CLRB inks partnership with Lendr

(From L-R) PLDT Executive Vice President and ePLDT President and CEO Eric Alberto, Voyager Innovations President and CEO Orlando Vea, PLDT and Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel Pangilinan, Cebuana Lhuillier Bank President Leo Escaño, Cebuana Lhuillier Rural Bank Loans Manager Margarita Lee, and FINTQ Managing Director Lito Villanueva

In a bid to make its loan products more accessible to the public, Cebuana Lhuillier Rural Bank (CLRB), a subsidiary of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies (PJLGC), sealed a partnership with Lendr—the country’s first 24/7 digital loans marketplace—last April 28 in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing event held in Makati City.

Through this partnership, CLRB branches will be able to expand the reach of its loan products and provide a more convenient, hassle-free loans application to their customers.

For its initial run, CLRB’s Employee Salary Loan product will be made accessible on Lendr. Pre-qualified employees of the PJLCG will be able to apply and get approval for their ESL using mobile phone via the Lendr Application.

“Aside from giving convenience to our customers, the partnership with Lendr also contributes to the overall goal of Cebuana Lhuillier as a company, which is financial inclusion. Hopefully, by making our loans available online, more people will have access to financial solutions that they need,” CLRB President Leo Escaño said.

Key features of Lendr include online tracking of loan application and monitoring of loan payments and balances.

With the addition of CLRB, Lendr has now a total of 25 banks and financial institution partners. Other partners include some of the Philippines’ most trusted companies such as China Bank Savings and PNB Savings Bank.

National Pilipino Protektado Day

Further strengthening its campaign to protect Filipinos from the onslaught of calamities and other unforeseen events, Cebuana Lhuillier, the country’s largest microfinancial institution, launched the National Pilipino Protektado Day, an initiative that promises to provide more security to different communities in the Philippines. During the unveiling of the project on June 1 at the Fairmont Hotel Makati, the company, in partnership with Pioneer Insurance, announced that it will be giving away free microinsurance covers to one million Filipinos within the days leading up to July 21, the date hailed as the National Pilipino Protektado Day.

Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier, stated that the project is perfectly in line with the company’s mission of financial inclusion. “Through this campaign, Cebuana Lhuillier aims to make microinsurance part of disaster preparation for Filipinos since the Philippines is struck by multiple disasters every year. It is about time that we all come together to help those in need, especially during times of crisis. We at Cebuana Lhuillier have been pushing for financial inclusion and this is just one of the many ways that we believe would get us closer to that goal. Disasters wreak havoc to different communities in the country, resulting to loss of life and livelihood, so it is imperative that everyone is properly protected. More than having the usual emergency kits, obtaining microinsurance is another practical way to be prepared,” he said.

During his speech, Lhuillier acknowledged the value of relief operations conducted by government agencies and volunteer groups such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine Red Cross, Oxfam International, and Global Peace Foundation. He also announced that the first batch of microinsurance covers will be given to the said organizations’ constituents. The groups were also awarded with emergency relief kits, life vests and lifebuoys to be used in rescue and relief endeavors.

Meanwhile, the rest of the free microinsurance covers will be given out to various individuals, groups, and communities across the country.

Aside from its campaign to insure one million Filipinos, Cebuana Lhuillier also announced the launch of several other groundbreaking initiatives during the event; Cebuana Alerto, an Android app that harnesses the digital mobile platform to provide vital information in disaster preparedness, OurHelp, a website dedicated to donating microinsurance, and the institutionalization of Microinsurance Agents Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MIAAPI), an organization founded to promote the interests and welfare of microinsurance agents nationwide.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) General Manager Jonathan Batangan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to disaster resilience and enjoins Filipinos to be part of the cause. “National Pilipino Protektado Day and the rest of our initiatives are geared towards heightening microinsurance awareness especially for the low-income sector. Considering the severity and frequency of calamities in recent years, we believe that we are now facing the New Normal. Cebuana Lhuillier deems it necessary to emphasize disaster preparedness through microinsurance given the country’s vulnerability. To mitigate the impact of these disasters, we now have quality and affordable microinsurance products to protect the lives and livelihood of the Filipinos. We are proud to have covered more than 6 million Filipinos to date through microinsurance”, he said.

Cebuana Lhuillier has been actively campaigning for disaster preparedness since the beginning of the year. In January, the company mounted a disaster resilience forum with the support of the Insurance Commission and GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). Dubbed “2016 Ready: Disaster Resilience Forum – The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster-Resilient Communities”, the event kick started the promotion of microinsurance as an effective disaster risk reduction tool. Since then, Cebuana Lhuillier has been cascading the key takeaways from the forum through road shows in major cities like Baguio, Cebu and Davao.

Cebuana Lhuillier strengthens Middle East presence

Aiming to better serve Filipinos within and outside the Philippines, Cebuana Lhuillier executives led by Cebuana Lhuillier Services Corporation Vice President Andre Lhuillier, recently headed to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to cultivate linkages with new and existing partners in the region for the company’s international remittance arm.

Enriching its portfolio of partners, a memorandum of agreement between Cebuana Lhuillier and Al Fardan Exchang–one of the largest exchange houses in UAE–was signed by Lhuillier and Osama Al Rahma, CEO of Al Fardan Exchange and President of Foreign Exchange and Remittance Group (FERG).

Highlighting the importance of the company’s strong network of partners, Lhuillier said, “I’m glad that we continue to expand our reach in the Middle East. These partnerships are tremendously valuable because they allow us at Cebuana Lhuillier to serve more Filipinos abroad and their families in the Philippines.”

For his part, Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, cited the huge presence of OFWs in the Middle East.

“We have a lot of overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, the very reason why we opened a marketing office in Dubai last year. Making our services available to more Filipinos is one of our ways to empower our clients and help them uplift their lives,“ he said.

Also present to meet with partners were CLSC General Manager Noel Cristal and Cebuana Lhuillier Chief Information Officer Ergilio Ong.

Aside from representatives of RAKBANK, Al Fuad, XpressMoney, and several other partners, the Cebuana Lhuillier team also met with MoneyGram global leaders Peter Osher and Grant lines, along with the money transfer company’s regional directors.

By establishing key partnerships in the Middle East, Cebuana Lhuillier wishes to make international money remittance between clients in the region and in the Philippines more convenient. There are as many as two million Filipinos currently based in the Middle East.

Lhuillier recognizes Millennials in the workforce

In this picture(from left to right, front row): Dr. Merlyn Paulmitan, College Secretary of the College of Computer Science of the University of Makati, Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, Dr. Danilo Sabado, Dean of the College of Computer Science of the University of Makati, and college faculty members.

Jean Henri  Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier and the main proponent behind the DepEd-Cebuana Lhuillier Alternative Learning System  addressed some 600 graduates at the University of Makati during the institution’s 43rd Commencement Ceremonies. Recognizing the power of millennials in today’s workforce, Lhuillier discussed the generation’s contribution to society and stated that there is no single path to success. “What guarantees your success is if you are willing to go beyond what is required of you to reach your goals; and most importantly, if you love your job. Although skills and talent go hand in hand with a positive attitude towards work, hard work beats talent when talent isn’t working hard,” he said. Lhuillier, who has been supporting UMAK’s annual  IT Olympics, also stressed the importance of social media and how companies, including his own, are harnessing it to promote engagement.
