureau Director Felino O. Castro V; Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation President Rene “Butch” Meily; ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Managing Director Susan Bautista-Afan; ASEAN Insurance Council Chairman Michael F. Rellosa; Project NOAH Executive Director Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay; and Habitat for Humanity Philippines Western Visayas Regional Head Retired Major General Carlos B. Holganza.

Microinsurance as Tool

Citing true stories of Typhoon Yolanda survivors who were able to bounce back after the disaster, the forum also highlighted the role of microinsurance as a key tool in disaster preparedness.

“We believe that microinsurance is one of the best existing tools to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. In the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, the microinsurance sector settled some P500 million claims involving more than a hundred thousand claimants,” Lhuillier said.

“We believe on the possible assistance that microinsurance can offer to policy holders post disasters. That is why, we have been continuing our efforts in reaching more communities, especially those in the far-flung areas and those that are most vulnerable to disasters, to educate them with the benefits of microinsurance and encourage them to be covered,” he added.

Through Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS), the insurance arm of Cebuana Lhuillier, the company has been taking trailblazing initiatives to foster microinsurance especially now that CLIS has obtained ISO Certification. With the support of its insurers, CLIS has already covered more than 5 million Filipinos and settled P140 million claims.

“So far, we have already deployed Microinsurance-on-wheels in different parts of the Philippines; developed the first microinsurance-dedicated app for Android phones called MicroPinoy;  forged important partnerships with various organizations to push for microinsurance even more; we have been creating innovative and tailor-fit microinsurance products for the specific needs of our countrymen—all these efforts directed towards increasing the number of microinsurance coverage among Filipinos that will ultimately help them prepare against disasters,” Lhuillier said.

Co-organized by the Insurance Commission (IC) and the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) Regulatory Framework Promotion of Pro-Poor Insurance Markets in Asia (GIZ-RFPI Asia), the forum coincides with the observance of January as Microinsurance Month.

Be on the Right Track: 7 Things You Need to Know about Personal Finance

have a saving for emergency

Handling money could be a tricky thing, so you have to make sure that you are aware of your personal finances. Otherwise, other people might take advantage of you.

There are 7 important things you need to know about Personal Finance—and you’ll find them all right here!

  1. Make sure that you earn more than you spend

earn more than you spend

Let’s put it this way: What do you think will happen if you spend more than what you earn? Easy—you won’t be able to balance your finances, and soon enough you will find yourself in a pool of debt—and that’s not really something you want to happen.

  1. Save early and it will turn into a habit

saving money early in piggy bank

As with most things in life, the earlier you start, the easier you adopt the habit. It’s the same with saving money

If you started saving money way back in grade school—even by just using a piggy bank—you’d apply the habit for most of your life. The money that you save could be used for emergency funds—which everyone really needs! You don’t have to save too much—just save a little each day and you’ll surely have enough money to get you through the rainy days!

  1. Be diverse

have a saving for emergency

This means that you shouldn’t put your money in one place alone. The thing about life is that you never really know what’s going to happen—and putting your money in a single place is a no-no because there’s also a tendency that you might lose them all at once.

Therefore, make sure that you put your money in at least two banks—and even in separate wallets, if you can!

  1. Protect yourself from phishing/scam artists

online scam

So many people end up being victimized by scam artists who ask for their credit card or bank account details online. You can protect yourself by making sure you change your PIN from time to time, and that you do not use the same passwords for all your email/online accounts. Always review bank statements, and don’t give credit card and extreme personal details to others unless absolutely necessary.

  1. Save up for the rainy days

saving money

The thing with people is that they are so scared of scenarios that put their lives in danger—but they really don’t do anything about it. Therefore, you have to make sure that you could get money somewhere when emergencies come up.

Invest in emergency insurance funds, disability insurance, health insurance, and even homeowners insurance if you can. What matters is you make sure that you won’t end up with nothing—especially during emergencies.

  1. Make use of automated savings

use bank to save money

Automated savings means that for each paycheck you receive, a part of it would automatically go to a savings account. This way, you won’t have a hard time putting the money on your own to the account—and you won’t be tempted to use it, too!

  1. Track your credit standing

trusted bank

This is all about how companies or lenders would trust you if ever you’d need help from them one day. This would also show you how you’ve been spending, and how much credit you can have. To check, you can try talking to your bank as they may have available data.

Be knowledgeable about personal finance and you’ll have a hassle-free, financially stable life!

CLIS goes to Sta. Cruz for ACP claims pay-out

Manila – A huge fire occurred in Quezon Boulevard, Sta. Cruz, Manila last December 4 leaving 196 families homeless, according to the barangay report.

Personnel from Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, led by Claims Supervisor Ramon Gonzalez, together with representatives from insurance partner Pioneer Insurance, rushed to the site in the evening of the same day to enlist possible Alagang Cebuana Plus insurance claimants and answer queries to facilitate prompt claims processing.

To date, five ACP Fire Cash Assistance claims have been paid out to the fire victims amounting to a total of Php80,000. In the future, CLIS aims to settle claims on-site as part of its initiative to further increase the trust and confidence of the insuring public in Cebuana Lhuillier.

Cebuana Lhuillier To Hold Disaster Resilience Forum

The Philippines is hit by calamities year in and year out. As a result, thousands of Filipinos suffer from the effects of such disasters, claiming the lives of individuals, rendering families homeless, and leaving a trail of devastation that takes years to restore.

In the hopes of alleviating the negative impact of these occurrences, a disaster resilience forum will be held this January 27 in Makati City. The event, called ‘2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities’, is being organized to help prepare Filipinos for imminent dangers and to spread information in order to  minimize, if not completely avoid, damages in the event of calamities. Highlighting the importance  of microinsurance in a vulnerable country such as the Philippines, the forum aims to help educate  and empower the public by presenting ways people can protect themselves and how they can take  part in getting their community equipped with the necessary tools, practices, and  knowledge to  become more disaster-resilient.

Leading the movement is Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, which has been actively offering  aid to distressed individuals and communities through relevant insurance products and services  as well as community outreach programs. At any given time, there are more than 6 million Filipinos  covered by the ISO-certified company through its rich portfolio of products.  Its premiere  microinsurance offering, the Alagang Cebuana Plus (ACP), made available in partnership with  Pioneer Insurance, has given otherwise uninsured individuals, especially the poor,  financial  security in times of need. ACP has settled more than P140 Million claims to date.

“It has been our commitment to answer to the call of the public in times of need, and this is one of  the best ways that Cebuana Lhuillier can come to the aid of Filipinos. Our countrymen are  constantly faced with challenges brought about by different calamities and, although we already  have that indomitable spirit that allows us to cope with such difficulties, we still need to equip  ourselves with practical knowledge and tools to lessen the impact of these events. That’s why we at  Cebuana Lhuillier are organizing this forum. We felt the need to work with different stakeholders  and increase awareness so we can all be prepared,” said Cebuana Lhuillier’s President and CEO,  Jean Henri Lhuillier,

Organized in the observance of January as Microinsurance Month,  the disaster resilience forum is  supported by The Insurance Commission, the government agency fully promoting microinsurance  under the Department of Finance, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit  or GIZ, which specializes in international development advocating pro-poor protection,  The event  is also made possible through partnerships with media outlets Philippine Daily Inquirer, Business  Mirror, and Insurance Philippines.

Touching on the Marikina Valley Fault and the country’s susceptibility to disasters, CLIS General  Manager, Jonathan Batangan, stressed the need for such event, saying, “This forum is very timely  as there have been talks about ‘the Big One’ and the occurrence of more severe and more frequent  natural disasters such as Typhoon Yolanda. We should have already learned our lessons and are  prepared for any eventuality, but the reality of it is, many communities are not yet equipped with  adequate knowledge especially on how to face these uncertainties. We hope that this forum will  provide a venue to exchange ideas to foster disaster resiliency and encourage individuals,  organizations and communities to be more pro-active in ensuring their security and protection in  these vulnerable times. With enough preparation, we can face the challenges ahead with more  hope and certainty.”

Vasselin named Philippine Mavericks MVP

MANILA, Philippines – Edouard Roger Vasselin was named the Philippine Mavericks’ MVP for the IPTL (International Premier Tennis League) second season by team manager and co-owner Jean Henri Lhuillier who cited the 32-year-old French veteran the other day for playing in all five legs.

The Mavs led the league in most players deployed with 11 this season. Vasselin joined icon Serena Williams, Category A Milos Raonic, Category B Richard Gasquet, Category C Ivo Karlovic and Ajla Tomljanovic, Category D Jarmila Gajdosova, uncategorized Somdev Devvarman, doubles player Treat Huey and legends Mark Philippoussis and James Blake in the rotation.

Second season champion Singapore and dethroned titlist India were bannered by 10 players each while the Japan Warriors brought in eight and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seven. Icons Kei Nishikori and Maria Sharapova of Japan, Roger Federer of UAE and Andy Murray of Singapore saw action in only one leg. Category A Stan Wawrinka of Singapore and Category B Gaels Monfils of India also played in one leg.

Federer performed in two of three matches in the Dubai leg. The former World No. 1 (now No. 3) Swiss was a disappointment as he lost in all his sets. Against the Philippines, he teamed with Marin Cilic to lose to Vasselin and Huey, 6-4 and against Singapore, he and Cilic bowed to Andy Murray and Marcelo Melo, 6-5. In singles, Federer was beaten by the Mavericks’ Karlovic, 6-4, and the Slammers’ Murray, 6-4. UAE lost to the Philippines, 26-24 and Singapore, 27-24 in the only ties where Federer played. He sat out the Royals’ third tie against Japan in Dubai.

Lhuillier said the Mavericks were hampered when Williams, Raonic and Gasquet withdrew after the first two legs in Kobe and Manila. That led to a disastrous showing in the third leg in New Delhi where the Philippines was trounced by the Aces, 30-12 and the Slammers, 30-22. Vasselin tried to hold the fort but couldn’t break into the win column as he lost to India’s Rafael Nadal, 6-4, and Singapore’s Nick Kyrgios, 6-5. In men’s doubles, Huey and Vasselin were defeated by India’s Nadal and Rohan Bopanna, 6-4 and Singapore’s Kyrgios and Melo, 6-5.

Lhuillier recruited Karlovic and Blake for the Dubai and Singapore legs to avert a tailspin to the bottom of the ladder. Vasselin, however, remained a mainstay on the court, playing mixed and men’s doubles in Dubai and Singapore and also singles against the Slammers’ Cilic. In the Kobe leg, he teamed with Gasquet to beat the Warriors’ Leander Paes and Pierre Hugues Herbert, 6-5 and the Slammers’ Dustin Brown and Melo, 6-4. In Manila, Vasselin and Gasquet tripped the Royals’ Tomas Berdych and Daniel Nestor, 6-3. In Dubai, Vasselin and Gajdosova defeated the Royals’ Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic, 6-5 and he and Huey drubbed the Royals’ Federer and Cilic, 6-5. In Singapore, he and Huey beat Japan’s Paes and Herbert, 6-5 and the Royals’ Cilic and Nestor, 6-4. Vasselin’s overall tally in individual set results through five legs was seven wins and 11 losses.

“I think Edouard was our MVP,” said Lhuillier. “He was with us in all five legs and played competitively in every set he played in mixed doubles, men’s doubles and singles. We leaned on Edouard when Milos and Richard left with back problems. And even when we brought in Ivo, we continued to play Edouard.”

Karlovic sat out the regular five sets in the Mavericks’ final tie against the Royals in Singapore then was called in to play Cilic in the super shootout to settle the outcome. The Philippines and UAE battled to a 23-all standoff after five sets. Karlovic edged Cilic, 10-9, in the super shootout as the Philippines ended the season on a winning note with a 24-23 squeaker over UAE.

“We won’t know which players will join us for the third season next year until after the draft in March,” said Lhuillier. “(IPTL founder) Mahesh (Bhupathi) will inform us which players are available during the draft. But I’d like Ivo to come back. He played well for us. In Dubai, Ivo upset Federer, 6-4. He’s got a booming serve and I think he’ll be a positive force for us in doubles play and could be a strong back-up in singles next season. Ivo will give us depth.”
Karlovic, 36, played for the Mavericks only in the last two legs in Dubai and Singapore. The 6-11 Croatian veteran’s serve was once timed at 251 kilometers per hour, a world record until overtaken by Australian Sam Groth’s 263 posted in 2012. Karlovic was ranked World No. 14 in 2008 and is now World No. 23 with career earnings of over $6.8 Million and six singles titles. In 2009, he made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Lhuillier said his choice as the IPTL second season MVP is Kyrgios. “Like Edoaurd, Kyrgios was the most consistent player on his team,” he said. Singapore won the championship by beating India in the final although the Slammers were second at the end of the eliminations. Against the Philippines, Kyrgios was unbeaten, repulsing Raonic, 6-4, in Kobe and Vasselin, 6-5, in New Delhi. Kyrgios, a Category C player, is ranked World No. 30. His mother Norlaila is Malaysian and father Giorgos is Greek. Kyrgios was born in Canberra and plays as an Australian.

Because the second season had five teams, IPTL organizers scheduled one franchise, UAE, in 12 matches and the others, 11. To even out the results, the Royals were allowed to scratch one match and they chose their 29-18 loss to the Mavericks in Manila. The Philippines, however, retained the points in the match. The Mavericks finished the season with a 6-5 record in matches and a win-loss rate of 48.1 percent for fourth place. The Royals had a 5-6 record in matches but took third place with a win-loss rate of 50 percent on 264 games won and lost.

Lhuillier pins hopes on big win over Japan

MANILA, Philippines – For Philippine Mavericks co-owner and team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier, the key to making it to the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) final lies in maximizing games won and minimizing games lost against Japan today and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) tomorrow in Singapore.

Lhuillier will sit on the Mavericks bench in the team’s last two ties. The Philippines got a break in the India match in Dubai last Tuesday when the Aces’ legend Fabrice Santoro called in sick and couldn’t bring in a replacement. India’s doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna, 35, played in Santoro’s place but his 6-0 win over the Mavericks’ James Blake was reversed. Bopanna wasn’t cleared by the IPTL to play as a legend since he’s still active in the pro circuit. The reversal turned what would’ve been a 30-17 win for India into a 24-23 squeaker.

At the moment, the Mavericks are in fourth place in the five-team standings with 214 games won and 221 lost for a winning rate of 49.2 percent. India remains on top with 257 games won and 209 lost for 55.2 percent while Singapore, buoyed by the arrival of icon Andy Murray, is second with 228 games won and 207 lost for 52.4 percent. UAE is third with 214 games won and 217 lost for 49.7 percent. In last place is Japan, the newest franchise, with 211 games won and 259 lost for 44.9 percent.

Assuming the Philippines sweeps the Warriors and Royals without dropping a single game, the Mavericks will end up with 274 games won and 221 lost for 55.3 percent.  Singapore has two matches left like the Philippines as the Slammers face UAE today and India tomorrow. The Mavericks’ hopes will also depend on how the Slammers fare against the Royals and Aces. From all indications, India is a cinch for one of two final berths with one tie remaining against Singapore. Spanish icon Rafael Nadal won’t return for the Aces in the last leg and Santoro is a doubtful participant but India may have enough cushion to advance to the final. Santoro may be available for the final on Sunday or the Aces could bring in a legend replacement.

Singapore has won its last four matches against the Philippines, Japan, UAE and India in that order to boost the Slammers’ chances to booking a final ticket. Murray’s arrival made a huge impact in Dubai. In the 27-16 win over India last Wednesday, Murray teamed with Marcelo Melo to thwart Ivan Dodig and Bernard Tomic, 6-4. And in the 27-24 decision over UAE the day before, Murray beat Roger Federer, 6-4, and combined with Melo to edge Federer and Marin Cilic, 6-5. World No. 4 Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland will take over from Murray for Singapore in the Slammers’ last two matches.

For the Mavericks, the goal is to swamp the Warriors and Royals. World No. 8 Kei Nishikori and World No. 4 Maria Sharapova have played only one tie for Japan and that was in Kobe. Without the two stars, the Warriors have relied on Philip Kohlschrieber, Pierre Hugues Herbert, Leander Paes, Thomas Enqvist, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and newly-signed Kirsten Flipkens to stay alive. Federer played only against Singapore and sat out the tie against Japan in Dubai. It’s not certain if Federer will play in Singapore.

Slammers’ star Nick Kyrgios said Singapore’s mindset is to stay in second place. “Stan (Wawrinka) is going to be the main guy for our team in Singapore,” he said. “Stan’s a terrific player and we are going to do everything to put a solid performance together. I think it’s not so much catching the Aces anymore, it’s more solidifying our position into a strong second place to get to the final.”

Lhuillier said the tie against Japan could determine the Mavericks’ fate. “Our first match is key against the Warriors,” he said. “We need all of the players to have big games. We need to start hot from the first game to gain confidence and momentum.”

Lhuillier said legend and playing coach Mark Philippoussis may be reactivated to see action against Japan. Philippoussis played for the Philippines in the first three legs but sat out the Dubai matches with knee issues. Lhuillier brought in Blake as Philippoussis’ replacement.

CLIS responds to Mandaluyong fire victims

Mandaluyong City – Cebuana Lhuillier is indeed a company with a heart as Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) immediately  visited and comforted the victims of a blaze that destroyed more than 2,000 houses in Barangay Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City last November 25 to 26. The blaze is considered to be the largest in the city’s history.

In coordination with Region 1 Manager Felix Contapay and Area Manager Gencor Embalzado,  the CLIS team, headed by General Manager Jonathan Batangan, visited Mandaluyong Gym, Fabella Elementary School Gym, and the Botanical Garden where most victims were temporarily relocated.  With the assistance of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, CLIS personnel were able to talk to the victims and offered assistance to process claims for Alagang Cebuana Plus  (ACP) obtained though the nearby Cebuana Lhuillier branches and through the 4Ps conditional cash transfer program of DSWD.  There were approximately 100 claimants who were enlisted, most of whom were Pera Padala remittance clients. “The time for CLIS and its modest achievements to be just  heard is over. We’d like to be seen now right where CLIS is needed most. This way we increase the trust and confidence not only of our clients but the insuring public in general to Cebuana Lhuillier”, said Batangan.

ACP, the premiere microinsurance product of Cebuana Lhuillier that were availed by the fire victims, covers Php25,000 Personal Accident Insurance and Php5,000 Fire Cash Assistance per certificate. CLIS,  as the country’s dominant microinsurance player, has now covered more than 5 million Filipinos and settled P140 Million claims.

How to Save Money if You’re a First Time Employee

Congratulations, you are now earning your own money! BUT, before you rush to spend it on all your heart’s desires, think about where you want your hard-earned money to go.

There are far too many sad stories of Pinoys giving in to their impulses that they end up with nothing after all their hard work. While it is okay to treat yourself every now and then (it is your own money, after all), it is always best to save some of it. Here are the steps that will help you start building your wealth, even as a first time employee:

Step 1: Determine the exact amount that you are earning

determine your earning

For instance, a 10,000 to 15,000-peso monthly compensation might look amazing, but in truth, there will be several deductions, including taxes, Pag-Ibig, SSS, and Philhealth. Your net income is what is left for your saving and spending power.

Step 2: Decide how to divide your money and where you want each allocation to go

monthly budget

Even after the deductions, you might still think your net income looks substantial enough to let you afford a postpaid cellphone plan, but the truth is that there are more expenses to worry about.

First, calculate your basic monthly living expenses (rent, utility bills, transportation costs, food expenses) and deduct that from your net income. The remaining amount is your residual income and it is what you have left for savings and for your wants. The amount of each category depends on you.

Step 3: Pay off all of your debts first

If you have any debts, such as student loans, credit card bills, or money you owe to people from whom you borrowed when you were still unemployed, you need to pay them off ASAP, especially when there is interest involved. Aim to channel 80 percent of your residual income on paying off debts.

Step 4: Build an emergency fund

emergency fund

Once your money is out of the red (meaning “wala nang utang”), you can start building an emergency fund in a bank account. An emergency fund is the money you will use only when you lose your job or when you need to pay for medical expenses not covered by your company’s insurance.
It is recommended that you do not use a savings account with ATM access because the temptation to withdraw will be too strong. Look for small-time but reliable savings banks that offer passbook accounts with a lower maintaining balance, such as City Savings Bank or BPI family Bank.

Step 5: Consider life insurance

Life insurance is essential for those who have dependents, because if something happens to you, the company will provide a premium amount to support your family. Make sure to find an insurance agent from a company you can trust. Take note that life insurance is not a savings account for your retirement.

Step 6: Open an investment fund

mutual fund

Savings accounts in banks will not let your money grow substantially; in fact, you may end up losing money because the interest you gain is not enough to catch up with inflation. As soon as you have reached your emergency fund goal, you should start putting money into an investment vehicle. Have your risk tolerance assessed by an insurance agent and then research on the fund that he or she will recommend to you.

Follow these tips and you will not be sorry when the time of your retirement comes, or when an emergency strikes. Good luck!

The Pinoy Comfort Food Essentials: Filling the Tummy and Warming the Heart

A Filipino family’s kitchen is a source of identity and nostalgia. Food is an important part of Pinoy culture. The sight of melting butter, the aroma of baking bread, and the taste of a particular condiment can bring back happy memories and make you feel at home.

Filipino cuisine is popular all over the world because of its rich history and diverse flavor (“iba’t ibang lasa”). It boasts of the most interesting, unique, and heartwarming comfort foods. Check out this list to see how many you have yet to try!

Sinigang

Imagine it is a cold, rainy, and gloomy day outside – and you are feeling lonely. Now think of a warm bowl of soup made up of *gabi *(taro), sitaw, and fall-off-the-bone pork. Don’t you feel better already? Sinigang is known for its sour flavor and versatility. Several souring agents (“pampaasim”) can be used: *sampalok *(tamarind), tomatoes, and green mango are a few examples.

The meat can also be replaced with shrimp, fish, or beef. The dish is popular because it is simple, easy to prepare, and very comforting.

Halo-halo

halo halo special

True to its name, halo-halo is simply a delicious mix of sweetened bananas, red beans, garbanzos, jackfruit (“langka”), leche flan, macapuno (coconut sport), sugar palm fruit (“kaong”), ube, and evaporated milk all poured and mixed into thick scoops of shaved ice. For those who really love sweet food, the already cold and sweet refreshment is topped with ice cream.

While its coolness makes it extremely popular during the summer months, halo-halo is considered a nice treat any day of the year.

Tibok-tibok

tibok tibok

This Kapampangan pudding is made with carabao milk, giving it a smooth, white texture. It has a gelatinous consistency (“mala-gulaman”). The carabao milk gives it a slightly salty taste, but overall, the pudding is very sweet. It is traditionally topped with *latik*, which is made of coconut milk that comes from the coconut fruit’s grated meat.

Tibok-tibok has very strong flavors, so small servings will satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth!

Karekare

kare kare

Ah, yes, you are not a Filipino if you do not know karekare! The combination of ingredients may seem different from those unfamiliar with the nature of Filipino cuisine, but a good and complete mouthful will erase any doubts. The dish is essentially an annatto-dyed (“atsuete-dyed”) stew of peanut-based sauce, oxtail (sometimes other innards are used), eggplant, string beans (known locally as Baguio beans), and other greens.

Karekare is eaten with steamed rice, with *bagoong*, a paste-like concoction made of fermented fish/shrimp and salt, as a condiment (“sawsawan”). The sauce is very thick and flavorful, giving the dish its reputation as comfort food that brings back memories of childhood and home-cooked meals.

Champorado

Some people like it hot, and some like it cold. Champorado is a chocolate-based rice porridge that is typically served either as a breakfast food or *merienda* (a light, afternoon meal). *Dilis, *or toasted anchovy, or buttered *pan de sal* usually accompany the dish, the salty flavors, enhancing the sweetness of the chocolate.

Champorado is a local favorite among children and adults alike. It is topped or mixed with evaporated milk and an excited smile!

These are only a few local treats that never fail to comfort the unhappy and upset. Cravings are stronger when feeling sad, and nothing beats the blues like choice meals, desserts, and snacks from Filipino cuisine!

How Pinoy Households Can Save More through Proper Budgeting

Does it feel like your hard earned money just slips through your hands during payday? Do you feel like you’re not earning enough no matter how hard you work? It is sad to say that many Filipinos feel this way. However, the good news is that there is a simple solution to help you save more and prepare for the future.

The Magic of Budgeting

money budgeting

Everyone knows what a budget is. Even the old man selling balut at night knows what it is and what it is for. It’s a pretty common concept yet, unfortunately, only a few Filipinos apply it in their lives. You can ask your friends or coworkers if they use a budget. You can also ask them if they stick to it – meaning they strictly observe their budgets. Prepare to be disappointed when you find out that not many use or even have a budget.

No matter how simple it may sound, making a budget and being strict about it will provide many life changing benefits. For one thing, it will help you find out where your money went. It will also be an eye opener showing you what your real priorities are. Finally, making a budget will help you save money.

Benefits of Proper Budgeting

beneftis of budget

Proper budgeting can actually benefit Pinoy households in many ways, other than the ways that we have already mentioned above. Let’s go over a few more of them:

*Practice self-control*: Making a budget will help you practice self-control. You will be making a list of items you need to spend on and opposite that will be the amount you have allocated for each item. Anything that is not in the list will not be considered – no matter how much your son or daughter begs for that new cellphone.

*You can provide funds for the neglected aspects of your life*: When was the last time your wife had money to go to the parlor to make herself look pretty? When was daddy able to have a really good haircut? When did you last have enough money to go to the dentist? Proper budgeting will help you allocate and save money for some of the things you may have neglected because you focus on work too much.

*A budget will help you identify your needs from your wants*: When you outline a budget, you will have to identify your needs and wants. Your list of needs represent your necessities – things that you can never live without, just like your water bill, electricity bill, food, etc.

Your list of wants represents items that aren’t that necessary but you will want to spend money on anyway, if you can. You can still live a happy life without the latest Samsung phone in the market, right? You will spend money first on your needs list, and only when that list has been covered will you spend money on your wants list.

*Budgeting for the unexpected*: Having a budget will help you set aside money for unexpected expenses like a child getting sick, an accident, or any incident you were not expecting. This part of your budget is called the “emergency fund.” It’s a little amount that you hold on to and never spend unless absolutely necessary.

You start with a small amount, and then next payday you add to it. Any excess funds you save during this payday will also go into that emergency fund. Your emergency fund will be a big source of comfort when an actual emergency comes around – at least you won’t have to borrow money from anyone just to pay for hospital bills, etc.

*Plan for future needs*: You will eventually retire from work but you will still need money. Most people rely on their kids when they’re elderly. However, if you have been following a budget your whole life, you should have some savings that you can use when you’re retired.

Preparing for Rainy Days

A budget is simply a tool that will be useful to you if you live by it. It will eventually teach Filipino households some financial discipline. By strictly adhering to it, Filipinos will only be helping themselves by saving more money for present and future needs through proper budgeting.
