Bound by a common vision to improve the risk protection of low income Filipino families, leading microinsurance agency Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) and the German government’s Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit – Microinsurance Innovations Program for Social Security (GIZ-MIPSS) have signed a pact to enhance the financial literacy on microinsurance of the low income sector in the Philippines.
Together, CLIS and GIZ-MIPSS are strategically poised to use the network of Cebuana Lhuillier pawnshops across the country to promote financial literacy as a strategy for behavior change conducive to microinsurance. The joint campaign aims to form microinsurance advocates across the CLIS network, who will then advocate for microinsurance with its existing and potential clients. This ripple strategy is in line with the objectives of the Philippine government’s national Roadmap to Financial Literacy on Microinsurance. This project aims to institutionalize financial literacy as a strategy in enhancing the awareness and access of the low income sector to insurance products and services. The roadmap was endorsed by the Philippine government in February 2011 and is founded in the enabling policies of the National Strategy for Microinsurance and the Regulatory Framework for Microinsurance.
Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnshop has been the leading pawnshop chain in the Philippines with over 1,500 branches across the country—from Aparri to Tawi-Tawi. For 25 years now, Cebuana has been true to its slogan “Walang Kapantay Magpahalaga” through the incomparable services that the company offers to its customers- this includes — pawning, local and international remittance, insurance, bills payment, e-load, collection, and foreign exchange. Founded in 1987 by the current Philippine envoy to Portugal, Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier is currently managed by its President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier.
