Cebuana Lhuillier’s heart tug

THE TENDER emotional heart tug effected by Cebuana Lhuillier in its newly launched series of three TV commercials combines with Coco Martin’s celebrity pull. All together, the TV audience is treated with creative, memorable reality TV executions. The target market is left with a warm feeling for Cebuana Lhuillier, luring its patrons to continued loyalty or, even better, bringing in new clients for its myriad of remittances and other services.

Ad agency Ace Saatchi & Saatchi linked up with production house Filmex, and started casting and production design months before actual shooting. The complicated casting process, mind you, was not choosing celebrity Coco Martin, but rather choosing and casting real Cebuana Lhuillier customers. Nonetheless, Saatchi client service director Edg Samson added the interesting trivia that Martin was himself once upon a time an OFW in Canada.

The customers — who were to withdraw money ostensibly sent to them by relatives — were not informed beforehand that they were going to be in a TV commercial. All they were told was that a promo reward would be given to them if they transacted on a specific day and time.

Before the shooting day, the production crew built fake walls and posts around the Cebuana Lhuillier outlet to hide the cameramen and light men. Thus, any customer would not find anything out of the ordinary when they come in to transact business.

Director Henry Frejas’ shots were all “Take one,” thus capturing in real time the deepest emotions of father and son, of two sisters, of mother and son — each physically apart from one another due to the desire to earn a living to support loved ones. All three commercials feature actual footage of the customer going to the teller, who turns out to be Martin.

That first big surprise is only a buildup to yet a bigger surprise: the entry of the loved one whose presence they had missed for years. “Mar Diama, 25, had not seen his father, Nicanor, in Sultan Kudarat for eight years. Gemmalyn Albarido, 22, had not seen her sister, Suzette, in Leyte for three years. Angelina Abuyen, 62: Her son, Alexis Awing Abuyen, has been working in Dubai since 2011.” They were flown to Manila to be able to give their loved one the full dramatic effect of receiving their hard-earned money person to person.

I like the few seconds of awkward reactions and absolute shyness mirrored on their faces upon unexpectedly beholding a loved one in front of them.

The commercials aptly ends with the tag, “Cebuana Lhuiller, damang-dama ang perang padala. Parang ikaw mismo ang nagbigay. (Heartily feeling the money that was sent. Like you personally gave it).”

Congratulations to client, agency and production house for the courage and the tenacity to think of and actually implement this creative undertaking. As the saying goes, no guts, no glory. Gutsy and glorious, I must say!

CLIS brings Cebuana CTPL to Davao City

Davao City’s tri-media and bloggers with (seated at center: l-r) Federal Phoenix Assurance Company Distribution and Branches Manager Vinelle Haber, Cebuana Lhuillier Davao Regional Manager Eduardo Flores Jr., Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions General Manager Jonathan Batangan, Federal Phoenix Assurance Company Asst. Vice President for Distributions and Branches Gerard Agra

April 11, 2013 – Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions (CLIS) introduced the Cebuana Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL) in a local press conference held at Max Restaurant in SM City-Davao.

CLIS, the insurance arm of P.J. Lhuillier, Incorporated (PJLI), partnered with the country’s number one motor insurer, Federal Phoenix Assurance Company (FPAC) to offer the motoring public the most convenient way to obtain CTPL policies. Policy renewals and insurance settlements can now be easily done in any of Cebuana Lhuillier’s more than 1,500 branches nationwide.

During the media launch, CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan presented the key features of Cebuana CTPL. Among those is its “no fault indemnity” clause which translates to a guaranteed Php15,000.00 accident coverage regardless of who is at fault. Another neat feature is the 24 hour claims turn-around time to process settlements, making it the fastest institutionalized claims processing in the country. He also emphasized how Cebuana CTPL significantly helps the motoring public by offering the right premiums minus the “mark-up” and poses a challenge to fly-by-night insurance companies in issuing fake CTPLs.

The Davao launch is the fourth leg in the nationwide campaign with the first three held in Manila, Baguio and Cebu.

Ambassador Lhuillier pays courtesy call to Portuguese Navy Chief

Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier calls on Admiral José Carlos Torrado Saldanha Lopes (left), Chief of Naval Staff of the Portuguese Navy on April 16, 2013 at the Navy Headquarters in Lisbon. Also in the photo is Rear Admiral José Luis Branco Seabra de Melo, his Chief of Staff.

Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier paid a courtesy call to Admiral José Carlos Torrado Saldanha Lopes, Chief of Naval Staff of the Marinha Portuguesa (Portuguese Navy) on April 16, 2013 at the Navy Headquarters in Lisbon.

During the meeting, Ambassador Lhuillier said that the Philippines and Portugal share the same interest to protect and preserve its extensive maritime jurisdiction. As an archipelagic country with a coast line of more than 36,000 kilometers, the Philippines carries the huge task of managing and maximizing the use of its vast marine resources. Admiral Lopes agreed with the Ambassador and acknowledged that the Navy covers an area of responsibility that is 63 times its land territory presenting a huge challenge for the 11,000-strong Navy.

The Ambassador conveyed the gratitude of the Philippine government for the assistance provided by the Navy and the Air Force during medical evacuations at sea of injured and seriously-ill Filipino seafarers, mostly from chemical tankers and cargo ships transiting the waters off the Portuguese coast. Every year, the Philippine Embassy receives a number of reports about Filipino seafarers evacuated to the islands of the Açores and Madeira for emergency reasons.

Ambassador Lhuillier credits the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centers (MRCC Lisboa and Delgada) for the timely reporting of maritime incidents involving Filipino nationals which enables the Embassy to react quickly and to provide the necessary assistance for the Filipino crew and up-to-date information for their families in the Philippines.

Admiral Lopes responded favorably to the proposal of the Ambassador to establish linkage between the Portuguese Navy and the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard through exchange visits and technical cooperation in the fields of search and rescue operations and marine environmental protection. The Ambassador also invited the Admiral to consider the possibility of sending a cadet to study in the Philippine Military Academy.

After their meeting, a briefing presentation on the organization, mission, and functions of the Portuguese Navy was given by the Navy staff. Also present during the briefing was Rear Admiral José Luis Branco Seabra de Melo, Chief of Staff of Admiral Lopes and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva, Jr. who was a former Navy and Coast Guard Officer.

Admiral Melo highlighted the dual character of the Portuguese Navy as having both military and civilian functions. Under its unique organizational setup, the Navy includes the Fleet, Maritime Police, Hydrographic Institute, Maritime Department, and the Naval Academy with the Chief of Naval Staff serving as head of both the Navy and the National Maritime Authority.

The Ambassador was informed that the Portuguese Navy’s frigate NRP Alvares Cabral will be the flagship of the Operation Atalanta of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) created to combat acts of piracy off the coast of Somalia and escort ships under the UN´s World Food Program and the AMISOM from April to August this year. Ambassador Lhuillier mentioned that the Philippines gives great importance to the issue of piracy off the coast of Somalia due to the frequent cases of Filipino seafarers being held captives by pirates. In support of this, the Philippine Navy has deployed a Liaison Officer to the Combined Task Force based in Manama, Bahrain.

The Ambassador thanked the Navy leadership for the warm welcome accorded to him and expressed hope that the visit made will provide the impetus for greater collaboration between the uniformed services of both countries.

Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier poses with key Navy officers after the briefing presented by the Navy staff. Joining him is Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva, Jr.
